Does putting the LitRPG tag make your story more attractive?

Title says it all. I was wondering if I should keep the LitRPG tag I have on my story: Heir de Winter even though its pseudo LitRPG. Basically, the MC has a program, similar to those in mmos, which keeps track of his progress almost like a fitness tracker. He doesn’t gain any skills or cheats from it though. It’s not heavy LitRPG and the program doesn’t play the biggest role in the story.

I'll say just put it if you haven't reached the 25 max tags. Having more tags in my opinion in your story is the better

Yes. The effect is significantly more noticeable on Royal Road, but I promise you that there is a plethora of people here as well who will read every single thing that even slightly implies it has a system involved. I have met many readers who have admitted that they will basically read every single thing under the LitRPG tag, including paying money for basically every single LitRPG they see on Amazon no matter what the quality is.

Everybody likes to think that smut is the biggest clickbait, but they don't know the power of baiting with LitRPG. LitRPG dominates smut when it comes to getting views because of a single tag.

Honestly, I haven't seen a single LitRPG + smut anywhere near as popular as the most popular plain LitRPGs. However, LitRPG + harem is extremely popular and often at the top, especially on Amazon.

:blob_hmm: That seems consistent with my observations.

Now that you say it, I think I will make a request feature thread for this. The popularity of LitRPGs is so extreme that it had become a serious issue. :blob_evil_two:

Well, yes. That genre actually have a huge audience.

Though, your story doesn't really sound like a LitRPG. The RPG in the name is the core of the genre.

:blob_hmm: And what about LitRPG and smut?
Now I'm wondering: What would a litRPG be like if it was based on porn games? Where instead of the solution always being to get better at combat, it instead ends up being to get better at sex? Then it gets twisted so that instead of trying to make non-combat skills into combat skills, the main character is trying to turn combat skills into sex skills? Hmmm... :blob_hmm_two:

Cough Cough... I ain't totally gonna publish something related to intercourse with MC getting stronger by how much feelings grow between him and the partners... Totally not slice of life... Totally not small business management... Totally not with lots of wholesome lewding... Yeah, I'm totally not working on it right now... I totally didn't finish the prologue after this 8th chapter and I'm totally not stacking them up...

Jokes (are they?) aside, I'm on edge with adding LitRPG tag. There's a system, but it's more like in the background. Only getting a lot of exposure during its introduction, since it explains how the world works. Same with the smut tag. How much smut has there to be to qualify? With how the prologue has been going I don't think I'll reach any hot stuff before like chapter 10. Goddammit, I shouldn't have went with slice of life and erotic theme :blob_popcorn:

I read the thread. I'm tempted to reply to it so that we can go back to disagreeing with each other, but I'd rather not get too absorbed in another post like that. My Forum Warrior skill is still on cooldown and my (mental) HP isn't high enough to tank that right now. So instead, I'll just be waiting to watch the most-likely-inevitable drama from the sidelines. :blobtaco:

There are numerous actual games, mainly text-based games, that are already like this. All you'd have to do is take one of their systems and apply it to a LitRPG and boom, e z p z. I tried it myself but never quite got to utilize that part of the system. I'm doing it now, but only as a gamelit rather than a litrpg.

I don't want my solution to be necessarily adopted, I just want public awareness for what I perceive as an issue. But, yes, I think that LitRPGs are dominant, too dominant. So lets cut them down and not wait until they eventually fall out of favour.

I would like to point out that yes, adding the LitRPG would get you more views, but then people who click on it because of the LitRPG tag are also looking for LitRPG elements in the story. If you don't really have that, those people would be upset about the bait, and this is how you get 1-star ratings and unhappy readers.

Also, there a few people (like me) who tend to avoid stories with the LitRPG tag, so you can also scare away potential readers.

Thanks for your guy’s input it really helped. I’m deciding the leave the LitRPG tag cause it still plays some element into the story.

i personally didn't like the tag. it gives me the impression that more than half of the chapters are spam of status that didn't even matter to me, while the rest are fillers.

if they wanted to go in-depth to the game system, i'd rather play an actual game.

Ngl that's what I thought as well. I can comprehend the appeal of having a system in a story, but I can't, for the life of me, understand why. It's literally numbers on a screen. If I wanna get excited over numbers on a screen, I'd go play a game where I'd actually recieve the catharsis of seeing those numbers take effect.

Maybe some people take pleasure from seeing their favourite characters improve over their increased numbers. Everyone's different, after all. But it could've just been done WITHOUT the system in the first place, is what my reasoning lies. But if you think that system and numbers add to the experience, then I can't take that away from you,

weirdo.

Personally, what I enjoy most about well written LitRPG, is seeing how the entire system fits together, and how those statuses translate to effects in the world. Which makes it very frustrating when the numbers get used badly, and are no more informative than DBZ power levels (I've seen stories where it was LESS informative). I'll note: DBZ only used those numbers for a short time (I suspect it was mainly to help create a sense of scale for just how large the gap was between various groups, and how fast power could rise for some of them).

Generally, it seems like the most popular LitRPG stories are the ones that basically present a fictional game people wish they could play.
