First off, lemme just ask a preference of you guys: do you prefer a female MC more or a male MC more?
and secondly, which is actually the topic that I wanted to discuss: what is your ideal lead (romantic interest) in a story?
Name your favorite stereotypes below, or explain them in thorough detail, I'm just lazy

Mine:
For male love interests
- doting husband
- manipulative yandere
- boy next door
For female interests
- tomboy
- the villainess
- sweet, gentle, and will fucking die if a gust of wind hits her too hard (the pitiful)

I prefer male MCs. As for love interests, i tend to be biased for affectionate, loyal and slightly yandere kuudere sister types. Well that last one is a personal fetish tho. But still.

Male MC here. I can't exactly put it in words but I like girls who look and act like this

Male Mc, I don't like love interest that is too whiny, or noisy in any case, and... redhead... got to love those...

Nowadays I almost exclusively read Female MC stories as those are the ones I prefer, but every now and then I find one with a Male MC I like.

For the love interests, let's see... Primarily, I want them to be well developed and not determined by a single stereotype, so... Rather than saying the ones I like (because I can like pretty much anything, for as long as it's well made), I'll say the ones I detest, as those are almost impossible to salvage.

Male Love Interests I hate:
The Perfect Guy.
The Ruthless "evil" guy that has a soft spot for the MC and only her for seemingly no reason except her being the protagonist of the story.
That one guy that just so happens to have more power than the MC, and even though the MC should be perfectly capable of handling herself, she ends up always needing to be saved by him.

Female Love Interests I hate: (I'm assuming a Female MC btw)
The girl that is head over heels about the MC and loves everything she does no matter how stupid it is and even though she is painfully obviously in love with the MC, she never makes any move, nor does the MC have a slight clue about her friend's attraction to her.

Female Love Interests I hate: (Now assuming a Male MC)
The Busty Onee-san type that is defined by her breasts and the fact she is an Onee-san character and absolutely nothing else.

I think those are pretty much it, I think I can like almost anything else for as long as the characters are properly developed, like... If I look at their actions and they seem to make sense and their reasonings feel sensible, then I usually can like the character.

I still don't get why they do this. It's an exclusively hentai troupe that is nothing more than a perfect, one-off character for oppai action.

Important to the plot and the MC's development. I prefer intelligent, manipulative, and slightly selfish fl's/ml's. As long as the selfish part isn't done too much.

Male MCs preferred since I can relate better, but it's like, I prefer male MCs 51% of the time and female MCs 49% of the time.

As for love interests...

Male:
Older and fatherly/brotherly.
Caring and kind.
A switch.
Basically a total bro - the kind of guy who considers you his best friend while having a crush on you, always happy to see you and do things with you.
Either gruff or somewhat of a pretty boy.
For anybody familiar with FFXIV: Haurchefant, Aymeric, and G'raha Tia. More recently, Silverash (Silverdaddy) from Arknights.
...
or alternatively, Astolfo.

Female:
The intelligent and teasing type - the kind of girl who has equal power in the relationship if not more.
On the taller end of things, or equal height.
A switch.
Calm and collected most of the time, holding back her obvious desires. Very much in love but just acts chill about it.
Sticks up for you and will cut a bitch if anybody hurts you. Or if anybody hurts her.
For anybody familiar with the Monogatari series: Senjougahara and, to a lesser degree, (adult) Shinobu.

Love interest really depends on the MC. Regardless of gender I prefer a balanced pair. Yin and yang. An extrovert and an introvert. Logical to emotional. Serious to silly. Not everything personality wise has to be that way, but it does leaf to more lively characters.

To answer the question though: female MC for me. More relatable I guess.

I still don't get why they do this. It's an exclusively hentai troupe that is nothing more than a perfect, one-off character for oppai action.
If it was exclusive to hentai, I would have never seen those since I actively avoid R-18 works with big breasted characters, it just doesn't appeal to me. Those are basically shallow one-dimensional characters that are defined solely by the trope that was incorporated unto them during the character creation.

And I have no clue why anyone would make a boring one-dimensional character with no redeeming traits to themselves, it's just horrible writing I guess.

Depends entirely on the personality of the MC and how they play off each other. Like your examples... a manipulative yandere would go great with a villainous (who was actually a villainous and not a moron harem collector reincarnated villainous). Evil power couple? Love it. Snort it like salt. But a yandere with a weak pitiful type? Ech. Icky.

I don't really have any archetype for MC or LI that I favour anymore because I've seen so many archetypes I used to like executed so poorly I know clench my entire asshole back into my body in fear and unwillingness whenever I see certain keywords, thinking like "oh boy oh fuck let's see how this goes I'm scared right now".

This reminds me of that old adage "people who are nice to you but rude to the waiter, are not a nice person". Personally, I'm also team "fuck this LI". Not just because there's no logical reason he's nice to the MC except "protag halo", which is also dumb, but also it's just a skeezy character. It also speaks to the morals of the MC (and considering MCs usually have to be so noble~ it's doubly stupid) that she's willing to date a guy who is nice to her but rude to the waiter, y'know.
Bruh I’m low key writing the male yandere x villainess rn. They are not straight out evil, just dubious morality with enough transmigration in their pockets where it’s more fun to fuck with people then off them. But ML is still blood thirsty and FL is also a yandere tbh. Fuckers are codependent as shit.

Depends on my mood, but I tend to like female MCs more since most male MCs I find tend to be losers, perverts, or simply one dimensional characters (not that female MCs can't be, but since I'm a girl I relate better, I guess).
As for love interests, for boys I strangely like tsunderes, though I mostly like the strong ones who are loyal to MC. For other features... as long as the character it's well-made and has more going for him than just "he's nice" then I'm fine with everything.
For girls, I like shy girls who grow into themselves and become more confident as the story progresses. Sweet girls, in a word. I completely despise tsunderes, and the "onee-san" type.

These days I almost exclusively only read female MC novels. Well, I do read some male MC too, if you count gender bender mate to female as one. The only exceptions for actual male MC that I like are those where the male MC have no romantic situation whatsoever. Those parenting type of novels or maybe just something that's fully action oriented but not in an edgy way(mondaiji is the best example for what I mean though arguably the MC is not only Izayoi).

As for love interest, girls love/yuri no doubt. Personality-wise tsundere or overly-obedient girls are nice, though I mostly won't complain as long as it's yuri.

I mostly read male MC stories not because they’re better but because they tend to be a more generic or bland which makes them fun for escapism reading.

However if there is a solid revenge plot line or it’s a romance story I prefer a female MC as revenge just feels better to me from a female POV and romance from a male perspective is really hard to immerse into.

Love interest (Male MC Female love interest)
-Girls with a modest bust so their breasts don’t become the defining feature
-intelligent so they can think for themselves in a crisis
-Independent, they on their own rights should be able to hold their own and the MC needs to be able to rely on them from time to time

Love interest (Male MC Male love interest)
- if adventure, practically a damsel in distress in order to lean heavily on the male MC
- if BL aloof to everyone around him but lovey-dovey with the MC
- trap rarely, if the MC is bi more frequently

Love interest (Male MC Bisexual)
- Male and Female compete for the exclusive attention of the MC
- opposite personalities from the Female and Male love interests, if one is hard the other is soft.
- as stated above trap love interests or at least androgynous for males
- female love interest has zero attraction to the male love interest as it tends to turn a bit pornographic or NTR if she does

Love interest (Female MC male love interest)
-Some defining flaw that keeps pushing them away despite the interest (I.E. he thinks women don’t belong in the work force but she’s his boss/employee, they have great chemistry but he is known womanizer, etc)
- Strong support especially in revenge stories, she should take the center stage but he should be placing the spotlight on that stage.
- competing male love interests, without an obvious bias on the part of the MC.

Love interest (Female MC female love interest)
- focus on the normality of a relationship instead of a focus on the taboo and erotic
- mostly platonic at first with a natural relationship developing over time.
- No. Butch. Love. Interest. Strong or dominant is fine but the trope of “who’s the man” is tired, annoying, and wrong.

Love interest (Female MC bisexual)
- Male can be a trap or androgynous but can’t be a sissy or submissive so usually that rules out traps.
- Female love interest is a once scorned lover or ex or an unrequited love. I really enjoy it when the two female characters have a history and the male interest has a bit of push and pull.
-again the female and male love interests can’t be into each other as the risk for it to turn NTR or a bit pornographic.

There’s more I could add for each section and every story doesn’t have to have all of them but I like one or two from my list to make an appearance. Ultimately if the story is good I can take any love interest but I do like it when a story has something specific that scratches that itch for me.

I can say I’m really tired of the massive breasts focus, if the female love interests defining characteristic is mammary first I really struggle to keep reading.

*nod nod nod* That is pretty annoying too.

I mean, if the Male Love Interest actually puts a strong facade, but actually has a soft spot inside of him that he shows when he is away from school or something, then it becomes a lot easier to like him. But when the soft spot is exclusively related to the MC it's... *pukes blood*

Oh yeah, I hate those too. Needing to have a "man" in the relationship annoys me to no end.

Male Love Interests
-Those love interests that have a dark and mysterious past filled with regret, guilt, and trauma. They seek forgiveness and to atone for their actions. Perhaps they have someone important to them that they are trying to save. They need a female lead to forgive, comfort, and console them for they cannot do it themselves. :blob_hmm_two:
-The ones that are extremely awkward around girls and don't know how to act properly. They are easily embarrassed and avoidant, but somehow can't escape the female lead that unwittingly continues to embarrass them and melt their heart. :blob_dizzy:
-Bad boys, who aren't too bad. :blob_shade:

Female Love Interests
-Extremely prideful girls who gets super embarrassed from improprieties and awkward situations. They become incoherent, yell loudly or have trouble speaking entirely, and storm off while blushing furiously. :blob_uwu: :blob_blank: :blob_hmph: :blob_pout: pout pout pout
-Stupidly cute girls who are actually really kind even when they are trying to be mean. :blob_evil_two: :blob_cookie:
-Cowardly, easily embarrassed, fumbling and clumsy girls who are very nice. You wish you could help them when they mess up, BUT YOU CAN'T. :blob_pat_sad:

For protagonist... I definitely prefer Male to Female Gender Bender protagonists above all others... Aside from that, I prefer Female over Male...

For love interests... So long as the protagonist isn't Male, the love interests "can" be, but in general, I prefer Female love interests either way...

"Ideal" love interest... Or... Love interest & protagonist pair... Might be Cute Submissive Female (GB) protagonist paired with a Sexy Dominant Female love interest... One who likes to play BDSM "games".
