Hi everyone!

Here's the thing: I've been working as a temporary replacement for a guy for almost a year and a half. He was off work due to cancer, and he got progressively better. His cancer was beaten last summer, he has been recovering ever since.

I realy like my workplace. My bosses are understanding, my colleagues are cool and interesting people and my work is fulfilling as I handle the department that I find the most intellectually stimulating. So yeah, kind of a dream job, but I knew it was going to end when the guy I replace got back.

So for the last year I enjoyed my job, tried to find interesting solutions for the practice's clients, learned a lot from and with my bosses and colleagues and did the best job I could, knowing it would end at some point. I really learned a lot from one of my bosses, who teaches the particular aspect of law I manage at the local college.

I've been expecting my contract to end for some time now, as the person I replace got progressively back in shape. He kept renewing his medical leave, and I kept being offered to keep replacing him for a few months at a time. I am on my second contract (the guy got back for less than a week this fall, so I stayed 4 days unemployed) and fifth renewal altogether.

I was looking for a job elsewhere, as I thought the guy would be back by the begining of february, and I'd already made some progress with nearby practices. My bosses called me in on a meeting today and offered me his job. Of course, I said yes, as it is as close to a dream job as I'll get!

But due to ongoing negociations with the guy leaving and the protections that French workers enjoy*, I cannot tell anyone yet: I've been forbidden to by my bosses. I still need to get it out of my chest, so I'm counting on the relative anonymity of the Internet and the relative obscurity of a webnovel's website forum to share the news (plus my colleagues don't speak English).

I may have felt bad for my predecessor, as I'm basically stealing his job, if I had actually tried to do that. I just kept doing my job, making mistakes sometimes, trying my best, and I was genuinely looking elsewhere. I want to keep working there, this is too good of an opportunity to pass up.

So feel free to berate me for stealing a recovering man's job, congratulate me for getting an awesome position or be annoyed or jealous or happy for me or whatever, you do you! I needed to tell someone, so here I have now!

*For Americans, French workers are about as protected as unionised workers in the US, maybe better. And firing someone is lengthy and expensive on the company side (he'll leave with a nice severance package, wether he agrees to leave amicably or goes through labour court).

PS: I have shit pokerface, and I think my colleague in accountancy is in on the whole thing, she is way too smart and perceptive. I also may have skipped into my office...

Technically you didn't steal it. You just borrowed it and now aren't allowed to give it back 🤔 If you wanted to steal or not isn't up to debate. It's the system's fault, you're free of any moral complications you might have. Just don't brag too much about it. The internet never forgets.

Oh boy.
I know where you live.
I'll contact your firm soon.

(Joking)

For real though, you shouldn't post this on a public forum. There are ways to track your IP and if that guy who is being negotiated found out he could use it against you. Although I doubt it's going to happen, in this world of increasing data risks, I'd be extra careful.

I hope you keep your dream job though.
I got my dream job last year.

Hence the "I'm letting the news out here instead of Facebook, Instagram or X".
It's not 100% safe, but I have a pseudonym, gave some details but not all of them and count on the general goodwill (and apathy) of people reading me.
Please don't bust me out?

Actually, I had been wondering after returning from cancer why they're trying to get me to walk off the firm. This confirms it.

In all seriousness though, congrats and I hope it goes through.
Dream jobs are hard to come by.
Thanks, and thanks for the advice as well!

And congrats on your dream job from last year!

You are now an honorary poncho and sombrero person. You can celebrate taking someone's job by eating tacos, burritos, quesadillas, or enchiladas. lol

How your boss treats your predecessor is out of your control. I do not think you should feel guilty about it. But even if this is a great job, can you really trust your boss after they treated your senpai like that?
