Yoho, everyone! How's your holidays? Good?

Anyway, Ai-chan needs your help, because Ai-chan needs variety. Ai-chan is designing a type of gamebook in memory of Joe Dever, who wrote the Lone Wolf series that Ai-chan loved very much and recently started playing again. However, it is not a medieval-type gamebook, but a sci-fi one similar to Bio of A Space Tyrant by Piers Anthony.

But a sci-fi space opera gamebook is not going to be complete without multiple types of ships. And so Ai-chan needs the help of all you kind authors and readers to design those ships. Basically we have two sides: The Trappist Empire and The Felmori Federation.

As the player, you're a young captain of an old ship of The Trappist Empire. On one of your routine patrols at the end of 24th century, you were ambushed by a detachment of the Felmori 2nd Fleet. You won the battle and managed to limp your way to the closest starbase, but found that you were cut off from the capital and all communications scrambled. As your ship was the most combat-ready of all the ships in your region, you were tasked with breaking the blockade so that you can deliver the intel to Stellar Command. With each battle that you win, you get Requisition Point, which you can use to 'purchase' new ships.

This is the ship you will be commanding. Please consider it as the template. You do not need to decide how many guns it has, Ai-chan just wants to know your philosophy for designing such a ship.
Name: Aerostar
Class: Aerostream-class Frigate
Role: Long-range Patrol Vessel
Description: Commissioned at the end of the 23rd century as the last and most advanced variant of the highly capable Aerostream class, it is now showing its age. Reduced to the role of patrol vessel in the fridge Hasta sector, its combat capabilities were stripped in order to keep it up to date with current technologies. It is one of the only two Aerostream-class still in service and another upgrade is unlikely to happen.
Faction: Trappist Empire

The design philosophy of Trappist Empire is Offensive Power, so it is good at dealing damage and hitting targets, in the system, it is identified as having high Battle Power. Its ships have minimal Shield Points and low Hull Points compared to the Felmori ships.

The design philosophy of Felmori Federation is Durability, so their ships generally have lower Battle Power but very hard to take down even when hit.

There are also other factions that can be encountered such as pirates and bandits, but their philosophy is up to you. Just remember that pirates are unlikely to have more power per ship compared to proper factions.

There are only 5 types of ships:
1. Corvette - Very small, very fragile. Pretty much expendable but they're very cheap, doesn't require specialized shipyards and is available in every port. They're also small enough that with Wolf Pack strategy you can bring 10 of them to gang up on a battleship.
2. Frigate - Designed as escort vessel for the larger ships. Good battle capabilities, but still quite fragile that just a couple shots from a battlecruiser can cripple or destroy them. Also gains advantage from the Wolf Pack strategy.
3. Light cruiser - A more durable form of the Frigate. It is capable of dealing damage and tanking damage but does not excel in either purpose.
4. Battlecruiser - Good battle capability and good durability. A 'tanky' ship that can take damage but is still quite fragile for its requisition cost. Benefits from Battleship Supremacy strategy
5. Battleship - The ultimate expression of a warship. It has good weapons and very durable. The only downside is that it is very big and may have to fight alone in very cramped battlefields. Benefits from Battleship Supremacy strategy.

This is a long-term personal project, so you won't see it up by next month or something like that. If you have any questions, feel free to ask at any time. Thanks in advance.

Are the empires both humanoid? Any other culture detail may be helpful. A lot of times to the type of culture informs the ship design to some extent. Knowing the focus on offense vs. defense is a start but some of the aesthetics can be influenced by different details. If there is nothing more at this time, that is fine. Just trying to mine for anything my brain can use for inspiration.

I am mostly going to be talking about the philosophy of the design here than the actual design of the ships.

In most sci-fi settings such as star wars or Warhammer 40k (The two I am most familiar with) the ships have a very defined up and down when there is no up or down in space unless you are close to a planet. I find that this is either not necessary can often can be disadvantageous (Such as star destroyers) and can often limit the designs of the ships.

By patrol vessel I am going to assume you mean a ship designed to search an area for enemy ships and report back the enemies location rather than something like an escort which is designed to protect a larger ship.

For the Aerostar I would suggest looking at WW2 long range patrol/reconnaissance aircraft such as the Short Sunderland and the PBY Catalina. The Sunderland was designed for fourteen hour sorties. As it is a long range patrol ship it will likely need to have exchange crew so the crew can swap after a few hours this will mean that they will need an area to rest even if it is small and likely a kitchen of some sort. WW2 aircraft such as the Sunderland and the Catalina had defensive armament surrounding them as a patrol craft it does not need much offensive firepower even if it is the design philosophy. Turrets surrounding it with weaponry good enough to defend itself would usually be all it needs.

For weaponry it depends if you want to focus on cannons of some type or on something like a missile/torpedo. If you want to focus on cannons depending on the type I would look at something like the 5 inch guns used by the US navy (Some of the best small calibre ship guns of WW2) if you want to go for torpedoes their is the Type 93 torpedo also known as the long lance torpedo used by the Japanese Imperial Navy. I don't know much about missiles so I can't really help you there but in space torpedoes and missiles are basically the same. For cannons they will want to be placed around the ship to give you the best field of fire possible. Torpedoes will likely be placed on the sides and if possible you will want them to be reloadable at least once (like how the WW2 Japanese torpedoes could). If it was originally an escort it would have worked with other similar ships so it might not have had the most powerful weapons but when there are multiple of them the firepower adds up and can be effective.

For the Aerostar I would go with a design that allows the placement of small calibre weaponry on all sides for self defence and then a few larger calibre weapons for offensive actions. As a patrol vessel it will likely not be getting into one on one fights often. Patrol vessels need to be designed so that the crew can work for long hours in relative comfort otherwise they will not be able to do their job properly in my opinion for a patrol vessel this out ways firepower. As long as the ship can protect itself that should be good enough. It will also need a fuel source that can keep the engines running for a long period of time.

If battleships are going to be fighting alone then they will likely need a lot of firepower in addition to the main weapons lots of smaller faster rate of fire guns is useful. You could look at pre dreadnaught battleships such as battleship MIkasa in Yokosuka Japan which as far as I know is the last pre dreadnaught battleship. Pre dreadnaught battleships had the main battery, a second battery and often a third and sometimes fourth each getting smaller in calibre.

I would also suggest having aircraft carriers as they were what changed war at sea and made the battleship obsolete and had a very important role historically.

Hopefully something here was helpful and if you need anymore help I will do what I can.

This a very important point that I did not think of. Culture, physical characteristics and geographical location are very important when designing something such as a ship. For example the US and Japanese ships of WW2 were designed for long range as they had to cover long distances without refuelling while the British Ships were not as they could refuel throughout the empire. When Vickers designed and built battleship MIkasa for the Japanese navy they designed it for the average height of a British sailor not a Japanese sailor and at the time a British sailor was mostly taller than a Japanese sailor. In general British ships and tanks were more survivable than those of other countries (Look at what happened with HMS Illustrious and HMS Warspite) which could have been a cultural aspect as well as a navy doctrine.

This is something that will likely need to be thought about.

Yes, they're both humanoids, and still consider each other as humans, but having left Earth over two centuries earlier, they have neither allegiance to their shared heritage nor common points to discuss with.

The Empire is administrated by the Empress at Trappist Prime and runs the nation in a nationalistic-fascist style. They have a more straightforward attitude towards settling disputes: If diplomacy fails, violence is acceptable. That being said, it's not like they have an aggressive attitude towards others. It's that they believe that the best defense involves immobilizing the other side quickly. Technology-wise, The Empire is slightly more advanced, particularly in their engine, reactor and weapons technology.

The Federation is administrated by the Federal Council, headed by a President at their capital of Felmarn. They used to be a loosely connected alliance who banded together to keep the Empire's expansion in check. However, it's been over 60 years since their last major conflict and administrative power of the Federation is now centered around Felmarn planet and the leadership is getting increasingly haughty and corrupt. The general public believes that every life is sacred and therefore, every measure was taken to at the very least, provide suitable protection for the crew.

The attack on the Empire is completely unprovoked and sudden, and the Empire, having sent its main two armadas away to deal with an external threat is left completely defenseless in this conflict. Ai-chan will keep the reason for the invasion a secret for now.

The Empire is the same Empire in one of Ai-chan's older stories titled Cross Race Destiny. The protagonist of that story is not here during this conflict, having to deal with another nation elsewhere.

By long-range patrol vessel, Ai-chan means 'a type of ship that can operate for long periods of time away from a drydock solo and features a good sensor system and capable of holding its own against pirates and smugglers'. So while it won't have powerful guns, it has a single gun along the length of the ship, similar to Halo's UNSC warships with a single powerful MAC gun. Except that they don't use MAC gun, they use particle cannon as it is more versatile and can be replenished even far from base. It's more like a modern LCS than a scout ship. It can scout, but it can also deal some damage, as long as the target is civilian or pirate ships. It used to have better gun in its previous role as escort ship, but it was cannibalized when newer ships were built.

Yes, the Aerostar was not designed to go into one-on-one fights. Even at the height of its usage, it was a glass cannon. It used to have 2 high power plasma cannons that attack larger ships in swarms with other small ships. It was very fast and its advanced ECM made weapons take a long time to get a target lock. It would come in from all angles, shoot both cannons and run as fast and as erratically as they could before turning around and shooting their twin cannons again when it's loaded. Unlike fighter crafts, they're big enough to carry a proper shield system.

As for aircraft carriers, it is rendered obsolete in this setting. Since pretty much all weapons have extremely long range range of up to 100,000 kilometers if accuracy is not an issue, having a dedicated aircraft carrier is pointless. The fighters would be shot down long before they can release their payloads and even reaching the target is an issue as they'd have run out of fuel before they can get close.

Anyway, thanks for your opinion. Feel free to add anything more.

You might have already thought of this but in space you only need to breach the armour of the ship to destroy it even if its not big it might be enough for the vacuum to either kill the crew or rip the ship apart. Many sci fi settings show that a ship needs to be completely destroyed by weaponry.
What is the limit of the technology? Does it stop at plasma and particle cannons or is it more advanced? Have they found a way to create backholes for example?

The vacuum thing is actually false. The pressure difference is significant, but it's not strong enough to rip the ship apart or suck people out through the hole. So in other words, that Aliens scene was not based on reality. https://www.technology.org/2018/09/...ut-risking-getting-sucked-out-into-the-space/

As for when a mass driver round penetrates the ship's body, it wouldn't make much of a difference. The crew would be in a spacesuit during battle, so they'd not be bothered by lack of air. As for the vacuum ripping the ship apart, it probably would happen if the hull is made of hydrocarbon plastic, but there is zero chance that steel, aluminium or titanium would be ripped apart by vacuum. The force of vacuum would be more or less around the force goat falling on top of you from the second floor. It's not enough force to bend metal. Though there is truth in that a ship doesn't need to be completely destroyed to be disabled.

As for the technology present, plasma is the goto weapon for kinetic weapons. Particle weapons are the goto weapons if you're looking for versatility, being able to affect different results based on the materials of the particle weapon and the modulations. Torpedos are also used, though the Empire uses single-use drones with much better tracking ability. The Empire does have the technology to create blackholes, but this is kept secret and is only achieved through the use of nanotechnology monopolized by the Empress Ayana Foxtail and her kin.

The order of technology in the Empire goes: Empress Ayana Foxtail -> Empress's kin -> Intelligence agents -> Military -> Militia -> Civilian. So by the time the civilians get something good, the Empress already have something much better.

That being said, the type of weapons is just flavour text, as Ai-chan doesn't want to dwell too deeply on the types of weapons since this is just going to be a simple gamebook. If the mechanics are too complicated, people won't like it nor play the gamebook.

So you have space suits as a requirement during battle. What about emergency bulkheads or similar? As a hull breach would still be an inconvenience that you would want to seal, and the force would be enough to blow small objects out into space.

Another important question is what kind of internal defenses does a ship have to deal with a penetrating hit? Do these ships have any kind of protection against an explosion inside the hull?

There are emergency bulkheads, but it's just flavour text. It's part of the literary composition but not part of the game system. As for the protection against an explosion inside the hull, that's contained by the hull itself. For the purpose of the gamebook, there is no distinction between what kinds of rounds is used.

However, if there is a specialized technology used, the battle information text would inform you of it, such as adding one damage for every hit (to simulate an explosive shell ripping apart the hull from explosion) or killing additional crew for every hit (with toxic, parasitic or acidic weapons). There is one alien race that parasitize both metallic and organic in this universe, but that's in another story, not in this one. Ai-chan hasn't decided if that alien race would appear in this story or not as Trappist Empire encountered the alien over a hundred years ago in deep space far from the events of this story.

The game system is basically:
1. You have one ship with 7 Battle Point, 2 Shield Points, 4 Hull Points.
2. The enemy has one ship with 4 Battle Point, 3 Shield Points, 6 Hull Points.
3. You throw 2D6 for yourself and for your opponent. Add the numbers to the respective Battle Points. You won the throw, now throw another 1D6, getting #6. So you deal 6 damage to one ship. Now the opponent has 3 Hull Points after substracting first from the Shield and then the Hull. The next round starts until either side has run out of ships or has run out of Fleet Readiness.

Given the cultural details provided. The Empire is likely to be fairly uniform in its design. Most fascist regimes with high nationalism lack imagination and embrace conformity.

The Federation is likely to be the opposite, with much more freedom in their designs based on specific groups within the federation. Their fleets and ship types are more likely to be haphazard, but freedom and ingenuity allow for some unique units with different specializations.

Keeping this in mind, the strange idea that popped into my head would likely be of federation origin.

Name: Mete -01
Class: R1 Reconnaissance class
Role: Short-Range Reconnaissance/Ambush type Corvette
Description: Originally single occupant research vessels deployed from science stations for data and sample collection; the Mete-01 was redesigned and retrofitted for combat to be deployed by battlecruisers shortly after initial aggressions with the Empire. These Dodecahedron shaped structures largely resemble asteroids and space debris. Thanks to their low emissions, they are difficult to detect by hostile ships. They are often deployed within asteroid belts or other large collections of space debris. Serving both the purpose of identifying and relaying enemy positions to friendly units in the area, and as a surprise response to the Empire's incursion into federation space. Their defense and maneuverability are high due to being initially designed to survive unknown energies and other scientific research and respond to sudden gravitational forces, but their overall attack power is on the lower end. A large group of them can still provide a great deal of harassment however as they are difficult to pin down.

small energy thrusters positioned around the vessel allows them to move any direction suddenly and with ease. They are capable of producing a low-gravitational force with which, they deploy shield reflectors whose rotation can be manipulated and controlled around them to defend against enemy fire. Inside the Mete-01 the pilot can see in any direction as the walls and floor almost in 360 degrees appear transparent to the pilot, with the situation outside being transmitted around the pilot from various sensors placed surrounding the outside of the vessel. The lasers that have been retrofitted to the ship also surround the outer surface but unfortunately, this stretches the ships energy to capacity. The pilot must be careful to allow each firing station a cooldown time, as it is easy for individual lasers to overextend the energy of the ship. Firing too much too fast can easily make the pilot a sitting duck. These Corvette's possess no landing gear and are meant to be reattached to their battle cruisers via gravitational tracking beams. In the event of falling to a planet, they crash much like meteors, but if the pilot is skilled, they can rely on their maneuverability and management of the vessel and its defenses to survive.

All in all, it is recommended the pilot have a strong 360-degree awareness and resistance against motion sickness.

Faction: Federation

This was just a random brainchild. Feel free to take the initial idea and run with it. Change whatever you like to fit your story or make it more to your liking if you want to take it at all. Hopefully, if anything, it helps charge some of your creativity.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, that sounds like what Felmori Federation would make. The Empire doesn't really care for stealth, their military ships are mostly designed to project their might. They do have cloaking ships, but those are used by the intelligence units. The Empire is pretty rigid in its philosophy: Militia gets second-hand scraps, Military gets guns, Intelligence gets cloak, Imperial Guard gets the best.
