If you want your site to grow fast then to be frank being accepting of everything including nsfw does that. That's how patreon originally blew up and became popular.

A small budget and a small team. Big budget stuff almost always falls on its face because of feature creep and a desire to put all that money and manpower to work making something epic- epic is not scary.
Write from the heart and don't navel-gaze it. It's counter intuitive but thinking too much or too deeply about a project is often harmful when it comes to being creative. Not always easy, especially for those of us who are obsessive or perfectionist.

I suspect why a lot of dungeon setting stories do well early on is because the plot is super straight forward- grow become more powerful etc, very few characters, lots of fighting.
