After finishing the submission of the first batch, Ramza returned to the quest board. He took the quest cooking ration once again, and returned to the kitchen.

The next thing he need to do was to cut the second batch, and submit it. He took the second pan of pemmican, and placed it on the countertop. Taking a knife from the knife holder, he held it on top of the pan, edge pointing to the ration.

He pushed it down. The blade of the knife started to cut the ration. As he felt that he touched the bottom of the pan, he then adjusted his grip. From the furthest part of the pan, he pulled the knife toward his body, trying to make the line as straight as possible.

After he reached the edge of the pan, he then started it again. This time, he prepared to make the cut to separate the second one fifth. Starting from the furthest edge, his knife sunk. Then, once again, he pulled it once again toward his body.

It continued until he separate them into five part. Then, the next part was to cut it horizontally, creating eight pieces each. This time, his hand took the position near the left edge. As he made sure the blade was located on the middle, he sank his blade, and pulled it toward the right side.

The ration was then split into two part, each part held five cut of the ration. Then, he made another cut, starting in the middle between the first horizontal cut and the top. After that was done, he made the third horizontal cut in the middle of the first horizontal cut and the bottom.

The next thing he needed to do was to split each of them into two part. Between the top and second cut, the second cut and first cut, first cut and third cut, and third cut and the bottom, he made another horizontal cuts. After he was done, he submitted the second batch.

Next would be the last. He thought to himself.

Taking the quest from the quest board, he returned to the kitchen once again. Once he arrived, he took the third pan, and place it on the countertop. With knife on his hand, he started to cut the ration.

After this, I should eat at the tavern. Bread and egg sound nice.

He finished cutting the ration, and submit it to the receptionist.

Adsall made his way towards the tavern, instinctively. As he opened the door, he was greeted with a wonderful smell of meat and booze.
He quickly ran inside, sat on a bar stool and ordered some mead and meat. He quickly scarfed it down, finishing with a satisfied burp.
He payed the 10G, which covered the room fees as well as other things, and decided to head up to his room.
"Alright. Since you've quoted the price of room and board in the tavern, I believe that you have found food. Do you by chance submitted the next quest? The one that require you to find a place to live?"

The first thing he had to do was to dry the meat. To do this, he cut the meat to thin strips, and put it over the fire using the oven. As the water vanished from the meat, he used knife to dice the meat, the mortar and pestle to ground it. He probably should dry the meat under the sun for a day, but he decided to use the oven.

After he finished grounding the meat, he added dried berries to it. The berries were grounded, too. Though he made sure that the berries were not as finely grounded to add texture to the final product. After this was done, he put both the meat and the berries to one bowl, and use his hand to mix it.

This was the last step. He needed to liquidify the fat. He first put the tallow into the oven to heat it. After it turned into liquid, he poured the liquid to the mixture. The amount of tallow he used for this process was as much as the meat, which was four cup of tallow. In ratio of 1:1, he mixed the tallow and the meat and berries mixture, and mix it.

After he finished mixing it, then he just need to spread it over in a pan. Thus, he took a pan, and spread the mixture. He just needed to wait overnight at this point, before he cut them into the forty pieces needed.

Thus, he waited. He wondered if he could take the quest three times, just to make 120 pieces of ration. Most of the time consumed in cooking this one was to wait for tomorrow, until it was ready to be cut. As for mixing them, it was not that time consuming. Also, it was an application of sufficient heat to leave the meat dried, which he thought was not that time consuming. Since he had so much free time right then, he decided to prepare another eighty batches, since the ration was long-lasting.

---

The next day came. He prepared with him the first batch of ration. At this point, he just need to cut them to forty pieces and he would get the required amount. Taking a knife, he started to cut the pemmican on the pan.

After cutting them to forty pieces, he took both the pan and the ration on it to the guild receptionist, submitting them.

As the third son of a noble, he was a stranger to paperwork. Sure, he could read and write just fine. Arithmetics was also no problem for him. But, it was his father and his eldest brother who did the paperwork for Beoulve territory. His brother, as a knight commander may have done some in his duty. But him? The closest thing he did to paperwork was when he entered the akademy.

Agrias, bless her soul, was the one taking care of the logistics. As he was on the run from the church for the whole time, Agrias was the one who did most of the shopping when they entered the city. It was not like he need to do paperwork himself, during the war.

Thus, it was his first time doing such. He was thankful of the woman, taking time to explain the logic behind what he had to that day. What he needed to do in the archives that day was to match the sighting of brigands around the scribel region in the quest report to the map, and sort it by date. Thus, he started his work.

Leafing through each report, he noted any sighting of brigands on the paper. The location and the date. Then, he placed the report on its own pile. After he finished sorting them, he placed those reports that did not contain any sighting on the left corner of the desk.

The next thing he did was to note the general location. Most of the adventurer's report has no specific location of the sighting. Landmarks could be noted here and there. But most of incident written was en route to the destination. Since the brigands target were caravan going to either asteria village or gelderholm, he looked at the map, noting the probable location based on their travel time if they go along the established route.

There, he found a concentration of attack in three day distance of going to Gelderholm. A brigand group repeatedly attack the caravan. Though, a lot of time they were repealed by the adventurer. He looked at the subjugation report that month, searching for any bandit subjugation mission there. As he found none, he made a note for it. Since last seen incident was nine days ago, though, he was wondering if the brigands were still there.

After he was done noting everything, he returned the report taken from the archives, and report it to the lady that supervised him. As that day's work was done, he went and submitted his quest report.
evaluated
- I have done a job in the archive, making a report of bandit sightings around scribel region.
- The bandit that attacked travelers going to gelderholm was mostly in number of tens to twenty. The location of bandit is estimated to be three days away from scribel, using caravan.
- The sighting of bandit near asteria village were inconclusive. Most target were merchant caravan. As for location, some of them said that they are attacked during the night on second day, and some of them said on the first day. Since the speed between each caravan varied, a few took two day, and most took three day journey, the estimated location of attack was provided, though I am not certain of its reliability.

It was a pity that he never paid attention to Luso when he fought. The kid made hunting monster like a work of art. When others attack those monsters, including him, they never paid attention except to whether it was dead or not yet. For Luso, though, he would carefully size the enemy, never harming the part sought by those poachers. The time he took to kill the monsters was no more than others, even.

The precision, the speed, the knowledge shown by each of his attack made him the one most sought when they need to hunt. While they spar, he would say that the boy was his equal, or perhaps even stronger. Other than him, the boy was the only one in the party who managed to learn ultima spell, too. He wondered what happened to him now. Would he found the friend he sought by now?

He found a deer, drinking on the river. As he confirmed the location of the deer, he prepared his attack. He started to chant the spell, as silent as possible. six seconds, five seconds, four seconds, three, two, one... The spell circle formed underneath the deer. As spirits of light raining down from above, they touched the spell circle and turned into light elemental arrows, shot upward.

It was fortunate then, that he managed to hit the deer. The deer skin was lacerated, as arrows of light pierced its body. Though he did not know how ruined the deer meat was. Luso always said that he should cool down the deer by skinning it, making the meat to taste less gamey. As he had no knife to skin it, he could only bring it back to the guild as is, dragging its corpse to scribel city.

Quest Report - Okarin

"Eh? You're back again? Already?" The witch who lived in the cottage at the edge of the forest said.

The slime person nodded their head.

"There's some place I want to go," Okarin said. "I want to learn how to make potions."

"Muu, you're an impatient one. It's the weekend! At least give me a day off!"

"I want to learn how to make potions." Okarin repeated.

The witch clutched her head in frustration.

"I want to learn how to make potions." Okarin repeated once more.

"Okay! Okay! I get it! You don't have to be a broken tape recorder! I know you're a slime, but you don't need to emphasize your pea-sized brain!"

"I want to learn how—"

The witched shoved a sheet of paper into Okarin's face, muffling their mouth.

"Bring me a pretty flower! It must be the flower that you think is prettiest! Better yet, a flower that reminds you of that ostrich Vanguard that you like so much."

Then she promptly slammed the door shut.

+ + +

The prettiest flower.

Okarin wasn't sure which flower was the prettiest.

Nonetheless, they spent the day wandering around the forest looking for flowers.

No... it wasn't that one.

Nor that one.

Okarin encountered a big carnivorous plant.

And... it was pretty!

Okarin knew as soon as they set eyes on it that it was without question prettiest flower around.

A dozen tendrils and vines immediately shot out at the slime person. Razor-sharp leaves and thorns tore into Okarin's flesh.

And it hurt! A lot!

Just like Vicious!

Wow, it was definitely a pretty vicious flower.

Okarin stood there in a daze staring at the razor-sharp row of thorn teeth that lined the mouth of the vase-like plant.

The tendrils of the carnivorous flower plant wiggled up high in the air, preparing for a killing mortal blow.

Suddenly, an arm reached out and grabbed Okarin, pulling them away. It was just in time, because a torrent of vines struck the spot where Okarin had been standing moments earlier. The tendrils were surprisingly destructive, leaving a hole in the ground with dirt and leaves flying into the air.

"What the fuck are you doing?! You're going to get killed!" A stranger shouted into Okarin's ears.

Okarin was still in a daze. They stared at the flower on the carnivorous plant.

The stranger was noisy.

"It's a pretty flower," Okarin said.

The stranger seemed incredulous as he drew a sword and pulled out his shield. He turned and warily faced the plant.

A stray tendril struck the center of his shield, shattering the hardened wood. The stranger screamed as splinters went flying and embedded in the man's skin. Something red dripped onto the forest floor, and the man was shouting something hazy and indistinct.

"Snap out of it, you fucking bitch! Run! Run while you can!"

"Good afternoon mister, I really like that flower. Will you help me get that flower?"

"Fuck! Damn you! I'm a Rank E adventurer! To hell with you and that flower! I won't—"

A razor sharp tendril flew through the air and impaled the man in the back. It interrupted the adventurer mid-sentence, and a spray of dark red blood spewed out from his mouth. The little vines crawled and burst out from inside the man's flesh, the roots already beginning the devour the flesh like a parasitic plant greedily drinking blood.

The man screamed. He was being eaten alive.

The vines quickly immobilized the man and started dragging him back to the carnivorous plant. Although he struggled, the thorns on the tentacles were merciless as they raked across the man's skin. Moments later, his windpipe was slit, and then the screams went silent. It was just a just a bag of flesh that trashed around silently against the restrictive bonds that were slowly suffocating him and cutting his vital arteries. Soon enough, the jugular was cut, and a fountain of blood sprayed open on the forest grass.

Okarin watched emotionlessly.

Eventually, the corpse became still.

The carnivorous plant continued to drag it nonetheless. Slowly, it pulled the body into its vase-like main body. The limbs and the torso were like a rag doll as it tumbled into the plant's hollow cavity. The lid of the venus-fly-trap-like structure closed shut. Gradually, the vines and tendrils calmed down. They retracted back towards the plant. Then, it went dormant.

Okarin stood there motionlessly, almost frozen solid.

Why had Okarin been ignored?

The slime person was reluctant to take a step. What if the plant was sensitive to motion?

Okarin stood there in the forest, perfectly still. They stared at the plant. It seemed like the Carnivorous Plant was full? Looking carefully, it didn't have enough space in its body cavity to digest more than one victim at a time.

However, the flower was pretty.

They stood there for a very long time staring at the flower.

Perhaps an hour? Longer? The flower was very pretty.

Eventually, Okarin decided to tiptoe closer to the plant.

Apprehensively, they took a single step.

There was no response from the plant.

It seemed like it was asleep. Perhaps it went dormant as it digested its latest prey.

Cautiously, Okarin crept up beside the flower and...

Okarin snatched one of the pretty flowers.

They bolted away immediately as the carnivorous plant came roaring back to life, tentacles flying in anger and agony.

But Okarin was quick. In a blink of the eye, the slime was gone.

+ + +

"I found the prettiest flower," Okarin said.

"Mhm, mhm, this is a good one. Very pretty. It's much better than I expected," the witch replied.

"Will it make a good potion?" Okarin asked.

"Absolutely. You can almost taste the angst, death, and karma on this flower. Memories of objects are extremely powerful."

"I don't really get it, but what kind of potion will the flower be used for?"

"Oh, just an ordinary love potion for the typical village girl hoping to seduce her first crush. Don't worry about it."

"Will you teach me to make a potion?"

"Mhm~ You're already learning it. Come back another day."

"You said that last time, but I don't feel like I've learned anything."

"It's okay dear. You're learning a lot. Go home and rest."

The witch shut the door and Okarin was left standing outside of the cottage.

Summary:
  • The witch asked Okarin to collect the "prettiest" flower.
  • Okarin found a Carnivorous Plant that had a very pretty flower.
  • Okarin was attacked by the Carnivorous Plant, but was saved by an unnamed Rank E adventurer.
  • The Rank E adventurer was eaten by the Carnivorous Plant.
  • The Carnivorous Plant went dormant after eating the Rank E adventurer.
  • Okarin snatched a flower from the Carnivorous Plant and ran away.
  • Okarin delivered the flower to the witch.

"It's a deer alright," the receptionist commented unimpressed, "burn at the stomach and still fully skinned, probably haven't been bled out, but that isn't a problem." The receptionist continued muttering mostly to himself.

"Boya, I can't give you the full reward as the chef want the meat to be fresh and edible, and you were only supposed to bring the meat, not the whole game..."

I also remember that person having there head cut off for some reason around that statement so probably not something I'd actually want." I seem to have muttered out loud someone looked weirdly at that after but time for me to go and do some border patrolling I guess maybe I'll come across something interesting out there. I grabbed it signed off with a receptionist who gave me a little wooden badge and told me to hand it over to the city guard barrack head and then I headed off to the barracks. Along the way the pyrovore woke up and tried to munch on my neck again so I dropped it into the backpack so it could eat some slime a minor annoyance I'd have to get it more food soon.

Arriving at the barracks I showed the little badge to the man at the gate and he waved me in. Surprising that there is only one guard there but maybe the other just went for a toilet break or something or maybe they just have that little staff. The time currently was still a little before first light about 10 minutes and 34 seconds by my predictions so I needed to join up with the group fast after all they would likely head out at first light and not return until after dark. I arrived at the point where I had been directed by the gates guard with 10 minutes and 3 seconds to spare. I quickly knocked on the door. "Come in but do mind the mess a bit."
I rapidly opened the door, shut it behind me and then pulled out the badge, "AIEO reporting for patrol duty." I threw the man a salute even though I really couldn't give a crap about him the clock was ticking so these perfunctory actions were required.
"Ah the one who was troublesome in the training excercise... I doubted you'd even take a quest like this. Anyway grab the badge with a 1 star on it and throw me that one. I'm behind the paperwork so just lob it over it and please don't collapse it."
"Roger." I quickly throw the badge over the paperwork and retrieved the lonely 1st star badge sitting on his desk. Then I had to ask where I was supposed to meet them. "Where do I meet them sir? Have yet to be told that."
I hear a heavy sigh from the other side of the stacked paperwork there where piles of it all throughout the room creating a sort of enclosure that locked this man into the dark. "Just exit and go left there should be a flag sitting there."
"Thanks." I quickly exited the room and the skulls clacked as I rapidly turned around. 9 minutes left that conversation took to long.

I wandered through the base for a bit 8 minutes left till departure time. Finding the flag I saw what looked for the most part a rag tag bunch of lunatics. It seemed I'd fit in fine. I quickly joined them and flashed the badge the others nodded and grinned I did not like that but oh well. Now you may ask why there were groups if we were to patrol the borders I'd assume it's because there are many threats out there that an indiviudal will find it hard to deal with. Like say a small horde of spiders comes trundling through most individuals will find it hard to deal with a large group of spiders and delay them all. So they have a large group of people do the patrolling so that enemies can be delayed longer whilst the "captain" summons others with his horn. As the timer ticked down I made sure to familiarise myself with this hodge podge group of "people". I don't care enough to analyse them further than that I have enough information to digest at this point. 3 minutes till leaving time at latest. There were about 10 of us in the group a little larger than I thought it might be but with the hodge podge look maybe that's the reason. The man with the horn picks up the flag and begins to inhale. "MOVE OUT." Explodes from his mouth and then he quickly starts jogging towards the Western gate which would take about 3 minutes in all to reach.

We went out through the western gate just as the sun rose. It seems he was being extremely punctual for some reason who knows why. We quickly opened up the gate and gate guards rushed to get to their positions no wonder he was being so punctual. He didn't want to annoy people by not showing up to the gate on time. After filling out he pointed at 5 guys and told them to head off to the west. One of the five had a horn on himself likely the vice captain of the group. The next action that was taken was the man signalling the rest of us off the other way down.

The first threat we encountered was that of a group of snow fiends that had decided to pay us a visit and had somehow gotten into an argument with a fire fiend. All of them disgusting xenos or maybe daemons not to show I hoped they would get into a fight but they didn't so those abominations would continue on living. They stopped arguing as soon as they saw us the snow fiends where directed to head to the Northern gate for some reason though and the fire was told to head on over to the gate. He was a nuisance and an annoyance where he was as he could start a fire at any time.

The next group was more a suspicious group than an actual threat they where wheeling around a giant contraption with a bell hanging on it. The group was completely cloaked themselves though I saw a small little bit of fur hanging out. "I'll deal with this myself you guys continue on I'll catch up." The smell that wafted from the group smelt like how the Skaven did and the weapon did look a little like something that the Skaven had crafted for their own defence. Though I don't know what point the giant bell would have. We continued on as things where.

The boss soon caught up to us and said that he'd directed the group into the city via the south entrance which were the biggest gates it seems. Anyway I wonder what that was all about? What exactly could it have been about someone else would almost assuredly tell me about it later on after all that's why I had money that I set aside separately from the money that I'd be using to pay off my debt for information gathering purposes. In the period of time that the captain had been away we didn't meet anyone who was to much of a threat just people admiring the wall or other such stuff really and nothing untoward happened.

After he rejoined us we quickly reached the corner and did an about turn heading back down the wall this patrol was actually quite an annoyance to do to much walking but a small price to pay for the monitoring of the wall and noticing all these interesting people who like to hang around the wall. We came across about 10 slimes who had decided to try and climb the wall. "Okay guys line up and take them down on my mark." Every guard pulled out some form of ranged weaponry and I loaded the crossbow, "Fire, reload" I quickly fired the shot off into the slime furthest to the left and smashed the core out of the thing with the blunt bolt. It's good that I got a few more slime corpses, I was quickly reloading whilst having that thought. The pyrovore began to climb out of the bag on my shoulder. We were all ready to fire again. "FIRE." We fired off the shoots sadly this meant that I now had another blunted bolt. The thing had bounced off the wall after nudging the core out of the slime. The commander said to clean the mess up so I quickly moved over and put 2 of the slimes into my backpack for the pyrovore to eat so it could continue to grow and evolve it's fire cannon.

A while later we saw a small group of goblins the commander had us get into position to fire upon the goblins again there were of course only five. So we lined up to fire on them again. The commander readied himself for the yelling this was getting to be quite a repetitive task at this point we'd likely be doing this all day an annoyance that would it appears continue to be the case. Anyway this was fine I got to see the wall and the expertise of the guards which was high enough for me to care about this. "Retrieve items." I quickly rushed over to collect my bolt which had snapped damnit. Only 19 sharp bolts left now it seemed.

The rest of the day was, "All quiet on the Western front". All quiet I say but well we did run into a few other groups that were annoying but I luckily did not have to deal with any of them for the most part they where fucking xenos that never seemed to get along like a Skaven and a dwarf that almost started a fight on the road there but I wasn't involved in any of these proceedings. There was a struggling merchant caravan with a caravan that had new burn markings that appeared upon it as if it had recently been through a major battle and used as a defensive bunker. Anyway that would likely be posted in to the guild for a report which could be fun to deal with bandits and massacre them all or whatever exactly had stolen the things that these merchants had lost.

The pyrovore seems to have grown an extremely small amount from it's eating maybe it's just the gobbet of acid has been completely reset or something or it gained a little bit of weight maybe I need to feed it less slimes oh well. We returned through the gate shutting it behind us at the exact moment the sun had gone down behind the horizon and slowly made our way back to the barracks where we'd be dismissed it seemed.

At the barracks the barrack chieftain came out collected the badges from the adventurers and handed back the original wooden ones and dismissed us to return back to the guild so of course I bolted off as soon as I was dismissed. I had no want to be here the calculations that I needed for something where almost complete and I needed to finish this off as fast as I could. It had to do with something important. Time since dismissal 1 minute 45 seconds when I arrived at the guild having rushed straight there. I handed the receptionist the badge filled in a small report and waited around to see if the receptionist had any questions regarding what exactly had happened just in case. As well as to update my mental maps from the maps that had been drawn up.
Started patrol at Western gate in a group labelled group 1.
Met abominable snow fiends and a fire fiend.
There was a weird group of things messing around with a bell on wheels the head of the patrol group dealt with them though. Probably Skaven from the smell and fur that I saw but other possibilities may exist.
Killed some slimes trying to enter the city with the guard group about 7/8's of the way up the gate.
Killed some goblins near the mid point of the wall.
Carriage with fire damage and no goods inside came past us.
"Things near the city were certainly a lot busier than normal it seems?

"I'll pray that this was just an abnormality, and not the new norm.

"May your emperor bring you safety."

Quest Report - Okarin

"It's your third time here, mhm?" The witch said.

"Ah, yeah, right."

"I guess I can help you make your potion. You can remember this recipe, right?"

"Really? Yes definitely! I absolutely won't forget it."

"You're not willing to reconsider giving me your slime core?"

"Sorry. I'd rather keep my slime core."

"A pity then. It would have been fun to have you as my student."

"Mhm."

"Say, are you good at cooking?"

"Not exactly?"

"It's often said that the secret ingredient to make any recipe taste good is love."

"???"

"Remember this, okay dear? If absolutely nothing else, remember it. You need to remember it."

+ + +

The slime person stood inside of the witch's cottage. It was surprisingly plain and undecorated, and also much smaller than Okarin expected. The cottage lacked a bed or any other essential amenities, and there weren't any other smaller rooms or doors. A variety of different bottles and jars lined the shelves, and the main feature in the room was a large cauldron.

The cauldron was pure black and enormous, bigger than any pot that Okarin had ever seen in their life.

Presumably, this was the cauldron that the witch used for brewing her craft.

"Is there a flavor that you like?" The witch asked. "Mint? Strawberry? Cherry? Lavender?"

"What's the difference?" Okarin asked.

The witch shrugged. "It doesn't really matter as long as you like it. Smells nice."

"Then... um... lavender."

"There's a garden outside. Go get yourself a bunch of lavender then."

Okarin stood up and went for the door.

"Ah, wait." The witch interrupted them.

She held up a faint purple flower in her hands.

"This is plant is called Saponaria officinalis. It's more commonly known as soapwort or soapweed."

Okarin stared at the purple flower. They recognized it.

"It commonly grows by the side of the road, and many people consider it a weed."

"I know that flower," Okarin said. "Slimes avoid it."

"Of course. It's the traditional way to make soap, after all. The plant is rich in saponins."

"Right."

"I need you to harvest a bunch. We'll need a lot. As much as one of those giant baskets. Make sure you include the roots."

"I'll go get some gloves then—"

"No."

The witch interrupted Okarin emphatically.

"No gloves. I need you to harvest them with your bare hands. It will burn, since you are a slime."

Okarin paused for a moment at the door.

The witch stared straight at the slime person with an unwavering look in her eye.

"Can you do it?"

"What kind of healing potion is this supposed to be?" Okarin asked.

"It's a healing potion, and a powerful one, but I never said it wouldn't be a painless affair for you to make it."

Okarin closed their eyes momentarily.

"Will you do it? Or do you change your mind? There's no shame in—"

"I'm not afraid of pain." Okarin spoke up suddenly.

They opened the door, grabbed an enormous basket, and stormed out of the cottage.

+ + +

Many hours later, Okarin returned with everything the witch asked for.

The slime person hid their disfigured hands behind their back.

The witch said nothing and took the basket.

"This is ordinary firewood." She gestured at the pile of wood beneath the cauldron. "The pot is filled with rainwater. And it must be rainwater — tears from the sky — not river water. This is extremely important."

"We will burn the soapweed along with the wood. The cauldron must be brought to boil."

She tossed the basket's contents onto the pyre.

The witch then snapped her fingers and the wood ignited.

Okarin blinked a few times before... the smoke suddenly ballooned like a mushroom cloud, and Okarin coughed a few times.

"Oh, I forgot to mention that you might be a bit uncomfortable. The burning soapweed might hurt your eyes and other stuff."

A little too late for the warning.

Okarin was already coughing, their throat burning up like it was on fire. Tears were welling in their eyes, and the slime person was struggling to breath amidst the smog of purple flowers. They wanted to open the window. The window! Fresh air!

"A-Air..." They barely managed to choke out, with tears rolling down their cheek.

However, the witch blocked the way to the exit and the windows.

"You must never take your eyes away from the cauldron." She said.

Okarin wanted to wipe their eyes with their hand, but... oh... their hands... they were already burnt...

The slime was thoroughly weeping now.

"Patience," the witch said. "The more you cry, the more effective it is. We will wait for the fire to burn down completely. Until then, we watch the cauldron and pay our respects to the fire."

It was difficult to see the reaction on Okarin's face.

"Magic is so cruel..." they whispered.

+ + +

Hours later, the fire finally burned down to hot coals.

There were ashes and a simmering cauldron of hot water.

Okarin's relief was indescribable, yet at the same time it was hard for them to feel happy.

The witch silently stepped forward and scooped up a pile of ashes with a spade.

"Wood ash, otherwise known as potash. Mixed with the ashes of soapweed." She spoke factually.

She dumped the shovel of dust into the cauldron and scooped a few more piles of ash.

"Potash. Potassium hydroxide. Otherwise known as lye. It's quite a strong alkali."

She also tossed the sprigs of lavender into the pot at this point too.

The witch turned to face Okarin, expression totally grave.

"It's your turn now."

"What?"

"You're the main ingredient in the potion. You're getting in the cauldron, right?"

"Wait what?! I thought we were just going to use my healing jelly."

"Mhm, and we are. But you need to get in the cauldron first."

"...I'm not going to die, am I? The soap... alkali..."

"That depends on you, doesn't it?"

Okarin froze for a few moments.

"This is magic. If you believe in it, anything is possible."

They felt their voice catch in their throat.

"That's... That's so reckless..." Okarin murmured.

"Mhm, certainly. But will you do it?"

Okarin closed their eyes.

They felt tears rising to their eyes again.

They had cried so much... yet... it hadn't run dry yet.

In a few short moments, Okarin made a choice.

+ + +

Things were white.

Pure white.

Dazzling white.

It was...

...
+ + +

Okarin was wrapped in a blanket.

They were crying.

Huddled up against a wall in the cottage.

The slime person was a full 50% smaller in size than before, and they had shrunk substantially.

The witch walked over and tapped Okarin lightly on the head.

Okarin looked up.

She passed a glass flask of vibrant purple fluid to the slime person.

"You missed the last part, but it was simply boiling the cauldron of liquid away until there was this little bit left in the bottom."

Okarin reached up and grabbed the bottle, hugging it into their arms.

"It was a good potion," she said.

Okarin was crying.

Summary:
  • Okarin visited the witch.
  • The witch asked Okarin to gather soapweed and lavender.
  • They made a potent healing potion.

"I did it!" The man suddenly said.

Ramza stood in vigilance. The floor and wall had been covered with the man's blood, as he wrote on them. Symbols unknown to him adorned the wall. As the man exclaimed, Ramza could feel something building up.

A magic circle? This is bad!

As he saw the magic circle, he ran above, to the guard office. He needed the key. He hoped that he was not late at this point. Leaping through the stairs, he hastened his pace.

He arrived in front of the guard's office door, looking for the man who had him assigned to that prisoner's jail. As he ran through the corridor, Ramza felt that whatever magic the man did was going to manifest. He pushed the door.

"Emergency! prisoner, going to escape!" He said.

The man in front of him immediately stood from his sitting position. His expression turned grave.

"The one you are guarding?" The man said, walking toward the door outside in haste.

Ramza followed the man along. "I felt a spell building up."

"We should hurry, then." The man said. And then, he shouted, "Guards! Follow me!"

Along with the guards, ramza entered the prison once again. Leading the way, he went down the stairs to the underground prison. At this point he felt that it was too late, as the mana build up he felt was no longer there.

He arrived, and found the man there, sitting on the ground. His back leaned to the wall. The man seem to observe the ceiling with interest, as he did not pay attention to the their arrival. While observing the man, A guard went forward, his shoulder brushed against him.

"Speak! What have you done!" The guard said.

"..." The man continued to stare at the ceiling.

"I ordered you! Speak now!"

The prisoner tilted his head slightly. He glanced sideways in the direction of the guard.

"Curious, aren't you?" He said. "Well... I'll let you find out yourself."

"You...!" The guard stepped forward. His hands shook the wooden bar separating the prisoner and them.

"Lea, calm down." Another voice was heard. It was the voice of the one who assigned him here. "Ramza, continue to guard him. I'll post another guard with you shortly."

"Yes sir." Ramza and the man called Lea answered. Lea started to step back after that.

---

Did it fail? Ramza wondered. He was sure the magic has been cast. At this point, his only question was what was its effect. At least, the effect was not immediately obvious.

Then, it was the time to change shift. Putting the incident in the back of his mind, Ramza left.

Sleepers in Mertis

Description
Agent,

The head office have approved the mission to cripple the Golden Rose. As per tradition, we strike from afar and end them with sound of falling coins. To do this we require information currently unobtainable through traditional means. Your target, the ledger of the entity known as the Uncrowned King.

You must gather your tools and make preparations.

Before the seasonal ball, travel north from the Crossroad Tavern and find Mertis and scout the village. Gather information and assess what additional support you will need. You will be provided with a luxury villa and the identity of a noble. Two guild associates will serve as your servants and guards in the duration of your mission. They will protect the villa and ensure the prisoners are secured with in the basement. Their continual existence thereafter will depend on how much they know about your mission.

Caution:
Mertis has the appearance of unexceptional village, and this holds true to services industries such as Inns, taverns and game halls. But intel suggests production industries such as farms and woodcutters make almost no sales at all. Remember, for the duration of your stay you are a noble.

Attached is the location details of the safe house, a file with your identity, and a disguising potion that should last for the duration of your mission.

Objectives
  • Travel to Mertis
  • Scout the village covertly
  • Prepare for the heist
  • Request additional Resources
<<Optional>>
  • Interrogate the Architect
  • Interrogate the vault maker's apprentice
  • Find out the security level of the Count's villa

To the Merchant Guild,

Following the mission, I had already journeyed to Mertis and almost finished the preparation stage. In this heist, I had only brought one helper, and she only knew that we were going to attend the Dance Party and talked to the Court.

Through our connection, using the name of the Cricetrax Family, I had acquired both the layout of the Court's mansion, as well as the outdated version of the vault's design. There was also some information about the residents of the mansion, but they were of no significance.

Regarding the additional resource, I only needed the material I requested from the previous exchange, and one more thing. Brought me a substitute. The person should at least be of the same height and has a similar silhouette to me. Their facial appearance doesn't matter, but they must be loyal. It would be great if she possessed some firepower, but it was not necessary.

Quest: Weapon Training
Sponsor:
City Guards
Location: Scribel City Guard Training ground
Required Level: None

Objective:
Train with a skilled guard and learn a way to defend yourself as an adventurer. (Remember you're required to pay a 15 G training fee remember to bring it with you to the training grounds.)

Description:
With adventurers leaving behind children and those who can’t fend for themselves. We the city guard have an offer to make to you. Bring 15 G and we’ll have a guard give you training on a weapon of your choice for a day. Trust me, it's from the kindness of our heart we're giving you this training not because of budget issues.

Reward: Gain a understanding towards a single skill on the list:
  • Scribal guard swordsmanship (Unlike those with lances we can actually move in the city.)
  • Scribal guard lancemanship (What use is a sword when you can take your enemy out before they can even make it to you?)
  • Scribal guard archery (What use is a lance or sword when you’re firing from a distance.)
  • Scribal guard macemanship (Archery has distance, lances has range, swords have speed but they can’t deal with armor that’s when we come in.)
  • Scribal adventurer training (We do happen to have a few adventurers in our staff. In case you do want to learn something different but you'll have to ask for them. And, even then it's not guaranteed with such a troublesome group.)

BigGreen's Quest Report
~~~~Today was my first day training with Scribel's guards. I started out the day by reporting to the Guard's training ground and greeting my instructor for the day, Guard Vascille. My first impressions of Vascille was that he looked quite calm and relaxed, but also quite serious doing his orders. I learned this during the day training with him.
Vascille started out introducing me to the varieties of spears and helping me figure out what was right for me. I was quite intrigued about learning about the different uses and different scenarios, in which to use the right spear. I eventually decided on the Pike, due to the suggestion of Vascille and on the case if I ever get caught with-out my own pike. I could quickly fashion one out of wood from myself, though not as sharp as a metal one.
I was told by Vascille that I must first get used to the feeling of holding a spear and finding my balance. I first tried to get used to the weight in my hands and to find the balance that Vascille told me about. It was quite confusing at first but with the constant help from Vascille, I could at least have a beginner stance in holding a spear. The next step was to incorporate attacking, while in this stance.
The day coming to an end, I mostly just learned how to hold a spear correctly. Vascille explained that this was the foundation in improving one's spearmanship and that even he practices his stance everyday. He also told to come by the next day for training if I wanted to learn more, just to remember to bring 15g again. ~~~~
As the third son of a noble, he was a stranger to paperwork. Sure, he could read and write just fine. Arithmetics was also no problem for him. But, it was his father and his eldest brother who did the paperwork for Beoulve territory. His brother, as a knight commander may have done some in his duty. But him? The closest thing he did to paperwork was when he entered the akademy.
Agrias, bless her soul, was the one taking care of the logistics. As he was on the run from the church for the whole time, Agrias was the one who did most of the shopping when they entered the city. It was not like he need to do paperwork himself, during the war.
Thus, it was his first time doing such. He was thankful of the woman, taking time to explain the logic behind what he had to that day. What he needed to do in the archives that day was to match the sighting of brigands around the scribel region in the quest report to the map, and sort it by date. Thus, he started his work.
Leafing through each report, he noted any sighting of brigands on the paper. The location and the date. Then, he placed the report on its own pile. After he finished sorting them, he placed those reports that did not contain any sighting on the left corner of the desk.
The next thing he did was to note the general location. Most of the adventurer's report has no specific location of the sighting. Landmarks could be noted here and there. But most of incident written was en route to the destination. Since the brigands target were caravan going to either asteria village or gelderholm, he looked at the map, noting the probable location based on their travel time if they go along the established route.
There, he found a concentration of attack in three day distance of going to Gelderholm. A brigand group repeatedly attack the caravan. Though, a lot of time they were repealed by the adventurer. He looked at the subjugation report that month, searching for any bandit subjugation mission there. As he found none, he made a note for it. Since last seen incident was nine days ago, though, he was wondering if the brigands were still there.
After he was done noting everything, he returned the report taken from the archives, and report it to the lady that supervised him. As that day's work was done, he went and submitted his quest report.
unevaluated
- I have done a job in the archive, making a report of bandit sightings around scribel region.
- The bandit that attacked travelers going to gelderholm was mostly in number of tens to twenty. The location of bandit is estimated to be three days away from scribel, using caravan.
- The sighting of bandit near asteria village were inconclusive. Most target were merchant caravan. As for location, some of them said that they are attacked during the night on second day, and some of them said on the first day. Since the speed between each caravan varied, a few took two day, and most took three day journey, the estimated location of attack was provided, though I am not certain of its reliability.
"Those are some troublesome sightings, mister Ramza, I'll forward them to the proper authorities... Let us pray they were all just a coincidence and not something worse though.
"You did a good job though, rest well.
"May the gods grant you the knowledge to do that which you're unused to."
Report - Not Yet Appraised
Sleepers in Mertis
Description
Agent,
The head office have approved the mission to cripple the Golden Rose. As per tradition, we strike from afar and end them with sound of falling coins. To do this we require information currently unobtainable through traditional means. Your target, the ledger of the entity known as the Uncrowned King.
You must gather your tools and make preparations.
Before the seasonal ball, travel north from the Crossroad Tavern and find Mertis and scout the village. Gather information and assess what additional support you will need. You will be provided with a luxury villa and the identity of a noble. Two guild associates will serve as your servants and guards in the duration of your mission. They will protect the villa and ensure the prisoners are secured with in the basement. Their continual existence thereafter will depend on how much they know about your mission.
Caution:
Mertis has the appearance of unexceptional village, and this holds true to services industries such as Inns, taverns and game halls. But intel suggests production industries such as farms and woodcutters make almost no sales at all. Remember, for the duration of your stay you are a noble.
Attached is the location details of the safe house, a file with your identity, and a disguising potion that should last for the duration of your mission.
Objectives
  • Travel to Mertis
  • Scout the village covertly
  • Prepare for the heist
  • Request additional Resources
<<Optional>>
  • Interrogate the Architect
  • Interrogate the vault maker's apprentice
  • Find out the security level of the Count's villa
  • Avoid detection of the count's hidden agents
  • Ask other player, or npc to be apart of the heist. but as far as they know, its just to steal from a noble
To the Merchant Guild,
Following the mission, I had already journeyed to Mertis and almost finished the preparation stage. In this heist, I had only brought one helper, and she only knew that we were going to attend the Dance Party and talked to the Court.
Through our connection, using the name of the Cricetrax Family, I had acquired both the layout of the Court's mansion, as well as the outdated version of the vault's design. There was also some information about the residents of the mansion, but they were of no significance.
Regarding the additional resource, I only needed the material I requested from the previous exchange, and one more thing. Brought me a substitute. The person should at least be of the same height and has a similar silhouette to me. Their facial appearance doesn't matter, but they must be loyal. It would be great if she possessed some firepower, but it was not necessary.
Agent,
Your report have been received, and of what limited eyes and ears we have in Mertis we know well of your progress. The resources you seek will be delivered post hast.
As for the substitute, the loyalty clause of the request will take some time to prepare, we can easily engineer an individual as your double but for loyalty such an ephemeral thing, the guild can indeed buy and do have one person in mind, but, this loyalty doe have its limit.
On the morning of the party she will appear in your bedroom, awaiting orders. She was once a warrior of renown equal in strength to that of yourself. But whatever they were they are no more.
She is a melee fighter with fist clad in lightning. She will gladly die for you as long as you never offer to cure what ails her. Her approaching death from a disease within will see her loyal to your cause, and that sickness is what binds her. Her family that the guild will care for after her passing will ensure her loyalty to the guild before you.
She will have no name and will be whatever you name her. If you can not accept such an individual, I am afraid the guild will have to find your skill inadequate.
May you prosper as always, agent.
