Quest Report - Okarin

Okarin needed to be stronger. They knew that.

If they wanted to be able to chase Vicious... Okarin needed to be much, much stronger.

But how...?

The slime person was pensive as they sat in the little shack that the Liberi had made for them. Absentmindedly, they were absorbing brightweed on the ground through their skin. The past month or so, Okarin had eaten almost nothing but healing herbs and developed a healing property, but somehow it felt like their improvement was too slow.

Their healing slime wasn't even that great of an ability. It took hours for Okarin to heal a single injury in a temple, whereas an ordinary healing potion could take minutes. No matter how Okarin looked at it, they were inferior.

+ + +

Okarin held a flyer from the guild in their hand.

This was an Alchemist's Assistant quest.

Would it be possible for them to learn how to make potions? Perhaps Okarin could take their own healing slime and make it into a stronger potion?

Although...

The slime person stared at the quest requirements.

—5 slime cores.

Okarin felt a chill even thinking about it.

Wasn't it basically like saying that healing a person depends on the lives of slimes?

It was quite a dark way of thinking about it.

Kill one person to heal another.

+ + +

Okarin ended up spending a day walking around the city looking for an apothecary who would be willing to accept them as a student even though Okarin didn't bring any Slime Cores. Unfortunately, most places rejected Okarin, saying that the Slime Core payment was essential. Okarin even tried offering the Healing Jelly that they secreted, but most of the alchemists were flatly disinterested.

It was close to the evening when Okarin was walking back to North Scribel Forest.

They noticed a shack on the edge of the forest with a small chimney. There was a small stack of smoke rising, which was why they noticed it in the first place.

Was that always there?

For no real reason, Okarin started walking towards the shack. They knocked on the door.

A witch with a wide-brimmed hat answered the door.

"What do you want?" The witch complained grouchily.

"Are you looking for an assistant? I'd like to learn how to make potions." Okarin responded.

"Why don't you go to one of the Alchemists in the city?" She asked.

"I don't want to collect Slime Cores," Okarin explained simply.

The witch narrowed her eyes and squinted at them.

"Hm, I see. You are a slime, I suppose."

Okarin blinked a few times. The witch saw through their human form? Okarin had gotten pretty good at shapeshifting, and ordinarily Okarin thought that they had a fairly convincing human form. None of the alchemists that Okarin visited earlier in the day had even noticed that they were in fact a slime. Most people thought Okarin was an ordinary human.

"I'll accept you as my student if you give me your slime core."

"I can't do that," Okarin answered. "I'll die without my slime core."

The witch snickered and laughed.

"The Law of Equivalent Exchange. Have you ever heard of it? If you desire something enormous, you must pay the equivalent price."

"Why does it have to be my slime core in particular? Shouldn't any slime core be fine?"

"Okarin, my dear. You're terribly mistaken. It has to be your slime core and no one else's. Otherwise it wouldn't work. Say, do you know the answer to 1 + 1 ?"

"Two?"

"Oh my goodness, it seems you've been corrupted by by those silly human 'scientists' already. You'll never be able to comprehend my magic if you're so stubbornly attached to the illusion of rationality and reality. Every one is different. Adding one to another one certainly does not make two. At best, you end up with merely two entirely different ones, but they certainly cannot be combined. It is a mistake to assume that two ones are the same."

"Huh?"

The puns and word-play was confusing.

"Do you believe in the Law of Threes? Death flags? Deus Ex Machina? Plot armor? Star-Crossed Lovers? Reincarnated as a Villainess?"

"I'm... not sure what you're talking about...?"

"Science is meaningless in this world, dear. Even those silly magic systems that pretend to be science. The only thing that matters is the Story, and whether you stay on the right side of the Story. I am a Stitch Witch, and my craft is the fabric of Fate and Stories itself."

The haggard woman began cackling maniacally like a third-rate villain.

"...Okay."

Okarin sounded skeptical. They were positive that the witch was insane.

"But can you teach me to make potions?"

+ + +

A full 24 hours later, Okarin knocked on the witch's door again.

They were huffing and puffing and covered with twigs and leaves.

"I brought you sour milk and a datura, just like you asked," Okarin said.

The witch was chewing on an ice popsicle and fiddling with some kind of metallic device when she opened the door.

Finding the datura, by the way, was a huge pain. Okarin had no idea what it was, until they walked around the city and visited several apothecaries. A kind person told Okarin that it was a poisonous flower sometimes known as Devil's Trumpet or a Moonflower. Since Moonflower sounded a lot like Moonlight Water, Okarin thought they might be able to find it in a similar place. Okarin hired an adventurer for 30G to help them find the Moonlight Lake, and they spent a full day searching the bushes beside the lake for a weird flower despite the chagrin of the adventurer who thought it was a useless endeavor.

Miraculously, Okarin seemed to discover a small patch of the flowers right before sunset as the moon started rising above the horizon.

"Good work." The witch said. "Would you like another lecture on Denouement and Dramatic Irony?"

Okarin hastily interrupted the witch before she could start rambling jibberish again.

"Um, you're going to teach me how to make potions, right?"

The witch lazily responded that Okarin was already slowly learning it, and there was nothing else to teach today.

"???"

"Come back another day," the witch said. "I'm going to go watch Tee-Vee. You're bothering me."

Okarin had no idea what this mysterious Tee-Vee thing was.

"Um, excuse me." They asked another question. "Has your cottage always been here? I never really noticed it until recently."

"Of course not," the witch said. "That's a ridiculous question."

She explained that the cottage is only here when it feels like being here.

Otherwise, it isn't here.

:blob_dizzy::blob_dizzy::blob_dizzy:

The witch bid Okarin a good evening, and then shut the door.

+ + +

As Okarin started walking away, it suddenly occurred to them that they never asked for the witch's name.

How strange of them to forget such basic manners?!

When the slime person turned around to glance at the cottage at the edge of the forest...

...it was gone.

Vanished into thin air.

Almost like it was never there to begin with.

After a week of rest and recover, I finally felt good enough to go on quests again, it took me longer than I expected to heal my broken ribs... Perhaps because I took too long to start treating them, or maybe because I overestimated how much I could do at my current state.

Regardless, I already knew what quest I wanted to take, so I grabbed it and went to the meeting point with the civilians.

The people in question that needed guidance were a group of alchemists that did not want to pay the cost of Moonlight Water to the guild, so they instead decided to fetch it themselves while hiring an adventurer as an escort... I had to wonder why the guild deemed this goal as acceptable when the quest to recover the Moonlight Water is of level 4 while this quest is of level 3, but I suppose it's not an issue for as long as the guild approves it.

I met with the alchemist group near dusk and we departed in one of their wagons... During the travel, I prayed to The Goddess for a safe voyage and we found no issues. Once we reached the forest, we got out of the wagon and started moving on our feet. Though I put up a protective barrier around the wagon and its horses with my talismans, just in case.

They already knew the location of the Moonlight Spring as this was not the first time they hired someone to help them, so I did not have to worry about searching for it. I just had to follow their lead while praying to The Goddess for protection.

When the moon was near its zenith, we reached the spring and they filled multiple bottles with the water, and then we started leaving. The path back was also very safe and we reached the wagon without problems.

On the way back, they seemed to be surprised by how there had been no issues at all, and commented that they usually found dangers either on the way to the forest or near the spring itself... To that, I just explained to them that The Goddess protects us, and she guided us through a safe path.

By the time we reached the guild, it was near dawn. They gave me a small note that signaled they were content with my escort, and then I returned to the guild to deliver it.

Quest Report - Nestel

Lucian was bleeding. He was unconscious.

Nestel's head throbbed and his ears continued to ring as he dragged his master through the Gate. He could still hear the gun shots and the explosions echoing through his skull. Someone had fired a tactical missile into the mansion. There was shattered glass everywhere the gas pipes were exploding in a fiery inferno.

Those bastards had really gone all out.

Nestel had been one of the lucky ones. The mansion was strewn with dead bodies and torn limbs — the other servants weren't so fortunate to be doing chores in the basement at the time of the attack. It was almost miraculous that Master Lucian made into the basement in time to activate the Gate in the first place, and Nestel had been coincidentally nearby. The ceiling was already collapsing around them, and if the man had been seconds later, they would have been crushed by the flaming debris.

The neko collapsed at the steps right in front of the Otherworld Gate. There was a pool of blood where he had dragged his human master.

Nestel was too exhausted to even think about where they were. Frankly, he was just thankful to be alive.

He closed his eyes for less than a second, but then realized there were pedestrians staring at him.

+ + +

A crowd of... many different kinds of people were congregating around them at the gate.

This was a... city... of some kind? A medieval one, by the looks of it?

Nestel was suddenly self-conscious about the crowd. He inched closer to his owner and reflexively grabbed Master Lucian's unconscious hand — which was bizarre given what kind of dysfunctional relationship they had — but Nestel was in an unfamiliar setting. The neko instinctively turned towards the only familiar object in this environment, which was Master Lucian.

For a split second, Nestel was filled with paranoia.

Were these people enemies?

Would they also try to kill them?

However, Nestel's sensitive ears soon enough picked up the whispers among the crowd. They weren't hostile, but...

The neko looked down at his white shirt. It was soaked through with blood, and his hands were dripping with sanguine fluid. There were splatters of blood all over Nestel's body, and he could taste iron on his lips. There was a large puddle of blood that was rapidly increasing in size, and his thigh stockings were soaking it up like a hungry plant thirsty for water.

A puddle of blood. Growing bigger. It wasn't his own blood.

With a panicked realization, Nestel spun around and fumbled around to check his Master.

No... No!

Nestel couldn't live without his Master.

If Master died... it would be catastrophic. A nightmare!

He pulled aside the thirty-year-old human man's bloody cardigan and clawed at the fabric on Master Lucian's chest. The clothes were in the way. They were wet rags that were soaked and saturated with clots and stringy mucous that Nestel didn't understand. However, despite what little the neko knew, Nestel could tell it was bad. The man was rapidly losing blood.

The cat demihuman looked up with a panicked look in his eyes.

The crowd was unmoving.

"Help!" He cried out, unsure if anyone could understand him. "Somebody, please help!"

+ + +

Several hours later, Nestel was kneeling outside of the entrance of the main city temple.

Anxious.

Fretful.

They had taken Master Lucian into the temple, and Nestel wasn't allowed to go inside while they were doing the magic surgery. He still hadn't changed out the blood-soaked shirt and smock. He was thirsty and needed to go to the bathroom, but the neko didn't want to walk away for a single second.

He was terrified.

He had a deeply complicated and problematic relationship with Master Lucian... yet... he couldn't lose him.

There was nothing more terrifying in the entire world than losing his master... his alpha.

The door to the temple suddenly opened, and one of the priests slowly stepped out.

"Good news. Your... friend... is in stable condition."

Friend.

Nestel almost choked at the poor choice of words. Friends? No, they weren't friends. Not even close. Master Lucian was cold, cruel, and unfair, and he didn't even care about Nestel in the slightest. Master Lucian had many omegas, husbands, and wives, and Nestel was only one of the lesser ones who spent most of his time dusting the cabinets and arranging the inventory in the basement. After Master Lucian had purchased him from the Omega Kennels, he hardly paid Nestel any attention beyond the bare minimum obligatory parts.

Nonetheless, Nestel was pair-bonded to Master Lucian, and they were in fact married. There were certain aspects of Nestel's biology that were unavoidable. In the world that Nestel came from, Omega's bonded once with a partner and for a lifetime. Divorce was biologically impossible.

"T-That's... good news..." Nestel struggled to respond with a weak smile. "And um... he's my husband."

The priest paused for a moment and lifted his glasses, giving the male neko a once-over stare.

However, the priest coughed nonetheless and continued talking:

"I heard you just came through the gate. I don't know where you came from, but you should register with the Adventurer's Guild. Hopefully, you'll find a new future there."

It had been so long since he had to do a night watch. It reminded him of those days where he had to run against the templar of the church. It was so easy back then, to shed their blood as he took their life. Yet, how many of those he killed, surfaced in his mind?

The sword is heavy. It is heavy, not because of the metal that made it. It is heavy because the weight of a life is heavy.

Yet he had no other choice. Young, old, how many were slain by his sword? He had no other choice. Even if he would be reminded of those faces until his dying breath, he had made peace with his choice. The lives he had taken was his sin, and he would bear it.

He stopped his musing, as he noticed a movement in the distance. It was a distance where he couldn't discern the figure, beyond that it was humanoid. He waited, preparing to sound the alarm bell if needed. The figure moved toward the city, to the west gate under him.

As time passed, the figure got closer. Close enough that his body was illuminated by the torch attached beside the gate. By its appearance, the figure was a traveler, or adventurer. Though, he might be wrong about his judgment. From atop of the gate, he spoke.

"Halt, traveler. State your name and purpose."

"Edward. I am an adventurer. I am returning after doing a quest in Asteria Village."

"Please wait for a guard to check upon you."

He rang the bell twice. Not long after that, the sound of the groaning wood could be heard, as the gate opened. From his vantage point, the adventurer was then approached by a city guard, where he showed the guard his adventurer license.

The guard then returned the license to the adventurer, and they both entered through the gate. Ramza then continued his guard duty.

Since then, he saw nothing else. As the dawn came, a guard came from the trapdoor, saying that he had been relieved from night duty.

Report - Solet' Luna
Because I needed to travel west soon anyway, I decided to go and check out the path towards the village, and after looking through quests, the Crossroad Tavern attracted my attention. Without even having to do anything, I could feel that the Tavern there was special.

The journey towards the crisscross was peaceful, as in no harm was done to me. Although there were monsters and bandits, all of them had gone on their way to greet Deaths for me. They were too weak and insignificant.

Standing before me was the abovementioned Crossroads Tavern. Its outer appearance was a simple wooden structure, almost resembling any ordinary taverns I saw all the time. However, it was as if a layer of the thin membrane was covering it, so thin that I could not detect it, but gave it a feeling of the otherworldliness.

With a gentle pushed, the gate went ajar, and a cool breeze ran past me. The inner place of the Tavern, although still wooden-like in appearance, had a luxury air lingered in it. The dimly-lit candle chandeliers emitted soft fragrance, relaxing the atmosphere while still keeping the vibe professional and clean.

The place was unexpectedly neat, and without any hint of decay. It felt more like a jewel store, more than a tavern.

"Customer, welcome to the Crossroads Tavern. How may I help you?" A voice, soft and sweet, echoed into my ears. In the background, faint music was playing, and its rhythm, steady and melodious, created a sense of harmony and tranquillity.

"I heard that you sell things, and I come here to see what kind of goods you sell." I asked her while observing her appearance. The lady in front of me was a pure-human, or so her outer appearance resembled. Her face, always smiling, revealed nothing of significance.

"Ah— yes, customer. In here, we sell everything... Please have a seat and take your time." After asking for my order, the lady walked back to prepare the drink and let me look around.

On various shelves and picture frames, countless exotic items were displayed without any care. I could tell that, most of them, even without further inspection, were expensive and valuable. There were even some kinds of treasures that Luna had never seen before, and they possessed a supernatural quality that she was intrigued in.

After a while, the lady returned with two drinks. One for me, the creamy tea, and other, contained in some kind of grail-like transparent glass, was an exotic drink that I had never seen before. Its smell resembled a field of various fruits, and its colour, bright red at the top, then shifting to orange at the bottom, was a fascinating sight to behold.

"Customer, this is Fruit Cocktail, a special drink we had. Would you like to take a sample?" As if knowing my answer beforehand, the lady took out a shot glass, decorated in a plain design, but still remained fancy in its vibe. She poured me a little of the Fruit Cocktail, and I tasted it.

I was surprised at its taste, as the sensation was akin to a needle pinching my tongue. It was sweet, and sour, but the two happened at the same time, then dispersed leaving a strange after-taste that made me carved for more. Although there was so little alcohol in it, the burning was also kind of enhanced by the exotic combination of taste and fragrance.

"You say that this place sells everything, is that true? If say, I wish to obtain a dragon scale, would you be able to get it for me?" Feeling curious, Luna decided to ask to confirm the statement, after all, that Fruit Cocktail had demonstrated that the shop was no ordinary place, not to mention the treasures displayed on the shelves.

"Of course, we could get them for you, as many as you like. However, would you be able to pay for it?" Sipping her drink, the lady smiled and looked at me with a playful expression.

"I have wealth, relics, and mountains of gems, are these enough?" Dropping a bag on the table, I unfolded its seal to reveal various clear, transparent gemstones. Most of them, the treasures from Misty Puppeteer and Poisonous Rustler, were enough to buy several men's lives.

"... Customer, even if you have an ocean of gemstones, it would amount to nothing. We received no ordinary current, but a special one. These gems mean nothing to you, so they mean nothing to us, too." Placing her hand onto the table, and lifting it up, a pale, blue piece of reflective surface appeared on the table. I immediately knew that it was an authentic dragon scale, judging from its ancient and majestic aura.

"Then, what's the price?" If I could get my hand on the dragon scale, then it would be for the best.

"How about, a drop of your Elemental Blood for this thousand-years-old scale?" Sadly, the price was too much, for my Elemental Blood, was akin to the cumulative hard-work of my sorcery for tens of years. Each of them could re-create me from the stretch, as long as my soul was intact, and a hint of my body remained. I merely have two drops, which was already amazing.

"What about information? Could you tell me more about the Holy Human Empire, specifically Court Kalbius Malkeyer?" Going to more abstract request, I wished to test the limit of the Tavern.

"Customer, seeing that you are such an eager one, I would give you a free little information about them. The Empire is but one of the many powerhouses of this continent, and their actions are not of a mindless massacre. For your Adventurer Guild to think that they are the overlord of Tonia, it is no surprise. After all, the Mainland is indeed far bigger and wider than the countryside's person to imagine." Never have I once mentioned the plan of the Adventurer Guild, but the lady spoke as if it was no secret. Her words made me realised that there were many more things that existed above my current understanding of the world.

Knowing that I could never afford the price to know everything, I bid farewell to the lady and exited the Tavern.

"Customer, please take this card. If you wished to meet us, then we shall appear before you. I'm eagerly waiting for that moment." Warmly gifting me the business card and escorting me out, the lady closed the door, and I entered back into the normal world.

Quest Report - Not Yet Appraised

"Miss Luna, you found a tavern that seemed to cross the boundaries between planes? That is... Quite unusual, especially because it seems quite conflicting to what miss (?) Okarin provided us with.

"Perhaps there are certain requirements to finding the part of the tavern that you found and miss (?) Okarin did not? I do not think it was the lack of valuable things, since this tavern seemed to care only about what is precious to you, which is something miss (?) Okarin certainly has.

"It seems like more information is needed on this matter... Nonetheless, the information you obtained was much appreciated.

"And... I'm glad to see you safe, miss Luna. Your actions at Spire Reef worried me, it's good that you came back alive, I pray you remain like so.

"May the gods give you insight on that which you seek to know."

It was somewhat troublesome that this task has been up for this long yet nobody took it so far... I wasn't sure what would be the best way to go about it, but it would be a good idea to investigate... For now, I suppose the best way would be to go after the obvious suspect that is most likely being framed.

As soon as I took the quest, I immediately went to talk to one of the receptionists that seemed to be free at the moment, "Excuse me, are you miss Imelda?"

The white haired half-elf seemed to be bothered by my question and replied haughtily, "Who's asking!? Don't tell me you're another of those ***** that want to complain about me getting closer to men that obviously care a lot more for me!"

Her reply was disheartening, while I am not officially hired to work with the guild, I have done my fair share of work appraising reports, I hoped she already remembered me and that she'd understand my question was just a cordiality to inform her I had official business with her... I prayed she'd become more aware of the people near her, but for now, I need to clear her misunderstanding.

With this in mind, I replied, "No, miss Imelda. My name is Nene, I'm a priestess of The Goddess and an adventurer currently at the guild's employment. I'm here because you have been accused of stealing tax payments from law-abiding citizens by bewitching them with your looks."

She seemed astonished and furious at my statement. Understandably so since she is most likely innocent, but I required this approach for her to understand the seriousness of the situation... It was a pity, I'd rather avoid unnecessary commotions. At the moment though, it was impossible to do so, as she started shouting, "Me!? Stealing!? Are you mad, you *****!? Do you even understand who you are talking to? I'll have you know that-"

As she seemed about to continue going off for quite a while, I decided to do the rude action of cutting her off, Goddess forgive me. "The accusation does not come from me, miss Imelda. I am here merely relaying a message, and perhaps, if you have any information worth sharing, obtaining directions." She stopped shouting and started listening attentively, so I continued. "The culprit in question was referred to as a beautiful blond half-elf with an alluring body and that does obscene acts with men before taking their tax money while pretending to work for the guild.

"There are two very important things absent from her descriptions though... Any specific details of her body, like eye colors, average height or pretty much anything that wasn't related to hair color and sexual characteristics... And her name.

"While you yourself have white hair instead of blond hair, it is very easy to pin the accusations upon you as it shouldn't be too hard to change that feature... And your personality and overall behavior seem to match to the culprit to some extent." She seemed offended by this statement, but she did not deny it, so I continued. "However, I currently do not believe you are the person that has caused these issues, for you would have most likely been caught by your coworkers if you just so happened to have visited this many people that had trouble paying their taxes."

My last comment seems to have thrown her off guard, so she asked confusedly, "Well, what do you want of me then?"

I looked deeply into her eyes before replying, "Two things. First, alibis. Considering your work does not revolve around tax collection, and how you are often surrounded with people, you should probably have an easy time proving your innocence as you weren't around in the moments the money was stolen. I want the exact details and witnesses.

"As for the second thing, I want a list of every half-elf woman in the city that you know of, separated into four categories:
  • Hates you and knows magic.
  • Hates you, but doesn't know magic.
  • Doesn't hate you, but knows magic.
  • Doesn't hate you and doesn't know magic.
"I also want each of them to have a basic description of their body features and your personal opinion on rather or not they can or cannot be the culprit." She seemed to be quite annoyed by my demands and about to talk back to me, so I spoke first. "And miss Imelda, a reminder... You're currently the biggest suspect in the list.

"Help me help you prove your innocence. I need that evidence... May the gods help your day improve." I finished, and then got up and turned around without waiting for her reply.

By the end of miss Imelda's shift, I visited her again and asked if she got what I asked done... And she did, which probably means she skipped on work to do this, but I suppose it is for the best that I don't comment on that.

Instead, I quickly glanced over the alibis and saw that they all made sense, and they also had names of people that could serve as witnesses... That's a nice start. I thanked The Goddess for her help in this first part.

And the next one was the list of names I asked for... There were quite a few names there, we should be able to get something from that. I thanked her for her aid and left... This is all I can do for now though, for I'm unable to investigate those people myself.

With this information, I filled a report to the guild.
  • Talked to Imelda Carson about the issue in the quest as her features matched the half-elf in question for the most part.
  • Got alibis that seemed to proved her innocence.
  • Got an organized list of possible suspects that might have acted in this way to obtain the money and to frame miss Imelda.
  • Delivered the report at this point as I'm unable to do the direct investigation with each possible culprit.

Today Zorion again collected slime cores and healing herbs for learning alchemy. His fishing spear punctured slimes and tore out cores in a disgustingly nonchalant manner. As cores and healing herbs were gathered he contemplated how he could learn alchemy better.

As he looked upon the materials he collected, he started to chew on the words in the quest descriptor, "We can use that to brew a weak healing potion."

The thought nestled in his mind, and he collected much more cores and herbs than he needed to give to the alchemist guild.

I arrived in the guild with my payment ready, again, I was sent to fetch materials from the markets, the stern alchemist's name I now know as Hybrook was once more the person I assisted.

Fortunately, he was to brew a potion of madness once more, just as last time. To this time too, I purchased six sets of ingredients instead of five, leaving one for me to use to learn. Hybrook saw the extra set when I gave him the ingredients but he just snickered once and said no thing.

The stern alchemist went to brew, without so much as a word of thanks, but unlike the time prior, I did not observe his craft. I found a quiet corner and again reviewed the books on the foundation of alchemy.

With the books in the brewing lab, I refreshed myself about the names of procedures, techniques, style of decanting, but ultimately there a was a part that eluded me, the thing called the heart of alchemy, and rhythm of essences. The book speak of it as if it was the very core of brewing, something and alchemist listened for.

If I asked Hybrook to give me a hint, to tell me what I have to listen for when brewing, I wondered if he would tell me. But I found that prospect doubtful. I did not give up however, I found another book, one with an index of known methods of brewing a weak healing potions.

However, there were innumerable methods almost as if everyone had their own way of doing it. 'what does this mean? Aren't alchemy a systematic method? Isn't it of precision and procedures? How can there be so many methods to do the same thing?'

Getting up from my seat, I approached a brewing station, I randomly choose a formula for making a weak healing potion and went to work. The drying to the twin flowers, and grinding it in to a fine powder was straight forward. The core was also grounded into a fine powder, two powders were placed in a cauldron of clean water and boiled until it turned red.

But it never did, what did I do wrong?

I sieved through the liquid, I stirred and rubbed it in my fingers, but nothing. it was not a healing potion, however something was there, faint as it may be, perhaps it was my innate Triton's affinity with water. It was the seem feeling I felt from the glowstones and moonlight water. There was something in the water, but that somthing was simply not mixing properly.

I looked around the alchemy brewing lab, watched other alchemists, I notices a small detail out of place, occasionally, alchemist would stop and stare that the mixture almost as if looking for something. Previously I had dismissed it as something alchemist do for the sake of timing.,

What if there is something else to it?

Again he made more powder and boiled the mixture, leaning in i placed a hand on the rim of the cauldron, on the bar handle that was there. Strangely, a familiar feeling, it was like ny Triton ability only it was amplified, I could feel the flows of elements in the boiling liquid.

It was not mana, not magic, it was like life, essences moving and crashing into each other trying to form.... something. With a mere thought, the essences moved according to my will. Patterns, clumps of particles took shape, the shape came naturally as the essence of slime cores and twin flower formed a stable structure. Once formed the structure devoured the heat of the fire and the liquid bloomed the colour red.

Holding the vial of red weak healing potion, I shook it and it glimmered slightly, instinctively I knew it was a success, still I made a small cut on a finger and quaffed the liquid as a test.

Success. The cut closed up quickly.

I needed the momentum, I keep brewing as the sensation of controlling the alchemical essences were carved in to my bones. And when i reach a point to seek higher accomplishment I powered through.

I took a deep breath and started to brew the potion of madness. The prospect of testing it was troubling, but I would have to cross that bridge when I successfully make the potion.

The Jade Rosemary, the Summer Cassia, the unholy water all were processed and just like the last time and I dropped them into a cauldron over the fire. I moulded composed the essences and when the potion's core was forming, I added Monk's Mallow and Golden Clary.

A purple plum of smoke flowed out of the cauldron, the essences were becoming a layered entity can't be seen by the naked eye. As the heat receded cracks appeared the clumps of activators in the essences threatening to disintegrate what made the potion work. I quickly mixed in the Moon Creeper. and the "form" of the potion stabilized.

The potion of madness was completed, so consumed with the brewing process, I didn't notice Hybrook and a few alchemist watching me work. The vial of the potion was in my hand. It was a purple liquid that looked most sinister.

The moment of truth, I quickly brought the potion to my lips-

"Stop!" is was Hybrook, "You are going to be an alchemist aren't you? Then you should test your potion like one, apprentice."

He motioned to a small device, it looked like a stone dish with a small gem on the rim. "Go on"

I pour a drop of my potion into the device, and just as the cauldron that shoowed the moment of the essences boiling within, the dish showed be the effect the potion contained.

The madness, I could see the effect of madness within, the potion was a success.

Hybrook nodded and gave me a note detailing the completion of my task. The note did not document my acheviment only I complete the task of delivering the ingredients, but thinking Hybrook and the alchemists there knew what I had become.

Although, I was not an alchemist in name nor was one by association, I was an alchemist apprentice in skill at least.

And for now that is enough

  • Collected more herbs and and cores than needed
  • ran errand with shopping list
  • learned from books
  • Tried to make weak healing potion
  • Tried to make potion of madness
  • gained some recognition in skill

"Cake I wonder what exactly that is the only quote I can remember was something like, Let them eat cake. I also remember that person having there head cut off for some reason around that statement so probably not something I'd actually want." I seem to have muttered out loud someone looked weirdly at that after but time for me to go and do some border patrolling I guess maybe I'll come across something interesting out there. I grabbed it signed off with a receptionist who gave me a little wooden badge and told me to hand it over to the city guard barrack head and then I headed off to the barracks. Along the way the pyrovore woke up and tried to munch on my neck again so I dropped it into the backpack so it could eat some slime a minor annoyance I'd have to get it more food soon.

Arriving at the barracks I showed the little badge to the man at the gate and he waved me in. Surprising that there is only one guard there but maybe the other just went for a toilet break or something or maybe they just have that little staff. The time currently was still a little before first light about 10 minutes and 34 seconds by my predictions so I needed to join up with the group fast after all they would likely head out at first light and not return until after dark. I arrived at the point where I had been directed by the gates guard with 10 minutes and 3 seconds to spare. I quickly knocked on the door. "Come in but do mind the mess a bit."
I rapidly opened the door, shut it behind me and then pulled out the badge, "AIEO reporting for patrol duty." I threw the man a salute even though I really couldn't give a crap about him the clock was ticking so these perfunctory actions were required.
"Ah the one who was troublesome in the training excercise... I doubted you'd even take a quest like this. Anyway grab the badge with a 1 star on it and throw me that one. I'm behind the paperwork so just lob it over it and please don't collapse it."
"Roger." I quickly throw the badge over the paperwork and retrieved the lonely 1st star badge sitting on his desk. Then I had to ask where I was supposed to meet them. "Where do I meet them sir? Have yet to be told that."
I hear a heavy sigh from the other side of the stacked paperwork there where piles of it all throughout the room creating a sort of enclosure that locked this man into the dark. "Just exit and go left there should be a flag sitting there."
"Thanks." I quickly exited the room and the skulls clacked as I rapidly turned around. 9 minutes left that conversation took to long.

I wandered through the base for a bit 8 minutes left till departure time. Finding the flag I saw what looked for the most part a rag tag bunch of lunatics. It seemed I'd fit in fine. I quickly joined them and flashed the badge the others nodded and grinned I did not like that but oh well. Now you may ask why there were groups if we were to patrol the borders I'd assume it's because there are many threats out there that an indiviudal will find it hard to deal with. Like say a small horde of spiders comes trundling through most individuals will find it hard to deal with a large group of spiders and delay them all. So they have a large group of people do the patrolling so that enemies can be delayed longer whilst the "captain" summons others with his horn. As the timer ticked down I made sure to familiarise myself with this hodge podge group of "people". I don't care enough to analyse them further than that I have enough information to digest at this point. 3 minutes till leaving time at latest. There were about 10 of us in the group a little larger than I thought it might be but with the hodge podge look maybe that's the reason. The man with the horn picks up the flag and begins to inhale. "MOVE OUT." Explodes from his mouth and then he quickly starts jogging towards the Western gate which would take about 3 minutes in all to reach.

We went out through the western gate just as the sun rose. It seems he was being extremely punctual for some reason who knows why. We quickly opened up the gate and gate guards rushed to get to their positions no wonder he was being so punctual. He didn't want to annoy people by not showing up to the gate on time. After filling out he pointed at 5 guys and told them to head off to the west. One of the five had a horn on himself likely the vice captain of the group. The next action that was taken was the man signalling the rest of us off the other way down.

The first threat we encountered was that of a group of snow fiends that had decided to pay us a visit and had somehow gotten into an argument with a fire fiend. All of them disgusting xenos or maybe daemons not to show I hoped they would get into a fight but they didn't so those abominations would continue on living. They stopped arguing as soon as they saw us the snow fiends where directed to head to the Northern gate for some reason though and the fire was told to head on over to the gate. He was a nuisance and an annoyance where he was as he could start a fire at any time.

The next group was more a suspicious group than an actual threat they where wheeling around a giant contraption with a bell hanging on it. The group was completely cloaked themselves though I saw a small little bit of fur hanging out. "I'll deal with this myself you guys continue on I'll catch up." The smell that wafted from the group smelt like how the Skaven did and the weapon did look a little like something that the Skaven had crafted for their own defence. Though I don't know what point the giant bell would have. We continued on as things where.

The boss soon caught up to us and said that he'd directed the group into the city via the south entrance which were the biggest gates it seems. Anyway I wonder what that was all about? What exactly could it have been about someone else would almost assuredly tell me about it later on after all that's why I had money that I set aside separately from the money that I'd be using to pay off my debt for information gathering purposes. In the period of time that the captain had been away we didn't meet anyone who was to much of a threat just people admiring the wall or other such stuff really and nothing untoward happened.

After he rejoined us we quickly reached the corner and did an about turn heading back down the wall this patrol was actually quite an annoyance to do to much walking but a small price to pay for the monitoring of the wall and noticing all these interesting people who like to hang around the wall. We came across about 10 slimes who had decided to try and climb the wall. "Okay guys line up and take them down on my mark." Every guard pulled out some form of ranged weaponry and I loaded the crossbow, "Fire, reload" I quickly fired the shot off into the slime furthest to the left and smashed the core out of the thing with the blunt bolt. It's good that I got a few more slime corpses, I was quickly reloading whilst having that thought. The pyrovore began to climb out of the bag on my shoulder. We were all ready to fire again. "FIRE." We fired off the shoots sadly this meant that I now had another blunted bolt. The thing had bounced off the wall after nudging the core out of the slime. The commander said to clean the mess up so I quickly moved over and put 2 of the slimes into my backpack for the pyrovore to eat so it could continue to grow and evolve it's fire cannon.

A while later we saw a small group of goblins the commander had us get into position to fire upon the goblins again there were of course only five. So we lined up to fire on them again. The commander readied himself for the yelling this was getting to be quite a repetitive task at this point we'd likely be doing this all day an annoyance that would it appears continue to be the case. Anyway this was fine I got to see the wall and the expertise of the guards which was high enough for me to care about this. "Retrieve items." I quickly rushed over to collect my bolt which had snapped damnit. Only 19 sharp bolts left now it seemed.

The rest of the day was, "All quiet on the Western front". All quiet I say but well we did run into a few other groups that were annoying but I luckily did not have to deal with any of them for the most part they where fucking xenos that never seemed to get along like a Skaven and a dwarf that almost started a fight on the road there but I wasn't involved in any of these proceedings. There was a struggling merchant caravan with a caravan that had new burn markings that appeared upon it as if it had recently been through a major battle and used as a defensive bunker. Anyway that would likely be posted in to the guild for a report which could be fun to deal with bandits and massacre them all or whatever exactly had stolen the things that these merchants had lost.

The pyrovore seems to have grown an extremely small amount from it's eating maybe it's just the gobbet of acid has been completely reset or something or it gained a little bit of weight maybe I need to feed it less slimes oh well. We returned through the gate shutting it behind us at the exact moment the sun had gone down behind the horizon and slowly made our way back to the barracks where we'd be dismissed it seemed.

At the barracks the barrack chieftain came out collected the badges from the adventurers and handed back the original wooden ones and dismissed us to return back to the guild so of course I bolted off as soon as I was dismissed. I had no want to be here the calculations that I needed for something where almost complete and I needed to finish this off as fast as I could. It had to do with something important. Time since dismissal 1 minute 45 seconds when I arrived at the guild having rushed straight there. I handed the receptionist the badge filled in a small report and waited around to see if the receptionist had any questions regarding what exactly had happened just in case. As well as to update my mental maps from the maps that had been drawn up.
Started patrol at Western gate in a group labelled group 1.
Met abominable snow fiends and a fire fiend.
There was a weird group of things messing around with a bell on wheels the head of the patrol group dealt with them though. Probably Skaven from the smell and fur that I saw but other possibilities may exist.
Killed some slimes trying to enter the city with the guard group about 7/8's of the way up the gate.
Killed some goblins near the mid point of the wall.
Carriage with fire damage and no goods inside came past us.

Congratulations! :blob_party: Alchemy's a pretty useful skill in the field. - Alias

  • (Optional) Tell us about your epic adventures and life before Tonia!
Otherworlders, with your arrival, you have changed the current state of Scribel City. Although some citizens hated your presence, it was undeniable that you were the crucial part of this City. Without your help, we might never be able to expand our influence this fast and steady.

Recently, we, the Scribel Library, had been filling up our shelves with knowledge obtained from your hard work. We are eternally grateful for your effort. "It was hypothesized by scholars, that there was a civilization, older than mine, whose technology is beyond anything Ivalician can reproduce right now. In the city of machinist Goug, the source of discovery of those technologies, a massive ship had been rediscovered. While our scholar knows not about the inner working of those ship, they claimed that the ship can soar through the air."

Ramza looked at the librarian, currently in the process of scribing what he said. Waiting until the librarian continued, Ramza stood there.

It brought back memories. Of Mustadio, of the guns that could shot lightning, fire, ice. Put a wizard against chemist equipped with those guns, Ramza could guarantee that the chemist would be able to kill the wizard before he cast the first spell.

Was it a good thing, then? He wondered if the gun should be buried in history. Though, how many of those things, the wonder of ancient civilization would be discovered after this, he did not know. History of those things did not hold the same sense of wonder to him, compared to Mustadio and his father.

"Until now, we did not know what powered the ship at all. What made it float in the air, what made it move, we did not understand them. One thing that we knew, was that the wonder of old tied strongly to what we called a Zodiac Stone."

From the pouch of his robe, he clutched the blue stone inside. He did not know if Altima was truly vanquished. Thus, he brought the virgo stone with him everywhere. At least, with this the Lucavi wouldn't be able to finish their goals, if they was even alive after he had slain them. As for the remaining stone, he left most of those in the depth of the ocean. Hopefully they would linger there forever, undiscovered by mankind.

"The zodiac stone was a thing of wonder. How it brought machine alive, How it revived dead people, the people dead beyond the spell Arise. How it gave power, turning people into monsters in the war." He paused for a moment, taking a deep breath for what he'd be saying next. "Each stone contained behind them, power beyond man's understanding. I did not know if the zodiac stones were meant for man to wield. I saw it from myself, how the power of the stone shaped history."

Once again, he waited.

"Continuing our talk about the wonder of old, one thing that we knew for sure, was that it was impossible for just the stone to do it. One stone wouldn't certainly be enough for a whole city to be built, for numerous machine that filled Goug." He wondered if Mustadio were here, it wouldn't be as dry as what he told. How the man told him about those things during their intermission, the man may captivate the librarian in front of him. He was enraptured by Mustadio's tales, even if he did not understand anything. As construct 7 came alive, he held the silent wonder and respect over Mustadio's brilliance.

"So, there must have been something. Something in their inner working that made the machine of old work. The miracle of the stone was just a shortcut for them to manifest. The people that researched this made an assumption: if the source of power of the technology buried under goug be understood, if the mechanics of the machine could be understood and replicated, the stone would be unnecessary. The stone was, after all, something that granted a wish."
Appraised
I told something about my old world. The librarian can verify whether this is true or not.

Adsall was on a carriage, happily chatting with a nearby half-elf. He was riding with other people as well, but they were too shady for his taste.
He didn't know why, but it all just felt nostalgic. As they approached the City, Adsall felt... at home. He felt happy.

He quickly disembarked the carriage and walked to the Adventurer's Guild. It was strange, how he knew where it was. He greeted the receptionist, who looked at him weirdly. She gave him a form, before going back to play with her pen. Adsall quickly filled in the form and submitted it in, before quickly leaving.

He was hungry after all.
"Your name is... Adsall? Sorry, but it brings back memories... Such a strange coincidence..."

Adsall made his way towards the tavern, instinctively. As he opened the door, he was greeted with a wonderful smell of meat and booze.
He quickly ran inside, sat on a bar stool and ordered some mead and meat. He quickly scarfed it down, finishing with a satisfied burp.
He payed the 10G, which covered the room fees as well as other things, and decided to head up to his room.
"Alright. Since you've quoted the price of room and board in the tavern, I believe that you have found food. Do you by chance submitted the next quest? The one that require you to find a place to live?"

The first thing he had to do was to dry the meat. To do this, he cut the meat to thin strips, and put it over the fire using the oven. As the water vanished from the meat, he used knife to dice the meat, the mortar and pestle to ground it. He probably should dry the meat under the sun for a day, but he decided to use the oven.

After he finished grounding the meat, he added dried berries to it. The berries were grounded, too. Though he made sure that the berries were not as finely grounded to add texture to the final product. After this was done, he put both the meat and the berries to one bowl, and use his hand to mix it.

This was the last step. He needed to liquidify the fat. He first put the tallow into the oven to heat it. After it turned into liquid, he poured the liquid to the mixture. The amount of tallow he used for this process was as much as the meat, which was four cup of tallow. In ratio of 1:1, he mixed the tallow and the meat and berries mixture, and mix it.

After he finished mixing it, then he just need to spread it over in a pan. Thus, he took a pan, and spread the mixture. He just needed to wait overnight at this point, before he cut them into the forty pieces needed.

Thus, he waited. He wondered if he could take the quest three times, just to make 120 pieces of ration. Most of the time consumed in cooking this one was to wait for tomorrow, until it was ready to be cut. As for mixing them, it was not that time consuming. Also, it was an application of sufficient heat to leave the meat dried, which he thought was not that time consuming. Since he had so much free time right then, he decided to prepare another eighty batches, since the ration was long-lasting.

---

The next day came. He prepared with him the first batch of ration. At this point, he just need to cut them to forty pieces and he would get the required amount. Taking a knife, he started to cut the pemmican on the pan.

After cutting them to forty pieces, he took both the pan and the ration on it to the guild receptionist, submitting them.
evaluated
- Prepared three batches of forty pieces of ration. The first batch is submitted, while the second and third batch was ready to be cut and submitted.
