Quest: Fragments of a Torn Map
Evaluation:
  • The Red Serpents were set up and ambushed by the Silver Sharks, not only failing to retrieve the map fragment's location but divulging their own in the process.
**********
Although the Red Serpents were infamous pirates of the Black Sea, particularly in the region of Spire Reef, they still had plenty of rivals, enemies and allies of similar might. One such rival pirate crew were the Silver Sharks, whom Ari's captain, Rae, had recently set her sights on.

"You lot remember good ol' Carlos don't cha? That lil' stout guy wid a fancy-ass eyepatch. I recently 'eard that he's been braggin' about a particular map piece he stole from a shipwreck down South."

She emphasised with a smirk, glancing towards the older generation of pirates in her crew who had known of her old man's past.

"Buncha clowns, da lot of 'em. Goin around actin' as if dey own da place, 'bout time we showed 'em who's boss around 'ere."

An evil smile dawned on her scarred face as she spoke, her crewmates eagerly beginning to sharpen their weapons in anticipation of the brutal battle to come.
---
The battle was indeed brutal, but unfortunately, not in their favour. The proud Red Serpents were heavily injured from the trap laid out for them, assaulted from all sides as soon as they boarded the ship of the Silver Sharks. To their dismay, the rumour about the map fragment was a devious lie, a sly attempt at enticing one of the other crews containing a real map piece to confront them.

In order to rescue Raeliana, who had been quickly subdued and captured after recklessly jumping onto the ship first, the crew, unfortunately, had to cough up the information found in their own map fragment before barely escaping with their injured brethren. Many lives were lost today, leaving the atmosphere painfully tense on their own proud crew ship.

Ari, who had decent knowledge on how to treat wounds and injuries on the spot, both helped battle the sudden assault and save/prolong the lives of her crewmates. Obviously, she couldn't save them all, but the fact that so many even remained alive till the end was aided by her efforts, further solidifying her position amongst the Red Serpents. After this incident, there should be few/little people on the crew still questioning her loyalty/motives, bringing her one step closer to the secrets of Spire Reef.

Although upset by the loss of the people who treated her as their sister, Ari constantly re-assured and told herself that they were pirates, and that she was a spy. Nothing more. After comforting Luca and Kian, and leaving their aggrieved and guilt-filled captain to drown her sorrows in good alcohol, Ari silently burnt her report for the day, sending it to the secret agents in the adventurer's guild. For a moment, she stared into the night sky, discreetly wiping away the tears welling in the corners of her eyes.

  • Successfully(?) recruited the Dark Siren into the Red Serpents
**********
The Dark Siren is an infamous witch, known for being the cause of dozens of ruined shipwrecks and just as many broken hearts. The extent of her powers are unknown, but she frequently utilizes powers and skills revolved around seduction and illusions to bend people to her will. It is said that she resides on a tiny island somewhere within the Black Sea, deep within a ruined village long forgotten by civilisation.
---
A gorgeous dark-skinned woman waltzed out of the ruined building, blending in perfectly with the night sky. Her eyes were as black as night, and although an easy smile was plastered onto her face, her gaze was dangerously cold. Dark chocolate waves tumbled down her back mesmerizingly as she stood before the pirate crew. A long black dress made of silk trailed on the messy floor, hanging loosely on her body, painting the picture of a devilish queen of the night.

"My my, to think that such fresh food would deliver themselves straight to my doorstep." She teased melodically, her voice truly befitting of the title 'Siren' with its mesmerizing tone.

"Well, what do the Red Serpents want with a simple witch like me?" She smiled, slowly bringing the pirate crew out of their trance with her question.

Noticing her fellow pirates struggling against the spell of the witch, Ari discreetly pinched Rae's arm to bring her attention back to the matter at hand. Perhaps she shouldn't have done so, as she noticed the Dark Siren staring at her coldly, before abruptly flashing her an innocent smile.

"M-miss Dark Siren, we would like ta n-negotiate a contract with ya, to join 'our crew." Raeliana requested as politely as she could muster, as even she could feel the great charisma oozing off the woman in front of them.

"Hmm..." She tilted her head seductively as she seemingly pondered over the question, but Ari briefly noticed her signalling to something, or someone, with her eyes.

"Sure! But only if you lend me that little pirate beside you for a moment." She smiled, pointing at Ari suddenly.

Taken off-guard, Ari blinked in surprise before her fellow crewmates obediently followed the Siren's orders like drunk zombies. "Yeah, yeah sure..." They mumbled as they wandered back towards the outskirts of the secluded island.

"Come closer." She beckoned flirtatiously, causing Ari to be on even higher alert than before as she slowly and cautiously stepped forward. To think that a single step would be too much, as a faint magic circle abruptly materialized beneath her. Immediately stepping backwards, she realized she had fallen for a trap, as another, more dangerous magic circle materialized with that single motion, pricking her foot gently with a thorn. After hopping backwards and creating a significant distance between herself and the tricky Siren, she was suddenly taken aback by the image in front of her.

A blood-red image of her true self, seemingly created from the single drop of blood she spilt, materialized in front of the Siren as she analyzed her true appearance.

"Quite a pretty one aren't you?"

She spoke after a long pause, seemingly thinking about something deeply, most likely not truly meaning the words she spoke.

"Did you know there's a fellow within the Black Sea, eager to collect beautiful eyes like your own?" She smiled vaguely as she turned towards the highly alert and tense Ari.

"Just a kind warning for my new crewmate." She winked, before snapping her fingers, causing the clear apparition of Felicia to disappear.

"Now let us go join the rest of our lovely crew shall we?" She chuckled, before walking off towards the Red Serpent pirate ship.

All this time, Ari had not said a word, her shock and wariness worried about saying something she shouldn't, or falling for a trap made of words. However, even without saying a thing, she felt as if her secrets had all been plainly laid out for that woman to see...

"What are you reading, Domenas?" A man asked Domenas when a strange book Domenas was reading. With the simple mind of an uneducated person, he would never be able to understand the content of the book, so Domenas just smiled fakely and told him only the name of the book: Dimensions and Their Significance To Interstellar Travel.

The man, called Pauler, was more like a teenager. He seemed to be extremely interested in Domenas' attire and demeanour. At first, Domenas was not going to talk to him, but after looking at the quest in Adventurer Guild, he found that he should make a friend, and so a friend he would make.

"... How about this, Pauler? I'll hire you as my pocket assistant, and you'll help me run errant and collect news around the town for me. No fighting involved, and the salary would not be too poor." Domenas observed Pauler's appearance, and immediately concluded that he was utterly ordinary, and thus, could easily blend in with the surrounding, and was perfect for information gathering, if he was taught a little about some tricks.

More importantly, he was naive, and thus easily fooled. However, he seemed a little bright, and could be considered a seedling, if his determination was good. After all, Domenas valued all talents, and with his hands, he had nurtured many great figures who respected and feared him.

"Domenas..! Really?" Pauler asked in surprise. After all, all his life, he had been living in poverty, and with his mediocre talent, he could not do anything delicate or required good physique, and he had no money and credits to start a business or learn the tricks of the merchants. In his mind, he only had two ways to live, risking his life as an adventurer, or become a servant of a noble.

"Call me boss, and keep it professional, Pauler.

"It is never a good idea to further our relationship, when dealing with each other in business. Take it as my wisdom; the least informal the relationship becomes, the longer that connection holds. Friendliness causes ambiguity, and it will come back to hurt us. Formal, profession relationship, on the other hand, is rigid, and would never weight heavy on our heart." Closing his book, Domenas walked towards the guild, and like a good servant, Pauler quickly followed behind.

*sees the message with the current report*

... So she lost this many friends, and it didn't even help her get closer to her goal?

At least she got the information that they didn't have the map piece, I suppose...

I pray The Goddess improves her luck from now on.

"Someone that signed a business contract with you is not a friend, I'm afraid. So I cannot pass this quest.

Quest Failed.

Day 1

"Your proficiency on each role was pretty average, honestly. Your quest experience indicated that you may fit as a scout. But other than your mobility, I cannot say that your tracking ability is good enough for the role. Not to mention, you don't show any investigation ability. As a sharpshooter too, while you have ranged attack, your accuracy dropped considerably after 60 meters. But, it is the most suitable for you, in my opinion. For field medic, honestly... I shouldn't recommend you this role, as you don't have any experience. But, here we will train you to fulfill these roles." The examiner explained.

Knowing that she took the sharpshooter role. In the future, she probably took this training once again to take the scout specialization. After she confirmed her role to the examiner, she was led to the room she would spend in for the week.

Her teammate were the same, each one having taken the sharpshooter role for that session of training. Two of them wields a bow, while one of them wielded a lance and shield. Apparently the red haired girl could manifest some kind of beam of light to attack the opponent at long range with her lance.

"So..." Annika, one of the archer girl, began. "How about we do a little competition?"

"Not interested." Imca replied.

"Guh... why did you shot my idea down? I haven't even explained it..." Annika paused. Turning to face the remaining two, she asked, "How about you two? We go to archery range and see who can hit the target the most."

"I'm sorry. My ranged attack is rather destructive... I rather not use it without supervision." Riela, the red haired girl, replied.

Seeing that, Annika deflated.

---

One hour passed, while they talked. Exactly at eight, someone came to their room and told them to gather in the courtyard in 5 minutes. As she had nothing to bring, she waited for the others to get ready, and then went there. At the courtyard, she saw people, most likely the other teams, already gathered. Though, there was no semblance of order there.

One by one, each role was called, for the people with that role to gather around the examiner. She saw the other role being led outside somewhere, while most bowman there remained. There was three teams at that moment, amounting to 12 people excluding the examiner remaining on the courtyard.

"Alright. You guys already accepted the sharpshooter role. So I'll do my best to impart my knowledge to you.

As a guard in Scribel City, you are expected to do your combat in three terrain." The man stopped, then lifted his fist. His pointer finger rose, and he continued, "First. at the city proper and the surrounding village. You are expected to make the shot even in the middle of the crowd. If you are unsure you can do this in one week, you can drop out of the training now and look for another role."

The man waited, maintaining his gaze at them all. He looked from the left to the right. Then, seeing that there was no one who took his suggestion, the man continued as he lifted his middle finger. "Okay. The second is on the meadow. You are expected to be able to make the shot while riding a horse."

Then, after one pause, the man continued with the last part. "Third, in the forest. For hunters, this is a familiar territory. The first two days will be spent on honing your urban combat capability. The third and fourth day we'll move onto the grasslands, and the remaining two will be spent on the north scribel forest. At the end of each day, you will be graded. If in the first two day you cannot manage to get the passing grade, you will be given a chance to do the exam on the seventh day. Any question?"

Seeing that everyone were silent, the man then called them all to follow him.

---

It was hard. On the range, The guard called the description of the target. Then, each of them must shoot the target described using bow and arrow provided by the guard. After seeing the failure on even using the bow, the guard then sidelined her and the red-haired girl.

"Okay, the examiner must be seeing something when they included you in this class. Please show me how you will attack the target. Riela, the woman with blue eyes and shoulder length, yellow hair. Target its limb. Watery, the man with black eyes and black hair. Target its limb too."

She transformed her right hand. She made the barrel long, with a small diameter. Solidifying it into ice, the next step she did was to make the bullet. Then, she moved the energy from her body to the small water section inside the chamber between the bullet and her end of barrel. As the water in there turned into water vapor, she released the folding on the subspace at that part, letting the air to expand at a rapid pace.

The bullet went out. She missed her target and hit the target behind it.

Meanwhile, at riela's side, the girl emitted some kind of humming noise as she was enveloped by a white light. The white light then moved to the lance she carried, and after it glowed, she shot a beam of light from the lance. The lance that was glowing returned to its ivory color, no longer glowing after she was done. The problem with her was that while the accuracy was good, the number of target broken behind the targeted part was hit too.

As both of them stopped, the man then had both of them paired into one pair, breaking her pair with Imca and Annika's pair with Riela. As her projectile were still affected by gravity and wind, she was still offered the lesson on ballistics, on how to aim in the afternoon class. As for Riela, she was just told to practice whatever she has, to not give the ability of her too much piercing power.

---

Day 1 passed. After she adjusted her accuracy, she could reliably hit the target at 60m distance. It was still far from the necessary 200m range minimum they had to possess. But for the city proper, she would be able to do so.

Her biological function were nonexistent. Thus, while the others spend their night sleeping, she continued to fire her bullet in the range. Trying out how to comfortably attack at 80m distance was the only thing on her mind right then.

When the morning came, she returned.

---

Day 2

Day 2 consisted of observation training. All the trainee there were tasked to look at objects for a minute, turn back and then after some time passed, recite the object in their memory. From then on, the guard wouldn't give them target they need to shoot like yesterday. He instead gave them a list containing the characteristics of the target, and were told to memorize it. Only at the afternoon they came out to the range, each to shot their target given on the list.

'Human. Blonde hair, 155cm. Hair worn in twintail. Eye color, blue. Skin, pale.'

Finding the object, she made her first shot.

'Lizardman, black scale. 180cm'

Reciting each target from her memory, she shot those target. After ten of her target shot, she returned to her team.

---

Day 3-4

"Can you ride a horse?"

she shook her head. Her body were made of water. While she could shift her shape, the physical limitation of her body made it hard to grip on something. She could make her body turn into ice, with joints like those of dolls to allow her to mimic human movement. Thinking about that, it was probably a good idea to do that. Thus, she shifted her body from water to ice.

Riding horse was another thing she would have to improve, she guessed. Once again, she was sidelined. The trainer brought her to horse stable and asked her to train it. As for that day's training, she would just be given the theory.

In the end, she didn't manage to get into horseback archery at all during the two days. Thus, she had to bet on completing the test on the last day.

Day 5

"Alright, for the last two days, we are moving into the forest for training. You'll be given the basics on how to track objects and how to not give away yourself."

Discouraged by her failure, she felt like she wanted to drop out at that moment. Her range only raised to 100m, far from the 200m necessary to shot at the plains. She was not able to gallop. The guard recommended her to use the Asteria village mission, instead before returning to this training. In one month to two months, she was asked to do that mission during her performance review.

That day's material was tracking. It really accentuate on how lucky she was in completing the previous missions. The knowledge on how to track human and animals were given by the lecturer. With each knowledge, she felt like she could shorten the completion time of hunting mission considerably. For tracking, she felt that she was able to learn it easier compared to other materials that week.

The tracking, coupled with the observation training they had to do everyday, made her notice a lot of things. How her teammate made their own track when traversing the forest, how to see the disturbed objects due to the movement no matter how careful they were, how wind and smell could give away someone's presence. She applied that knowledge to see her teammate's habit.

"Well... the theory of tracking is good and all." The trainer explained. "But, if you apply it just as is, you won't catch your target. To do that, we have to understand our target, and place ourselves inside of their mind. Knowing what your opponent will do when they are in pursuit is essential. In the afternoon exercise, we will move you all to three different place. All you have to do is to get the flag from the other teams. Now, use this time to observe them, and in one hour, you'll move to your designated place."

---

She took it back. Tracking was hard. Her team managed to find one of the team easily and took their flag. But, the second team managed to use that knowledge to make a lot of track instead, and ambushed them. Seeing that that team had made a lot of trail, her team pursued them in haste. The further the other team were, the further they had to pursue. This made them stop when they lost the other team's trail.

At that moment, the ambush sprung. The other team managed to gain an initiative in attacking their team. Their flag bearer's shoulder were tapped, and the exercise ended. Thus, the other team were ranked first, their team were ranked second, and the last team in last position.

"Good work. That's the exact example I want to show you. Team A, you made a sense of urgency to team C and exploited it. For tomorrow, our exercise consist of hiding and stalking your objective. Similar to this day, you are not expected to raise your bow against the other trainee for the session.

---

Day 6

At least she was able to complete one of... six training? Who was she kidding. She definitely would fail. By making herself as small as possible, she completed that day's exercise. Meanwhile, her teammate fell as they were tagged out. The other complained too when she tag them all, earning her victory for her team.

"Well... in this case, I am also in bind. Simply said, being wary for each dew, puddle, spring, or river is not feasible. Torching the forest is a solution, I guess. But, that is absolutely forbidden for a guard."

"Right... Teacher. So can you disqualify her?"

"I don't see why I should. If you encounter this case on the field, you should retreat and let the higher up solve this for you. They will get a more specialized tracker, like a magician who may be able to track her. Anyway, your evaluation is not only decided by her. The fact that you managed to disable the other three also factors into your evaluation, so don't worry about it. Next, let's pack up and return to the city."

---

Day 7.

For range, she had ony 110m/200m necesary. While she passed the exam on the city, at the grassland she was unable to pursue the target, making the target able to get away from her. Not to mention she wasn't able to tame the horse at all. Instead, she had decided to fly instead when following the target. The target were getting away when it entered the forest, which disqualify her. The exam at the forest was completed this time as she managed to tag the examiner, making it a success.

The team exam portion was her saving grace. They succeeded in making the target disabled on live exercise in the city. Instead of attacking using bow and arrow, Imca made a paralytic poison and get close to the target before the target able to break their pursuit. How that would be evaluated, she didn't know. But from that part, she knew she should specialize in scouting instead sharpshooting.

The exam done in the grassland were done in the same way as previous. Only, they had to capture multiple targets. Riela immediately asked her to lift her, which she complied. Using that beam attack of her, she targeted the area in front of the target's horses, spooking them. After the delay, the other two in their team managed to catch up and launch the blunted arrow against the first two target. The remaining two were also tagged in this manner. Finishing their exam, they moved onto the forest.

The forest exam were the same as previous. Only that the opponent's team were the examiners instead of other trainee. The examiners showed her how they took her out even with her stealth strategy as they tagged her out when she tag the second one. For the first one, she managed to get away and hide once again. Yet, at the second one, the third and fourth examiner were there, tagging her out.

Then, after that was done, they returned. The examiners said that the verdict would be given later through the adventurer guild. Thanking them for the lesson, she left.

She knew she should train her distance as the guardsman recommended. But at this point, she felt no challenge against the slimes in the river.

The quest record on the library mentioned that there was a high chance that she could find a lot of slime on the slimecreek. Thus, she flew there instead of staying at the city. As she arrived, she saw that the report was true, because she found a group of thirty to forty of them. Since she planned it to be an exercise, she flew above.

The only thing that limited her at the 120m altitude was only material. The clear body of the slimes were obscuring them at this distance. To combat that, she made an ice tube attached to one of her eyes, and use two lens made of water to magnify her sight. She then adjusted their shape until she got a clear view of the slime below.

She began to shoot. At first, she was missing a lot. As she learned how to adjust the minute movement of the barrel to align to the target, her attack got more accurate. One by one, the ice bullet hit the slime, bursting their membrane. Some of them needed more than one shot to kill as they managed to recover fast enough, but on the end of the day, she bagged the slime cores inside of her body.

"My dear Pauler, what do you think about the system of Adventurer Guild? Isn't it wonderful?" Looking around, Domenas found himself in the almost empty Tavern. The bell indicating attacks rang and most civilians had already gone out to evacuate.

"Boss... don't we also need to evacuate?" Pauler asked again after a while. He felt that this boss of his was not quite right in the mind. He seemed to take everything too lightly. Even in front of the threat of death, he could still calmly drinking his drink and looking through the room board for a free room to spend the night in.

"It seems that there were many rooms available. Very well— Tri-Seven, arranged a schedule for my routine, with greatest flexibility." Domenas muttered to his Tri-Seven before turning back to look at Pauler, who was dying to go out to evacuate with others.

"I've heard that Adventurer Guild gave adventurers the jurisdiction to evaluate other's reports; A wise decision to lower the labour cost. Coupled with the divided ranks for adventurers, this gives raise to seniority between adventurers; A way to give imaginary authority to higher-up of the system while lowering the privilege of the newcomers.

"Such is the benefits of the system. It would entice workers to work hard, and give up their benefits for the sake of 'authority'. Of course there are benefits for the weak too, but it was merely a price for the strong to pay for the unwavering loyalty of the low-ranked workers.

"Now, Pauler, can you see it? This is the time we can game the system, the time of chaos! When war stuck, the privilege of the weak would rise, and the upper-echelon would have to give up more— for the sake of their legacy, to maintain the system." Playing with a gold coin in his hand, Domenas smiled and thought about the time before he became the Secretary of State.

"... Then, what should I do, boss?" Pauler seemed to not understand his speeches, but he felt that he was a good speech nonetheless.

"First, go and record the price from the market. I wanted to see the flow of goodies before deciding in what we'll do." After sending Pauler off, Domenas sighed, and with that sighed, the arrogance he displayed melted into nothingness, along with the yearning for his past. In here, he was nothing, and nothing he shall become.

"Even if I start with nothing, in the chessboard, I'll be the pawn— The pawn that will reach the end and become the Queen..." In the time of war, pawn is the best position to be. Weakest, and negligible, but if careless, it would turn into the strongest player on the board.

watery knew she was uniquely positioned to take this quest. Her flying capability could bypass the danger in the forest at night. The quest said that the spring glowed under the full moon, too. Her hypothesis was either somehow the lunar cycle influence the water body to glow by its own, or the moonlight was reflected on the water. The quest did say that it was glowing under the moonlight. So, she leaned on her second interpretation. Since tomorrow night was one, she decided to take it.

it was annoying. The sky was cloudy, which meant that the moonlight would be touching the water body so faintly. She wanted to see what was special about this water. She want to try to replace her body with it, to see if there was an effect at all. but, in this weather, she couldn't see any glowing spring at all.

she looked around, seeing if there was a spring that glowed on its own. Lowering herself under the tree canopy, she began to search for the mythical water.

as time passed, she submerged herself in every spring she could find. But, none of them was any different than normal water. None of them was special to her senses. she moved toward the east to see if there was any spring in that direction.

She gave up. Even on the eastern part of the forest, she did not feel it. Turning her head to look at the sky, she saw clouds still covering the moon. a faint hint of the moonlight pierced the cloud. Her internal clock said that it was already past midnight.

Thus, she went above the trees once again, toward the sky.

from the above, she looked for any spring which she could see, where the moonlight was reflected. memorizing those locations, she waited for the sky to clear.

Time passed. The cloud still did not move away. It was still covering the sky. Before dawn... she had to pick one spring among the one she visited, the one whom she believed could be reached by moonlight. She did not know which one among them was the origin of moonlight water.

Or... she could take them all. It was five bottle, so could just took enough water from each spring to fill five bottle each, right? At least, one of them should be moonlight water.

She folded the water from the first spring in her subspace, storing it in the form of ice cube. After storing it in her body, she moved to the second spring, third spring, and so on. After that, she returned to the guild.

To the receptionist, she asked 30 bottles for this task and a basin. She couldn't differentiate between these waters at all. Instead, she just gave it as is. As these ice cube left her body, it was no longer on her domain and unfolded, expanding to its original size. Making a pick with her normal water, she destroyed the ice block and put it into the bottles. Grouping them into six group of five bottle, she gave them to the receptionist.

Niror would’ve thought her first day in the city would be peaceful and she would be able to comprehend everything - she was very, very wrong. There were too many people for her to listen to, so much for her trying to learn something from people talking. Someone selling hay? Someone selling medicine… Why is something selling ruined clothing? Niror looked down at her dress and then tugging on her cloak - she will admit the clothing she labeled as ‘ruined’ was better than hers.

She rubbed her forehead gently, as she quietly snaked her way through the crowd. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea for her to visit the market first? What else was there? She thought all human places were small, using tents and whatnot. She couldn’t believe what she saw when she first saw the wall in the distance. Her first day in the city has already been stressful and she has only been here for a few minutes! How can humans deal with all this information flying around!

Dragging her heavy self out of the market place, she caught an interesting conversation about slimes. Why are they talking about slimes? Sewer slimes? Why- Why did they have sewer slimes in such a place? Why don’t they kill them all? Niror brought her small hand to her forehead, she’s overthinking too much and trying to figure out a way to kill slimes, what’s wrong with her. Being lost in thought and absently walking, she suddenly felt like she hit a wall moving back to look up at what stopped her in her place.

Who greeted Niror? A large tall man, slightly bulky and his face saying “I’m a good guy.” written all over it. “Whoa, there lass.” He stared down at Niror, examining like he was looking at a painting he wanted to buy. A shiver ran through her spine; she just had an awful feeling before he shifted his gaze to her hood. “Where are you walking around like a zombie for, lass?” She fidged slightly, playing with her hands before looking to the side. “Th-The guide.” She spoke softly, even though it was soft it was clear as ice.

Why did she say the guide? Well, she heard people talking about doing quests and getting money for it. She needed this so-called money, everyone was asking for it buy things. Like a new dress, shoes, and whatnot. Her body isn’t strong enough to last - hell she doesn’t even think she can handle a slime currently. Returning her attention back to the man, who was rubbing his chin staring at her intently. “I can lead you there.” He finally spoke after a few moments of silence. “You see I’m about to head there, just finished a quest myself!” The man let out a soft laugh. “I’ll tell you about the city as well! It seems like you are new here so at least I can do.” He smiled before turned around, motioning her to follow.

By the time they got to the entrance of the guide building Niror’s processes were hurting, why is this guy a chatterbox?! Why won’t he wait a few moments for me to make a map of the city and the other areas? Her thoughts got interrupted by the man once more; “We’re here! Well, I’m going to head in first.” He waved before walking in the guide.

Finally! Niror rubbed her temples. So much information, god damn he needs to talk slower. Like he was malfunction core, they spawn out tons and tons of slimes at a time without stopping! She shivered at the thought. What core in their right mind spawn so many slimes… I guess looking at me at least they are doing a better job at getting supplies. She let out a sigh before looking towards the large doors before pushing them open making her way into the building.

She stopped as she entered - wait are they gonna ask my species? Wait wait wait! What should I say? Vampire? Dungeon Core? Crap! Crap! I didn’t think of this possibly! Ugh! He got my head working overtime with all this information! To the spirits with it! I’m just going to get help - and then slop down onto the floor.

Random Egg (it might hatch!)
It's time. I tried to push this back, knowing how hard it was going to be, but in the end, I don't have a choice but to keep going onwards. Keep growing stronger and keep earning more money so that my family can survive. So it is time to do this - I can't just keep pushing things back for a later point.

With an aching heart, I hand in my sword and sling, knowing full well that I won't be able to put up a proper fight against anything without my sword. Meaning that this time, it's all about surviving in the wild as well as avoiding combat. Which... I should be able to do. Thus I get going, into the ravine.

Once inside, I immediately creep forward through the forest, my knife drawn as I carefully listen to every sound around me in an attempt to discover and avoid any dangers which might be around. This strategy works quite well due to my sharp ears, and I manage to move deeper into the ravine without having to fight anything.

Along the way, I find a few plants I know with edible parts and harvest those before moving in. It won't taste good, but it will do as food. In that manner, I continue to progress through the ravine, getting closer and closer to the mountain. However, monsters are getting more frequent, so I have to slow down, traveling a snaking path onwards in order to avoid combat.

It also gets harder and harder to find a good place to sleep - though I mostly resort to sleeping on trees. But with the giant cobwebs I've noticed from time to time, I don't think that really is much of an option anymore. With a sleepless night, I manage to push through the last area of the ravine and reach the mountain. My food-supplies are going to last me a few days, and I have some water stashed in hollow fruits as well.

With my supplies prepared I get a good night's rest in a lone tree with thick foliage near the mountain and then proceed to climb up the mountain trail at the back of the mountain. Now... for the hard part. Staying hidden from monster birds on a bare mountain. Luckily enough, there are various caves, holes, cracks, and overhangs around to hide in - which I use as cover whilst slowly but surely ascending the mountain.

It is exhausting and my stockpile of food and water dwindles, but as evening falls, I finally spot a giant nest. After hiding in a nearby crevice, I wait for night to fall. A few minutes later one of these giant birds lands in the nest and warms up its eggs, slowly falling asleep. Great. I force myself to stay awake, waiting until the night is deep. Then I sneak towards the nest, draw the knife, and cut open its throat with all of my force.

Its eyes snap open and it tries to attack me but I quickly retreat and watch it bleed out. Then I push the corpse off the nest, happy that it is quite secluded from the other nests, snatch the first egg I can find and stash it in my bag, then hurriedly descend the mountain. By the time the sun rises, I am already almost back in the ravine.

From this point on, it's essentially the same as my way to the mountain - only with the birds making a commotion on the mountain. Good thing I'm long gone. While I did almost get discovered a few times on my way back through the ravine, I successfully managed to evade combat and return to the guild, triumphantly presenting the egg as I hand in my report.

Deciding to keep up a streak of quests, Sen decided to apply for the ‘office work’ quest. It seemed to be fairly simple, if not tedious, and spending a day indoor immersed with work doesn’t sound that bad once in a while.

“You’re applying for the office work? Hmm. Do you have any prior experience or education?” the receptionist asked after seeing the quest paper Sen gave him.

“No, I’ve never done any office work before,” Sen answered. “I do know how to count and write, though.”

“Is that so? …Very well. Please follow me,” the receptionist replied as he got up from his seat.

He then led Sen further into the building to a room on the end of a hallway. It was a small room with a thick smell of ink, along with numerous piles of papers and books inside and a few desks crammed into one side.

“This’ll be your workplace for today; I’d like you to process the documents there to the best of your ability, as many as you can before this afternoon. Is that acceptable?” the receptionist shortly explained.

“Yeah, I think I can do that,” Sen answered.

“Thank you. If you need anything else, you can find me at the reception desk in front,” he replied before returning to his station. Soon after, Sen took a stack of documents, sat himself down, and started working on them.

At first, Sen was having difficulty going through the documents, especially the ones with big numbers to check, thus causing him to take quite some time to finish the first stack. But as he continued working, Sen gradually got accustomed to them and managed to get slightly faster at processing the documents. By the end of his shift, Sen has managed to finish four stacks' worth of documents.

QUEST REPORT (APPRAISED)
Quest Report (50)
Name
: Felicia El Freliti Ari Fiel
Level: 9 (10035/9000) ???
Quest: Hanging from the Gallows
Evaluation:
  • Rescued Old Larry from the gallows of Spire Reef
**********
After successfully recruiting the Dark Siren to their side, as suspicious as the crew may be to her motives, Raeliana broke the news of a terrible announcement. Old Larry, a mute old pirate that had been a member of the Red Serpents since Rae's father's time had been captured by the Silver Sharks during their disastrous raid not too long ago. An announcement was broadcasted, informing all pirates that the old man would be executed in eight hours.

The pirate crew initially was hopeful, since everyone had thought that Old Larry had perished after blocking a sword wound for their captain, but now it was reported that he was still alive and kicking. But their mood was immediately dampened by the next set of news.

"Damn it all! They're playin' us fer fools!" Raeliana exclaimed angrily, kicking over a nearby barrel in frustration. "We won't let 'em get away with this, yer hear me lads! Old Larry's done so much fer us, we'd be damned straight to hell if we dun't try an' save 'im now!"

Motivated by her rage and passion-filled roar, the crew took up arms once again, ready to save the old pirate who was like a father figure to them.

In a shadowy corner of the deck, the Dark Siren smiled vaguely and calmly at the lively scene.
----------
Unfortunately, by some strange stroke of luck, Ari was tasked with the most dangerous and important task of all, despite being one of the newer members of the pirate crew. Swirling the murky vial in her hands expressionlessly, she set off, knowing full well that the trust the Red Serpents had put in her could be broken if she failed here today.

"Behold ladies and gents, Old Larry of the Red Serpents, also known as the Crimson Dragon's Shield is..."

As the man on the gallows' platform excitedly announced today's events, Ari ignored his arrogant voice and focused her attention on the scene before her. Standing in a hidden alleyway away from the crowd, she calmly gulped the vial's contents, its vile taste stinging her throat as she watched herself slowly become invisible. Touching her equipment one by one, they slowly turned invisible too, before she carefully hoisted them onto her waist and belt. Carefully, she weaved past the growing crowd towards the rear end of the gallows.

Knocking on the wooden structure twice discreetly, she awaited the drama to begin.

"How dare ya think that you can just kill one of my men right in front of me, who do ya think ye are?" An icy yet arrogant voice roared, as Raeliana waltzed towards the gallows with simmering fury, having heard Ari's signal.

"Oho, so yer show yerself after all, little princess of da Crimson Dragon." He responded with mocking joy, as the pirates standing guard suddenly stood firm, watching Raeliana and the other Red Serpents behind her warily.

As the pair started conversing, Ari immediately started the plan. Silently, careful to avoid the squeaky boards she had been warned about by her crewmates, and avoiding touching anything she shouldn't make invisible, Ari made her way up the stairs of the gallows. Squatting behind Old Larry, she tapped her shoes lightly twice to inform him of her presence. After years of experience, Larry remained perfectly still after realizing she was there, even breathing a little heavier as if he was afraid to mask Ari's breathing.

Taking two vials of a different strange liquid from her pocket, she discreetly poured the contents onto the chains restricting him. Since Larry was quite well known, many knew that mere ropes would not be able to restrict the old man, hence Rae gave Ari vials of liquid that could corrode metal. As the chains silently dissolved from existence, Rae's yell suddenly roared once again.

"That's enough! I'll show yer not to mess with the Red Serpents, ya stupid old fish, charge!"

Chaos suddenly ensued as the Silver Sharks standing by burst forth to battle against the charge of the Red Serpents. The guards standing beside Old Larry did not move, having been instructed to guard him no matter what, but they still eagerly looked towards the battle. Making use of the chaos, Ari tapped Old Larry's skin and his clothes to turn him invisible and quickly retreated from the scene. Immediately after realizing the rescue was successful, Rae called back her men and dashed back towards their pirate ship, acting as if they were aggrieved by the loss of Larry/afraid of the might of the Silver Sharks. Dashing towards the alleyway, Ari passed Old Larry the weapon prepared for him as they made their way back to Rae and the pirate ship, eager to reunite Rae with the figure that resembled a close uncle to her.

Waking up rather drowsily, still, in the same clothes I could not remove, my pupils despise exhaustion, immediately noticed that shape in the corner. I let out a sigh and wondered when did he get inside. All I remember is drinking in the tavern then going to sleep, but now, he is here?

“Paul… what’re you doing?”
No replies? Unfortunately, I felt forced to get out of bed and kick him to see whether he was asleep or not. Could he not wait somewhere or find him in the streets as he always does? A sigh left his mouth as he scratched his head.

“Morning El…”
How coincidental, it is indeed morning. Now, just wake up and leave. Slowly standing up and staring at me, the fool rubbed his eyes. I pointed at the door and motioned him to leave.
“Ah… why are you--”
I may have questions about who is 'El' but I am not curious enough to inquire about it.

“Now, that you’re awake. Get out.”
Unable to sleep or to think properly, Paul simply listened to my orders and left the room as I rubbed my temples. How did he enter without the key? When he left, the door was still closed, and so is the windows. When I slipped under the blanket, the windows were closed. Can he go through walls or something? Surely, he cannot. Otherwise, that would mean that he is a ghost. Is he? Whatever. It is not as if I can guess anything with no clues or information.

At least, seeing him incited me to wake up and kick his ass… I still wish to go back to bed. After all, today we are going to hunt a boar. Hopefully, it will not be too difficult. For me, there is only one way to kill a boar, by using magic. Because, in all honesty, me using a knife? There are more chances of hurting myself than cutting a wild animal. I looked around and saw something on the ground… in the corner to be more precise, it is likely something Paul has left behind and… oh. That is a carving knife. Good grief, what if he lost it? So careless.

Afterwards, I left, had breakfast and headed towards the forest to… track an animal. Hopefully a boar, a deer, or something I am more or less familiar with. A deer would be perfect. Facing a creature that could crush me… well, at least, I know how boars react. But… I never hunted. It is gonna be troublesome for sure…

“Hey, do you mind being a bait?”
While I could not see Paul, I was able to swear on my soul that I could feel him in the surroundings. Observing me. At that moment, his hand fell upon my shoulder as I let out a sigh and pursed my lips. How troublesome.

“Of course. You have to do it without help after all.”
Let’s ask something else.

“You will help me carry the prey to the cook then.”
Whether he wishes it or not, he will do so. Otherwise, I would keep my mouth quiet. His pupils contracted but then returned to their normal states, he simply nodded as we continued to devel more deeply into the forest until we find a proper prey.
At some point, Paul whispered that there was a prey at a few dozens of meters at the Northwest of our position. That made me curious regarding how he could know that there was an animal there without even seeing it.

I tried to suppress the noises I could make with my footing pace by using Air Magic. To be more precise, I could run yet make no noises thanks to it, my feet do not touch the soil, however… it is extremely unsteady. So whether I run or not, I will fall. A correct analogy would be a clown trying to keep his balance on a rolling ball while having moist feet, making it rather easy to slip and fall.
So what happened? I fell, many times. Yet it made no noises.
One of the most problematic issues was that… it used a lot, really, a lot of mana. Perhaps was it because I hadn’t practised since a while and thus it used more than it should due to my inefficiency… in any case! At some point I was nearby the animal, I was there, hiding behind a tree, there was likely less than 3 feet between the prey and… it or me? Good question.

It was… a boar. Was I that unlucky… should I be thankful that it didn’t smell my unfamiliar scent yet? Do I have one? Right. I never noticed until now but… okay, let’s think about that later. Once this creature’s done and dead.
First, find a way to knock it out then kill it while it’s unconscious. Sounds like… a plan? Crude and simple. Efficient? I don’t know. I am a merchant, sir! It just needs a blunt impact on the head and it’s out!

Uh… crushing against a tree maybe? Provoke it and wait that it charges against a tree? Mmmm. What about… rock. I could make one with magic and try to block the boar with my ha-- no no! The impact will send me flying!

Okay, let’s just do it again and again and again until it gets knocked out then! At some point, it will fall. As for now, let’s just face the boar! Wonder why it’s alone though. Immediately, the first thing I did was poking it with an Ice Spear and it-- turned fearful and charged at me. Fortunately, since I anticipated it, it crashed against the tree behind me… although, it was not enough. The innocent beast seemed to be stunned for a second or two until I tried to pierce its eye… since it’s the least resistant part of the body… but hey! My aim is off! I instead poked its neck, it barely damaged the hide since I didn’t put much strength in this attack.

Following this movement, I did the same thing a second time, but this time, I wanted more time for it to be quicker! Thus the crash against the tree would be more significant. So first, I chose a more distanced tree and waited that it approaches me before sidestepping at the last second.
Everything went according to my plan, it was knocked out but… its unconscious body fell on my foot. Luckily, boars aren’t that heavy… and it was only its side that fell on me but that was worrisome since I had no way to avoid it. Sidestepping didn’t allow me to take much distance.

Anyway, it was time for me to finish it. Just piercing its throat as deeply as possible should be good, right? If it can’t breathe, it will die. Alright, just… make an Earth Spear and make it sharp, as sharp possible. Like these primitive weapons made with wood and rock. As long as the tip is as sharp as a knife, and as hard as flint…
One… two… three!

And then… I think it died? I could feel the flesh from the spear. It seemed to be… stuck? Okay, okay… just remove the spear. And call out for Paul, he must know more than me!

“Usually, people corner the boar then finish it with a dagger.”
Paul arrived with a dagger and… finished the boar I suppose? I am unsure. Was it still alive? Was I bad or…

“It was just in case.”
Wait, we could have just checked if its heart was still beating… that sounds risky. Approaching your ear nearby the beast… Paul did well indeed. Then he turned his head towards me and asked a question, which was worth thinking about.
“Do we need to skin it..?”

Since the cook wished for it. The answer is likely yes. On top of that, we could take the hide and sell it. No, I could take the hide! That was my hunting mission after all!
“Let’s skin it at the kitchen, we take the hide, the tusk, hand out a report and we are done with it.”

Paul seemed to agree with me. A chef doesn’t need the tusk and the hide. Thus, we should lessen his workload! Anyway, we were now carrying the boar to the city. It’s… not as heavy as I thought? Or perhaps was it because we were two carrying it. Its weight was nearing the 100 kg so… I suppose that. As long as the two carriers can carry an adult woman each, it means that they can carry the boar!

While we were carrying it, we were discussing. I decided to directly go towards the crux of our problems. Ironically, that’s me.

“Hey, wanna speak about it? But in more details.”
“Only if you give me a hint about what was wrong about my question.”

I suppose it made him curious, eh? That’s right. It was about the hallucination I kept seeing, this sort of man clad in a dark cloak… similar to me, but in more… childish? As in, that-- a ghost, let’s call it a ghost. Only wore one colour! It was only black! How ugly!
Alright, I am not that much better… but I cannot remove these clothes even if I try, thus I am automatically forgiven. Unless people don’t know, and, well, they don’t. Uh.

“The figure is not blurry at all. Each time it happens, everything I see seems to be darkened, as I am gradually losing sight. The whispers I could hear become louder and louder and then-- it just disappears.”

Now it was his turn to give me something informative, interesting. Something I could deal with properly. Likely, he understood on its own and does not need me to hint him.

“Let’s see… first, this is not a hallucination. It’s something that only you, yes, only you can hear, touch and speak to it. Then, regarding its origins. That person must be blood-related to you. Is that enough?”

Interesting enough, however, I guessed it because of his questions. Nonetheless, he confirmed my suspicions, thus it was better than nothing. What could I lose by telling him what I noticed? Correction, by partially telling him what I perceived.
“I was hoping you would tell me the differences between a shade that is blurry, and one that is not.”

“Mmmm. The shade… must have been in the same situation as you.”
Ah. Wait... this… I need to keep my mouth shut. Was it not supposed to be only a fairy tale to scare off children… haha. Surprisingly enough, it was a true story? Mmmmm. That is an unexpected hint. If I was still in my homeworld, I would seek out any relics or ruins that could help me discover the truth! Alas, it is too late now.

“I see. That’s enough information for today.”
Actually… it is not too late. Since Paul knows about it, it means that there must be something about these… shadows. Let’s call them shadows. However… why did it appear after I died? Why is it an entity that was blood-related to me? How exactly did the first ‘shadow’ appear? Is it… normal that I look like such a creature?

“Something else. They are inextricably tied to magic. As for how… good question.”
Could you be less oblivious than that? You just want me to deepen my knowledge about magic so I can give you more information. While I admit that I am curious… magic requires money! And I do not have a sustainable income! Perhaps I could try buying shares from a company. Then live peacefully. Unfortunately, my knowledge is lacking, I need to know which company is reliable, I need to enter into higher circles of society and such things…
But with such an outfit? That I cannot remove? Appearance and attitude are important unless you have an unimaginable sum of money. So far, if faced with such high figures, I can only possess the right attitude and nothing else.

….ah. How troublesome. I wish I could… exploit the forest more quickly. Yes, I need to meet up with Lily! I have a Carving Knife now! We can go… I will just need to ask her how did it go with her scouting.

Anyway, once we arrived at Scribel, we carried the boar at the kitchen. Asked under the scolding of the chief if we could skin it right away so not to lose time. While he disliked the idea of us using his kitchen to skin the boar… he may have understood that we have no other place to do it? And honestly, doing it on the ground outside seemed like a poor idea.

Anyway, once we were out and finished with the skinning. I stared at Paul who seemed to be ready to leave.
“Meet me tomorrow evening at the South Gate, good enough for you? Until then, don’t look for me. Otherwise, it won’t end well.”

Unsure about what I mean, it likely roused his curiosity. Nonetheless, my warning would be taken into account. That is simple, I was cooperative, yet I did not tell him everything. He likely knows it.
“Don’t worry about that. See ya tomorrow.”

Afterwards, I came here and handed my report to you.

Being a night shift receptionist has its perks. The less traffic in the night meant that she had to pull a double duty of sorting the quest completion reports, servicing the adventurer that came inside, and making a check on the quest board to see if there are quest paper on the board that need to be refilled. for the quest board, she had ensured each repeatable quest has sufficient copy for it. She didn't know who wrote those quest copies, as there was no hint of typesetter in this world she had found. But, she thanked them nonetheless.

Sorting through the quest reports was easy enough. it was not like she has to mark it for completion or something. Well... if it was something like bringing items as proof of completion like slime cores and rat tails, she could just use that as proof and mark it as complete. But, for others she would need an actual proof from the employer, thus it was not her jurisdiction for that night.

therefore, after all those tasks were completed, she had nothing to do. She had no adventurer in the night, coming to her. She felt lonely...

The person in front of her submitted some kind of meat to her. Well... since she saw the boar skin in the adventurer's hand, she assumed that this was the game meat the man hunted. Thus, she marked it for completion and give the adventurer's reward.

Quest: Hanging from the Gallows

The man was saved. She guessed the report should be marked as complete then. Though, somehow this report was mixed with the scribel region's report... must be clerical error, she thought.

then, she just need to deliver it to the spire reef's branch, right? Preparing the adventurer's reward, she marked it for courier service to spire reef. Hopefully the adventurer could get their reward.

[UNAPPRAISED]

Right. this one was easy to check. She went to the archive and looked at the pile. it was another quest report she guessed. after she filed them in their cabinet, she confirmed the adventurer's success. Then, the next thing was to mark it as complete. Thus, she prepared 10G of reward, and note for the next day receptionist for when the adventurer come the next day.

OOC: please mark it as complete. Rewarded 10G/35XP.

UNAPPRAISED

"Congratulation adventurer, for your successful rank up mission."

Another adventurer had ranked up. Soon, she will be too.

"You can pick the certificate in two days here, adventurer. Meanwhile, please accept this money as our token of appreciation for your hard work."

Taking out 30G, she gave it to the adventurer.

OOC: please mark the quest as completed. 400EXP/30G/rank E certificate given, random egg returned to you.

I’m just going to get help - and then slop down onto the floor.
ah... it was another introductory quest huh. since she managed to arrive here, there was no problem then, in marking it as complete and set it for archive. hopefully the person would appear later.

OOC: 35 EXP rewarded. Please mark it as complete.

Another introductory quest. she filed it as complete. Though... if the adventurer wanted to plot something, he shouldn't write it in the quest report.

OOC: 35EXP rewarded.

after no one came anymore and all report sorted, she waited until the morning, where she was relieved of her task by the next receptionist.

After his last task, Vesper heads to the nearby forest. Because he didn’t want to buy something he probably will never use again, Vesper heads to the city’s woodcutter to borrow an axe and cart.

He started to cut a few fat branches from each tree. As a beastkin, he had more feeling for the natural world than most people, he didn’t want to cut down an entire tree. Vesper cut down a batch of fat branches from several trees and started to cut off the end of the branches with leaves.

When he cleans off the leaves, Vesper puts all the wood inside the cart and hooks the axe to his belt. He pushes the wood cart off to town, happy with finishing his work. He turns the wood in and returns the axe and cart to the woodcutter.

Niror slowly sat herself down onto a chair at one of the empty spots - now she won’t be fooled again by how easy a quest looks! Humans and their counterparts are hard to deal with! Monsters were so easier - well… Depends if said monster listens to you. Shaking her head as a large stack of papers was placed to the side of her as the staff member walks away without staying a word.

These… All have to be sorted… Niror stared at the large pile of papers - how should she sort them? She blinked slightly, based off of the paper as if it was a quest, warehouse details and so on. She rubbed her forehead gently, before picking the first paper reading over it. A quest? Mmm… She skimmed the paper before grabbing a clip, putting the paper into the clip. She sorted each paper, using five clips for each clamping them shut when the pile was getting too big for the clip then placing the pile of papers to the side.

She thought she only had to do this one large pile, but when the pile of papers kept coming one after the other when she was just about finished she knew this was going to be longer than she expected. She once again thought this quest was going to be easy, now she is paying for her mistake.

As she finally finished the stacks of papers, having them in their respected places she let out a sigh of relief rubbing her small hands gently. She thought she was finally done with this quest - once more she was wrong as a staff member walked over to her. “Ah looks like you are finished.” She spoke, staring at Niror like she was prey. “You can take the front of my post.” She gave a sly smile, ushering Niror to stand and to go to the front.

“Here you can use this - due to you being short.” The lady grabbed two old-looking books placing them onto the chair. Niror’s right eye twitched from this. You’re going to use a book? Why not just… To the spirits with it! This quest is going to kill me, sorting was fine but now I’m stuck doing this?! Why am I going to be the night person? Why aren’t you gonna do this?! You were here last night! As her mind was in turmoil she was lifted like you would a child before being placed.

“Make sure to do a good job or I’ll fail you.” She gave another smile, before disappearing into the back. This sentence alone made Niror feel defeated; she needs the money so she has to suck it up doesn’t she? She gently ran her hand through her hair before just turning on her autopilot to do her newfound work - luckily she can use her other instance to handle this so she can do other things.

After seemly hours of being on autopilot, the normal receptionist came back, staring at Niror as she worked. “Seems cheap when you can do this faster than others.” Hearing the voice of the receptionist, she turned to look to her breaking out of her autopilot. “I guess so…” Niror muttered quietly, rubbing her small hands. “Anyway, you are good to go.” She patted Niror’s head before lifting her out of the chair. “Make sure to submit your report.” Niror just nodded getting out of the guide as fast as possible. She still needed to find a place to lay down; she doesn’t really need sleep luckily.
