I think I've done this decently. Even had people get upset because the MC failed. It's funny because it's a SoL where the stakes haven't been high, but I've still done it emotionally.

I think what could make novels here better even if they are SoL isekai is adding small elements of this. It doesn't need to be suffer porn, but failing at something definitely makes the character more relatable.

I think authors are afraid of doing so from fear of readers, but some reader will hate what you write no matter what.

It's all a matter of audience, really. It's just that balance where a character can still be competent while having elements that show vulnerability.

As said, relatable by itself is overrated. All about trying to be both at the same time.

Ah yeah, I didn’t mean that they all have to be relatable. When thinking about it, it's more about the story’s stakes. Even in SoL there are some relationship stakes. Showing consequences is the main thing. My MC did something they shouldn't have and paid a price.
