Personally, it's all about reading for me. I'm someone who gets obsessive about a certain genre. After reading a crap ton of novels in that genre, at some point I started wondering hmm, what if it happened this way? That's how my current stories stem. I could probably name at least one novel I've read that has inspired each of my stories. Also as a tip, start with something short. Personally, I started out with shorter stories and I'm slowly building up. That worked for me, it may not for you but be careful about jumping straight into large projects with no guarantee that you'll finish.
