Imagine you read your favorite writer's book in a pirated website to not waste money and getting inspired by that author, you also start writing and your book gets fairly popular and after some days when you get to that pirated site, you see your novel getting pirated as a hot ranker in that site like ur favorite creator's one and even the patreon exclusive ones got pirated😭

I don't know if I should be happy that my writing is interesting enough that people are actually pirating it even from my patreon, or I should be sad about losing hundreds of potential exclusive readers😵💫

I contacted the site like 2 days ago and they haven't even replied yet🫥

I guess most of you might know which site it is but I'm not gonna reveal this book in this account -_-

Though I'm pretty good with the ratings but there goes my potential readership😶

As an author i have also encountered this.

The best way about thinking about it is, that there are 4 types of customers. Those that read your publicly available chapters and stop. Those that read even the pirated Chapters because they cannot afford to pay you. Then there are those that Pirate because they don't want to pay. Then there are those who want to read your books and are willing to pay.

Unfortunately, there are only two groups here you can cater to. those who want to read but cannot afford to by lowering the prices. And those that are willing to pay. Those who read pirated are never going to pay regardless so you are actually not losing customers. In fact, they might word of mouth more people to read your books and help you that way.

At the end of the day, It SUCKS ASS seeing your work pirated. But there is only so much you can do to counter it and unfortunately those who solely pirate, will NEVER be paying you for your work. So don't even think of them as potential customers

This is why you set up Privileges, these are paywalled chapters behind the app, so the pirate site bots can't copy and paste them from the browser page anymore, and they remain as true premium content for payers only. Try to add as many chapters in privilege as possible (the max of 50).

I'm now afraid that I might get sued by the pirate for copying my work that they stole and losing(since I'm broke).

I don't know if it's the same in other countries, but in France as long as you have the proof of date, you are safe. (Meaning : as long as you have a version of your draft that dates from earlier than the pirate website)

Because of that, some authors send themselves their own novels as soon as they finish it, in a priority letter (with the stamp and the date on it), don't open it, and just keep it on their shelves until the day they need the proof of date

You can also send any text you have the the French Academy of Letters, which will record it as your work. If you do that, with proof you have written it, you are immediately a winner in any copyright battle (but the process is annoying)

More simple : Do you have a file on your computer with your story, that dates from the time you created it ? Like, when you right click and go to properties, is the date earlier than the publish date of the pirate website ? Then it's alright, you will win in a court battle anyway

I can't freaking stand all of the websites pirating my story :blob_cringe: it drives me absolutely crazy. There's like nothing I can do without getting a lawyer to file DMCA things and since most are hosted internationally, the most they can do is take it off of Google Search :blob_teary: it's not fair fr.

BUT I've been hiding little things in my chapters to try to get people to read on ScribbleHub :blob_evil: it turns out their bots can't repost images from my chapters, so I write things like (if you can't see this map, you are probably not reading on ScribbleHub) and then people come to the right place :blob_cookie: I also had a chapter call out people pirating in a 4th wall break which was pretty fun to write lol

You should feel both. Mixed feelings are completely valid. Just remember to also strike with an iron fist if possible because it is also completely valid to act on self-interest. That being said, if karma is a bridge, I'm jumping off.

Meh, put your donation link in your chapters. For the most part the pirate sites don't do basic checks, so your links will show up to the readers willing to pay.

Also, most are Chinese owned. China has their "Great Firewall" which blocks certain phrases.... use this info as you will.

I sometimes do this to see what comes up if I search my novel.

The results? Other novels with similar names to mine appear. Mine doesn't appear. At all.

yo, may i ask you a question? I want to start reading your Reborn As A Ghost: Time To Build My Undead Army! (A LitRPG Monster Evolution Story) but Im a little unsure if it fits my taste. I saw the harem tag, but I would be interested to know if it is reverse harem, or yuri harem.
