Omni's got it right. Nothing matters but whether you're feeling more like sore loser young master or training arc for the next chapter.

But on a more serious note, this entirely depends on the respective skills. Experience has diminishing returns as more and more falls into "things you can beat with what you have".

The author's power of plot is too strong!

Skills.

Conditions to consider before giving battle (based on history):

1) Troop conditions (like training, sleep, hunger factor, tehcnical knowledge on their equipment)
2) Terrain (soil conditions, elevations, concealed areas)
3) Weather (rain, foggy weather, etc.)
4) Quality of equipment (maintenance, numbers, quality)

5) Also, political will of the leaders (government and military; there's such thing as the 'fifth column')

Or are we talking of an individual battle? In that case, experience and skills wins the game. Experience without skills will get you killed, and the same with talents without proper training/experience.

Whichever character can use their charm to talk no jutsu the enemy into friendship or offing themselves.
