WN is a really way to build a reader base. The first novel might not have a lot of comments, and depending on the type of novels, you will get immature readers, but they are everywhere, not just on WN. Because of the type of novel I write, most of the readers on WN and SH are quite nice, but SH is more active in terms of comments, but more WN readers will give PS.
The authors I know on WN will license away their novel for $400, which I can understand. 99% of the stories aren't publishable anyway, so what's the point in keeping the copyright? They are throwable stories meant to establish a reader base and to improve their writing. The chance of a novel becoming big is like winning the lottery, so why bother keeping a copyright that maybe a dozen people will ever pay for it?
I chose not to license anything because I don't need the money, and I prefer to keep the copyright for my ego and freedom to do whatever I want. I assume that's the reason why most people keep their copyright. Unless you're at the top level of writing like Cradle and MoL, I don't see the point in keeping the novel solely for making it big.
A lot of writers and readers on WN have an "eastern" mindset; if you work hard to the bone, you will increase your chances to succeed. However, from the "western" perspective, it's toxic and damaging to mental health. It's similar to the "tiger mom" argument. I can't say which is right, but if you can work hard, go for it.
