    I am afraid that I have not read many of the older shonen manga.

    There are a lot of good ones. I would recommend you to read them. Not the most popular(Naruto, Bleach, One piece), but slightly less popular one. Toriko, FMA, Magi, Soul Eater, Beelzebub, and the list goes on. I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised by at least some of them.
