Disclaimer: Studio Ghibli exists, and is being ignored because I believe the (two? three?) movies that resemble what I am talking about do not count because of the themes and allegory inherent in those films. They are not relevant here.

You read the title so lets cut to the chase; ever played a game like XC2 or seen one of the those anime that look like fantasy settings and then halfway through are like 'wow le epic cool sci-fi civilization degenerated into a fantasy one after thousands of years!' and similar stories?
I want to know if anyone has ever read one of these stories that is actually any good, or if there is a way to do this concept in an interesting and nuanced way, for reasons other than rule of anime cool.

Like, has anyone read a story where in the middle of the epic fantasy swordfight an honest to god orbital laser is pulled out, and that twist been a good thing for the setting and narrative? Is there a good way to do this concept that won't undermine either the fantasy setting or the narrative stakes?

This was a theme in the entire Shannara series by Terry Brooks - looked like traditional fantasy but was post apoc. Many of the "magic items" are just high tech. Have only read about 1/5 of the first book (Sword of Shannara) myself but I hear it is the only weak one in the sequence.

Steven Boyette's "Change" (Ariel: A Book of the Change, Elegy Beach and another one I've seen teased but not released that was supposed to drop in 2023) series kind of dealt with this (the apocalypse was the return of magic, making all technology above a certain point useless).

And, of course there is the original novel Planet of the Apes was based on, La Planète des singes

Utawarerumono is basically this.

First game is fine, and when the mecha start showing up, it doesn't feel too out of place, but a bit.

But then the sequel, mask of truth, deception, etc? Holy heck, they do a far better job using that high-tech past.

But generally? I want to say Vision of Escaflowne pulls it off the best.

Please read my top2 favorite : History strongest husband
(plz ignore the giga generic, shoujoish title)

Im fking tired to spam recommend it and no one giving a f, while everyone simp
for Reverend Insanity.

(and well, SHF dont care about chinese webnovels, beside Nota and Elijah and a few others)

1) Wuxia original worldview
2) Very popular in chinese readers community (probably)
3) Was in top rankings at same lvl as DouluoDalu4 in raws
4) Ancient civilization
5) Ancient civilization nukes
6) MC nuked armies.
7) MC is a milder version of the RI mc, but he makes far more sense. He not trying to be edgy and evil for the sake of evil.
7.5) MC goal is "to have a family".
His whole first life was about getting a "wife" as he was facecrippled during a lab experiment. So he became the world famous doctor, even peace nobel but never succeeded (even bribing a nurse to marry, but she cried before the marriage, so he let her go / parents saying they will do anything but never asking to take their daughter. Causing him to see ugly human nature)
So if he lose this "family" in 2nd life, he would become a madman like RI's mc that dont give a f to anything.

8) Smartest MC in all chinese novels
he predicts 4 moves ahead of enemies (even surprising readers)

9) He is very weak and only brains
And dont do the trope of "growing stronger and be able to fight".

10) Its on NU but links were taken down

the translated chapters are on internet

11) MC is a ruthless madman, he even dare to use STDs to assassinate a whole family
12) He eunuched (cut balls) villains that coveted his wife (and killed them ofc)
13) A rare author that wrote Qi sucks/flaws
14) Pretty waifus
14.5) First waifu, is as kind as DoupoCangqiong FL
Another is a pirate queen, that got 2 blades that she spin around herself and becoming invincible blender that turn close enemies into ketchup.

15) tldr : THE SERIES IS IDENTICAL AS (but better) :

but idiots made a shitty manhua adaptation named :
DONT READ IT. The cover is a trap !
(the pirate queen is like disney live action looks. when she should be MissFortune lvl or basically having looks of the queen in ESTATE series)

Edit : Skip the 10 first chapters or something if you want. Its boring prologue where MC is "divorced" and try to get money by negociating with a dye merchant. The truly good part start when he marry the FL. Heck, just after marriage, a maid badmouth MC and despite being close maid, the heroine punish her.
Also heroine has snake-skin armor, that is closely similar to Raikou of FGO (no big boobs vers.)
Edit 2 : NO BIG LASER GUNS but like you asked, its a series that incorporate perfectly a "ancient civilization" into the plot. Like the jp trope, despite being a chinese webnovel.
