I’ll be honest, I LOVE wish-fulfillment story. I heard a lot of people accused such story as being poorly written, trash, and stuff like that. But I LOVE it!

And let me be clear here; All fictions are wish-fulfillment to some extent. We read because we want to escape or distract ourself from our mundane life.

We want to be strong and triumph over our enemy with ease, that’s why we read story with OP protagonist.

We want to venture into the fantastical world, that’s why we read fantasy.

We want excitement, that’s why we read action.

We want diabetes, that’s why we read romance.

Or some particular folks who want to enjoy pain and the rush of emotions, that‘s why they read tragedy.

We all read to experience what we want to experience, to fulfill our wishes. So that’s why all the fictions are wish-fulfillment to some extent.

Though, I do understand why some people show such contempt toward wish-fulfillment story. They say, there’s no tension, no struggle, no valuable life lessons to learn, no emotional connection, that’s why they hate it.

But ironically, what they like to read is also a wish-fulfillment in their own way.

I think liking or not liking wish-fulfillment story is very subjective. For me personally, I‘m okay with story with ridiculously OP mc who can defeat his enemy with just a snap of his finger, seduce hot girls with ease, and can do whatever the fvck he wants because he’s strong.

Like what people say, such story has no tension, no struggle, and nothing to learn. It’s trash. But If that’s the case, then so be it.

I love reading trash story~ ☺️

Sometime I want to read such story because I just want to have fun and nothing else. I don’t need no tension, no struggle, no life lessons, and all those shits. I just want an entertaining ride that give me exactly what I want.

It can be cheap, it can be trashy, it can be mindless story, but so what? There’s nothing wrong with that as long as it serves its purpose.

So let’s be honest here guys, we all LOVE wish-fulfillment, especially if you’re a man of culture (Yes, I’m looking at you. 😏). So let’s be honest with ourself and tell me this;

What would you consider to be your ultimate wish-fulfillment story?

Everyone has a favorite color. What I always found ridiculous is to try and ridicule a story for it. Don't like it? It's okay, that's normal. Try to trash-talk the author for the story? Why? Of course, at the end of the day, everyone does as they please so that's still understandable.

Also, you could say that you can judge the story's technical stuff. But at the end of the day, not everyone's a professional writer or has an editor behind their stories. (Though one thing is not knowing and another totally different is trying to ignore the fact that you could do better).

Now, to answer the question. My first and main novel is a 100% wish-fulfillment, self-insertion novel, so yeah, I guess it is the answer to your question on its own, and it's even fanfiction! HAha (It's on the signature if you want to give it a look.)

I also like to read a lot of fanfictions, I find it interesting and amusing how an original idea or story can change depending on who's writing it, and if they include something new to the original novel, better yet! (Though... I don't like over-smut, BL/GL, fanfics).

Personally, I'd like my mind wiped of my memories and getting thrown into a world filled with extreme conflicts that I can solve with ease and get praised for it. And any time I feel down there's someone who would help back up. Eventually I'd be either satisfied enough to die of old age or not die forever regardless I am never forgotten and at some point through all that journeying I remember who I was and come to terms with that past without ever devolving back into it.

Obviously I'm omitting the specifics like big titty waifus and having kids that idolize me.

Totally agree with you!

I find it ridiculous that some people would criticize wish-fulfillment story. Though, I do understand why they did it, but it also discouraged a lot of writers.

Let’s be real here. People love wish-fulfillment. Erotica is a pure wish-fulfillment and it’s on a very high demand in the market because it answers people’s fantasy.

And why do you think people working in the porn-industry make tons of money?

Because they give people exactly what they want!

*ahem* Let’s get out of porn for now and let’s talk about fiction.

Do you know pulp fictions? It’s a type of fiction that’s very popular around the 90s. It’s written purely to entertain people and nothing else. It’s a pure wish-fulfillment and as you may have guess, it sells ridiculously well.

With all these evidences, it’s very clear what people want; They want wish-fulfillment.

What I don’t like is some hypocrites who criticize a wish-fulfillment story and discourage the writer.

If some of you have done it before and happen to stumble upon this, please stop what you’re doing. Of course, you have the right to say what you want, but it’s not okay if it’s hurt somebody.

And if you are writers who have written what you wanted and ended up receiving criticism, let me tell you that it’s okay to do what you want. Just write what you enjoy, and if your fantasy click with mine, I’ll surely enjoy it too with no bias whatsoever.

Remember; You do you.

Depend on the person, this is very subjective. Those X reader fanfic for example. Yeah, I won't go there.

For me, wish fullfilment some story that actually has depth a bit and where I could attached to the character, OP or not is okay. Something memorable and whenever I back to reread it, I remember the harem.

I like arifureta, and especially after story. Some people call it trash, but I willl disagree. All the waifu on that novel is having character development on certain extent and good comedy.

That's what make me re read that novel several times already.

But nah.. for no depth story. It's not like I dislike story with no depth. Between dislike and like, I would say I like it too. You know something to read to filling a free time and you don't wanna read heavy stuff.

Its just on those type of story, I won't get attached and won't comeback when I done with it.

I love Arifureta too! It’s one of my favorite story, well, purely because Hajime is a total badass and not a wimpy harem protagonist like in the other story. And all the girls in his harem are awesome!

The reason why I don't enjoy wish fulfillment too much is whenever I read a story I see myself as an observer rather than being in the shoes of the main character.
Unless I'm reading an interactive story, in which case I'd actually enjoy it a bit.
In any case I like it better if the MC suffers a bit, maybe even die a tragic death, would be cool to see as an observer.

Oh I have to actually answer the question:
That would be an interactive story where the protag gets blessed with immortality and a system, but then he realizes the system warps the world around him as levels up and he has an existential crisis. Everyone he comes to know and love die or drift further away from him. The end.

Am I a hardcore sadist or a hardcore masochist? I have no fucking clue.

I see. You and I are totally different. When I read, I always imagine myself as the protagonist. It happens automatically, but if the protagonist does something that I don’t like, or just being stupid, I‘d quit right away.

I agree with @Anon_Y_Mousse in that I never imagined myself as a character, so I really don't get wish-fulfillment.

Ironic because I do consume a lot of it, looking back.

However, I do understand it has an appeal, so I very, very strongly agree with your perspective to just let people do what they want and write what they want.

It really rubs me the wrong way when people get so up in arms with smut/Isekai/GB or the associated tropes because the "more deserving" genres don't get the chance to shine. I get it. It's disappointing when your far better thought out story gets overshadowed by what the market consumes, but I'll just have to be blunt and hope that these people will deal with it. It's something we should all come to terms with and accept.

It's possibly due to my own experiences, but it's really grating when those anitubers lead their crusades against Isekai or what, and you have entire circlejerks of people judging and looking down on people who do as much as like those Isekai or even call them good. Because you know, taste is actually subjective? And them liking Arifureta over... I dunno, FMA doesn't make them any less of a human being or a fan. Or them unironincally enjoying Shield Hero more than say, Steins Gate doesn't make their opinions any less valid.

I ended up rambling lol. But yeah, I think I got my thoughts out that's quite relevant to your comments.

To be a vampire/werewolf in a modern fantasy world!

@BlackKnightX
I agree! I also do that. Sometimes if the emotions are described well enough, I sometimes even have my emotions affected by the novel I’m reading. Like, I start reading with my emotions as neutral, but if I start reading a part with lots of anger, and I have to take a break, I get affected by the novel, and end up unhappy.

I see. You and I are totally different. When I read, I always imagine myself as the protagonist. It happens automatically, but if the protagonist does something that I don’t like, or just being stupid, I‘d quit right away.

Thanks for the rambling? 😂

Well, you’re absolutely right about that. No matter what critique say, at the end of the day, people read fictions because they want to feel something, and these feelings are very subjective, depending on the person.

So honestly, we all read for a wish-fulfillment in our own way since different people have different wishes.

As for coming to term with your story isn’t very popular like it deserves to be. I think it depends on the goal you have.

What do you want to achieve with your story? Fame? Money? Adulation? Or just self-satisfaction? Whichever you want is fine, you just need to be clear about it.

But if you want all of it, then the solution is usually to combine all the elements together. Let’s say, if you like military stuffs but it’s not very popular as mich as the isekai, then you can just combine the two and make something unique and interesting out of it!

Well, whatever you do; Just follow your goal and do your best~ 👊🏻

Basically anything isekai. I NEED something more interesting than this wretched cesspool of boredom, capitalism, and prejudices. At least let me earn money by wandering out and blasting slimes with fireballs or somethin. Sniffle. Though, if I could be a dungeon core with limitless potential, probably a relatively slow start, but eventually preying upon divine beings as a normal dungeon preys upon humans. . . . Oh, and Knight's and Magic is possibly my favorite Isekai. Cause I love Ernesti's earnest love of Mecha.

We have the same school of thought! 😂

I’m actually a very rational and logical person with little to no empathy at all, so a mindless drama in some story really irritates me to no end.

And if the protagonist has different beliefs and way of thinking like I do, I just can’t imagine myself as him anymore, and just move on after that.

The good thing about this is that when I read, I feel so immersed in the story. The bad thing is as I stated, if the character does something that I extremely don’t like, it’ll be really irritating.

Tbf, there are valid criticisms of wish fulfillment.
Frick, I forgot the others but here's one; the author sacrificed a well written story for the sake of their indulgence. It's literally nonsense that over glorifies the reader/author. No matter how you look at it, it's a bad story. Just because some people can enjoy it doesn't mean it isn't still bad.
Ah, the other was that it's only wish fulfillment. I sort of combined the two, I guess. If there's nothing in the story except you beating up the designated bad guy and screwing the designated love interest, then it ironically stops being fun to read.
I agree with @Anon_Y_Mousse in that I never imagined myself as a character, so I really don't get wish-fulfillment.
I have a mix, I guess? I like to imagine myself in the characters shoes, but I also heavily distinguish characters as their own individual people. That's another reason why wish fulfillment is bad, sometimes. If you end up with a Mary Sue type character, all the other characters become meaningless extensions of the MC's ego instead of their own people. That's super frustrating for me to read.

As stated, Wish-Fulfillment isn't inherently bad. And some people can like the stuff that is bad. Uh... I don't have any kind of wise closing point or anything like that. Bye now.
