So, I've been approached by an editor from that website earlier. The thing is, I've read about all the horror stories about them. Now that I was given a chance to join them, allow me to ask 2 questions: 1. How bad is it really? 2. Is it worth it?

It's very dependant on daily uploads. If you're known to procrastinate or have frequent hiatuses, look elsewhere. It's 1-2k words per day or nothing. Also make sure you never sign anything they give you, and make sure you don't regret whatever you post there because it's most likely gonna be permanent (unless you put gay prolapse porn as your cover then maybe, the mods might be inclined to remove your fiction)

I'm just speaking from experience here you should probably wait for people with actual knowledge and aren't talking out of their ass.

From my friend who was contracted in that site, there is nothing wrong with it actually. As long as you can keep your ranking and get a ton of power stone, then 1K-2K$ every month is not a dream.

Well, that's the opinion of people there. There is a lot of toxic reader though.
I also posted my novel in that site, but I didn't sign the contract because I made a Patreon.

It's your choice.

What's the detail of the contract?

You could only post your novel in that site, I think that's the gist of it. I don't really know about the copyright claim from the contract, because each author is offered different contract from what I know.

I myself didn't really know about it, only heard about the revenue that my friend got from that site.

In the contract that was sent to me though, I am the holder of the copyright and I could upload my novel in other site. But I must give the webnovel 10/15 advanced chapters compared to the other site. That's it.

The contract I received was completely predatory with a red flag every few sentences so always check what they send you. I won't go into details but I would lose pretty much everything to them if I considered joining.

Personally, I will be pretty much always against joining them since they pretty much hoard people in waves of tens to hundred and try to snake in a contract without care. I've seen such waves myself. You will need to be extremely lucky to get anywhere high with your story to beat the topliners. And at that point, you are much better going with everything else since if your story actually attracts attention, it would net you 2-3x more through Patreon if it was posted on many other sites instead of just WN. Their readers are primed to only use their platform and their own currency to unlock chapters, which you get paid for only if the bought one was used and not gained free.

The whole thing is wonky as hell so be careful. Everyone makes their own decisions. I personally regret posting my story there even though it has great reception or registering an email there (which was leaked in LESS THAN AN HOUR to scammer databases spamming daily). You can do much better without it.

Wow, no wonder some writers were traumatized.

WN is a really way to build a reader base. The first novel might not have a lot of comments, and depending on the type of novels, you will get immature readers, but they are everywhere, not just on WN. Because of the type of novel I write, most of the readers on WN and SH are quite nice, but SH is more active in terms of comments, but more WN readers will give PS.

The authors I know on WN will license away their novel for $400, which I can understand. 99% of the stories aren't publishable anyway, so what's the point in keeping the copyright? They are throwable stories meant to establish a reader base and to improve their writing. The chance of a novel becoming big is like winning the lottery, so why bother keeping a copyright that maybe a dozen people will ever pay for it?

I chose not to license anything because I don't need the money, and I prefer to keep the copyright for my ego and freedom to do whatever I want. I assume that's the reason why most people keep their copyright. Unless you're at the top level of writing like Cradle and MoL, I don't see the point in keeping the novel solely for making it big.

A lot of writers and readers on WN have an "eastern" mindset; if you work hard to the bone, you will increase your chances to succeed. However, from the "western" perspective, it's toxic and damaging to mental health. It's similar to the "tiger mom" argument. I can't say which is right, but if you can work hard, go for it.

I only have posted my novels on Webnovels just because they have a large reader base. But even if you put links on your chapters, they'll just straight up censor them...

There are so many red flags on their contract that just seem like you're making yourself at disadvantage on purpose if you sign it, as an author. But it should be fine if you don't really care or that you know you can avoid all those liabilities. After all, all you need to do is to write daily (granted if you can keep the pace). Say goodbye at your story though, WN will always keep it. But many authors don't mind this, as you can see from their popularity. My advice is you gotta read the contract first and contemplate on it. Should you still find it alright, then go on, and define how much you want the money or building fanbase on WN.

If slaves were offered worker contracts, it would be the ones Webnovel offers. Please for your safety stay away from that company.

Just say goodbye to good text formatting. The text editing's very limited. Nothing like colorful text, highlighting, tables, etc. Also, the contract is based on Chinese Law, I believe. Be prepared. The page views don't matter either. They are counted every time someone visits your novel page. Including bots, readers who haven't read a single thing, and just spammers in general.

Btw, just make sure the 'editor' is an actual person. Don't wanna have this be a scam after all. If you got a message at Wattpad, it is very skeptical. But idk if you did.

It's great if you're doing fanfiction like I am. They don't hound me for a contract.

Update: They insisted that I sign a contract, so I declined their offer.
