I wasn't able to find any info on this, but is non-fiction allowed here on SH?
I was hoping to launch something soon and noticed there are no tags, no genres, and no guidelines mentions of it.
Obviously there are unspoken rules that go with the genre, but I just want to know if it's the kind of thing that would ban a book if they tried it here.

Here you have everything you need to know about allowed/disallowed content on SH;
Yes, I have read this before coming here. Since non-fiction is never mentioned in this guideline, I may assume it is allowed, though having no tag for it begs the question for why it does not exist in the book creator/editor.

You can always ask for the tag to be added here;

But non-fiction... Are you planing to write real-world historically accurate story or something?

Yes. I am planning to launch a project that would require me to, for a lack of better term, report on various findings and stories of occultism themes. Instead of restating these 'allegedly' true stories, I want to also expand on the mysteries linked to them. It would involve a lot of contacts as well as PII redactions, though it is worth it to me.

If you frame it appropriately, like a character detailing their findings or hypothetical stories, then sure. Do note the guidelines prohibit anything that is not a story.

I think it has no tags because it's extremely rare to write something like that in a story format; from what I've seen most people, when they write about such topics, prefer to make their own blogs.

What I'm preparing would closely resemble a series of disconnected stories (with detailed breakdowns about them) ~ though with a common goal and theme ending each segment. When all put together, I still think it would qualify as an approved work. The stories will be 1:1 based on what other real life people have reported or claimed; thus not based in fiction.

I did consider doing this as a blog, but I didn't want the hassle of buying a domain, setting up and running the entire website, plus many other elements I tried to learn and failed to learn regarding blogging in the past. Maybe it has changed between 2015 and 2025; haven't looked deep into it since ten years ago. [Perhaps I don't understand how blogging works].

Point is; I do classify the project as a story; it should still fall under approved.

I know someone who published a "non-fiction role-playing game" (The Unexplained) based on paranormal investigations (even attended some ghost hunts with the real group that the Ghost Hunters show started out belonging to and sometimes calls in for back-up on investigations). It's a difficult category to work with, essentially "cryptid hunting as non-fiction." I'm not sure that this would be the best site for it (especially framed as non-fiction), but good luck with it.

Come to think of it, a much better platform would be on SubStack - serialized non-fiction and fiction are both welcomed there (and even occasionally monetized).

I'm not sure either, about SubStack anyway, but it is worth a shot to look into it.
I think I am at least going to try it here on SH as well

Ooh, non-fiction. I'd like to read some biographies of less than famous people.

You won't be able to do so here.

I think that someone could make an argument that accounts of their D&D night might count as non-fiction. Yeah, the campaign actually happened, but if it is not a real world and the DM is not writing all his players, but accurately portraying how things went is it fiction?

Heck, I know the author of "The first non-fiction role-playing game" (called The Unexplained) - it's based on the various ghost hunter/cryptid hunter shows, assumes that everything from folklore has at least a basis in truth, and is more focused on the methodology and devices those groups use than more traditional horror/supernatural games.

Speaking of which, I've decided I'm just gonna release the project anyway. It's only 2 chapters, stuck in stasis due to real life issues, but I figure releasing what I worked on and letting it collect a little dust is still better than not releasing it ever. What if something happens and I go away? Wasted time and research.
