i have a hard time imagining a scenario where using a psp as your controller is the optimal thing to do

It fulfills all the criterias of a controller. There is no real latency, the buttons feel nice to press with good feedback and it can be used wirelessly (although I have only been using it as a wired controller)
The only real criticism of psp as a controller is when you are using it to play a game that requires way too many buttons. PSP has quite a limited set of buttons by today's standards.

And I guess it requires custom firmware too but like who doesnt already have custom firmware on their psp in 2021.

The other use of psp for me is to use it to run psp games and output the screen on a laptop monitor instead.
I mean yeah you can just use PPSSPP too but some games are a joy to play on actual hardware instead.
