Some general advice to help get pass barriers.
First off, know where your end point is for the story. No matter how large it is, that end point will serve as the stopping point.
This can be done on book by book basis.
Secondly, the connection to the antagonist. A more personal level creates a more immersive experience.
The points in between the lead up, such as the connection to other characters. The world around them, what type of troubles do they face?
These are some of the more basic things, and can get more complex down to the individual level.
For Vita et Mors, the main conflict isn’t with an antagonist. The greatest enemy is the protagonist themselves, their devotion is both their greatest strength and greatest weakness.
This links into the tragedies they face.
