So I recently just got my story out of a mental health induced unannounced hiatus and it has me thinking-

How often do yall have random hiatuses? How long do they last and do you normally make an effort to explain the hiatus or do you just go silent for a while? Also as readers, how do you usually react to hiatuses?

I know for myself I often cant bring myself to say anything about the hiatus until its over, either because im back to writing or because ive decided I have to drop the story. When they come up, they usually dont last shorter than a month as a month seems to be the average time it takes for me to get out of a mental funk. Finally, as a reader it usually sucks when a hiatus starts but I dont ever fully drop a story until it hits maybe the second or third month of a hiatus.

As a writer noone cared to ask so I never explained lol.
As a reader, I would have preferred to wait longer to read something if I knew the story would go on hiatus.

That's true enough. It used to be a problem for me but I don't read unfinished works anymore. Or, unfinished serialized works where one MC continues into another book. I really mean book and not arc. So when I see novels that go on hiatus, I tend to be pessimistic now and continue to assume that it's dropped until proven otherwise.

Just an afterthought. I think this thread should be in Author General and not Artist General.

I haven't reached a level of popularity where people expect my works so I'm just gonna... sit here and... watch.

Yeah... this is fun.

I had 3 unannounced hiatuses, and tbh it doesn't really matter because, Sh doesn't have the sheer click rate NU or other sites may have just yet. Also the readers on SH are pretty reserved, I saw next to no comments on my first work so its easier to abandon readers that don't really contribute much actively. I only explain hiatuses when I feel guilty of abandoning my readers. I did so my first time and after getting no response on that post I realized the readers just move on if they're casuals or stick around if they like the story regardless of explanations.

Pretty frequently these days, as I'm balancing a writing career with wanting a career in artificial intelligence.

But like, my desire to get into AI, is also what is paradoxically completely boring me about Science Fiction.

Wow, i feel weird saying this, but I actually kind of respect Tapas.io's selections these days. I was kind of wandering a little bit when this one guy kept publishing chapters about his "get rich quick" scheme, and made every chapter for pay.

^ This is is why I absolutely hate "businesses can do whatever they want" types.

My hiatus is my novel called psykers that I made and improve on but having alot of issues because of.

1.It because of alot of issues trying to find time to write it cause I do better on keyboard and mouse.

2.Planing and editing and all that other biz to make your story just great cause after chapter 3 I'm done because I just want to experiment with other shit to polish my other novel or manga series or whatever a few years down the line.

3.writers knowledge block because you don't know how to write it.

4.Irl things and my own laziness.

5.no active comments down below that don't affect me In the slightest.

6.some level of Porn addiction that affects my sleep cause of not having someone to love in girl and alot stress from my family in girl

Sorry that last part wasn't necessary but it felt a little bit better for me to say that in 1:30 am cause you're the guys that I care about even though you take jabs at like your Mike Tyson beating the living shit out of me.

I go into hiding every few weeks. It's hard to be on all the time and I need to recharge.
