Is it NTR?

So, basically story takes place on an island with tribe societies. And sex is not a taboo in the culture of the natives, though it's not 'free use' either. And even though Mc (female) wil have some more 'stable' relationships (harem?), there will be sex with partially strangers*. Also there may be scenes/mentions of character close for Mc having sex with others as well, since they see it as normal.

So, the question is - should it be considered ntr and have ntr tag? I need it mostly for people not being mad at not adding it.

*By partially strangers i mean characters that won't be part of Mc's close relationship circle (or harem)

Not NTR, but I would advise you to make it clear that it's a poly society, and some people are gonna be mad anyways, even if you clarify. NTR really means that a love interest gets stolen from the MC, but it is also widely used for swinging and stuff like voyeur.

Your best bet is probably clarifying that aspect in the description of the novel.

I don't touch ntr, but so long as the characters are all fine with it then I don't think ntr fits.

It has got to be cheating/character forcing others out of relationships to be with them instead, not having lots of sex... right?

I don’t even think this count as Netorase, it’s just open relationships. For the most puritan, it may tangentially hit the NTR border.

However I think that NTR has to involve the bad feeling that the one suffering feels. If there’s no humiliation/emasculation/mindbreak or even just sadness, it’s not NTR.

I remember reading this a while back.

Kinda 50-50 in your question though.

Netorase (寝取らせ) is a Japanese term that refers to a specific fetish or subgenre in erotic media and relationships. It involves a consensual dynamic where one partner (often the husband or boyfriend) encourages or allows their partner (typically the wife or girlfriend) to have sexual relations with other people, often for voyeuristic or psychological stimulation.

Key Characteristics:

  • Consent is central: The partner is aware of and may even orchestrate the encounters.
  • Emotional complexity: It can explore themes of jealousy, arousal, humiliation, or trust.
  • Distinct from "netorare" (寝取られ): In netorare (NTR), the cheating is typically non-consensual from the viewpoint of the betrayed partner, often leading to feelings of loss and betrayal.

In summary, netorase is consensual partner-sharing, while netorare is non-consensual infidelity, at least from the perspective of the viewer or character being cheated on.

Would you like examples from media or how it’s portrayed differently from similar genres?

I know what netorase is, what I meant is that some close minded people could possibly think that the example could be as bad as NTR.
I don’t even consider this as netorase.

If it is a reverse harem, then just add the harem tag. If your female MC has sex outside the relationship, then it is NTR, not Netorare but actually Netorase.

Incorrect, you are describing Netorare, but within the NTR genre there is also Netorase and Netori.

I wouldn't call it netorase, just like how a smut story with a couple from different ethnicities doesn't have to be considered an 'interracial'. These words (at least in porn) are too deeply linked with sets of fetishes that you can't just say "well, it's that because the word literally says that."

Otherwise, we'll have to endure an 'every story is technically a slice of life' thread once per month on the forum.

(But there's no polyamory tag until now, so you can do whatever you want honestly.)

I have an even spicier take: "All slice of life is boring." Miss me with that grocery store arc and the walking home from school scene.

I definitely would call MC being in a relationship and sleeping with someone outside that relationship Netorase, I'm not stretching the definition; that's literally what it is. Unless, of course, the other person/people in the relationship get upset and the relationship is at risk (becoming Netorare or Netori).

I don't think it's NTR. To me, NTR is less about affairs and more about the emotional response of the characters towards the affairs. Indulging in that emotional response in some way is what makes something NTR.

If the characters see sex outside of an established relationship as normal, then it isn't really NTR. It's not cheating if no one's feeling cheated.

It's basically an open relationship type deal.

All slice of life is boring
Clearly you haven't watched 3-gatsu no Lion.

So if the cuckold is okay with it, then he isn't a cuckold according to you. That's a really slippery slope. Good luck with whatever inspired you to feel this way. LOL

I don't know if you're baiting or if you're just being obtuse.

An open relationship, which seems to be what OP describes, isn't cuckolding. Cuckolding is typically one-sided and involves what at least one side of the relationship views as infidelity. If the parties involved in the relationship are aware of what's going on, consent to it, and don't view it as cheating, then it isn't cheating. No one's getting cuckolded.

And good luck with what exactly? A slippery slope to what? You're just saying shit, man.
