I honestly think that people should care more about this engine. A few days ago, they released the early access version of the software and a demo of it on their YT channel, it was mind-blowing. Holy shit, we're actually in the future!

I can't believe how photo-realistic it looks. And it's not even a piece of software that only AAA game companies could use, even normal people could use it. The uncanny valley of how real it looks makes me think that we're coming really close to a real life SAO game. And with Elon Musk's Neuralink coming into the picture, that's like every gamer's wet dream coming true.

Don't even get me started on the Nanites and Lumen feature of Unreal Engine 5, as they both are fucking awesome when applied to the game's world. I've watched their demo, and the amount of photo-realism that is applied, would make you think that it IS from real life.

The craziest part of it is the fact that it's not even the finished product! I think more people should actually know of this, because it's an actual revolutionary piece of software.

I don't like being a pessimist but, as pretty as high-end AAA game might look in the UE5. The average person won't be able to do shit with it.

If you gave UE5 to the average aspiring indie dev, at most you'll end up with a game that looks like it was made for the Play Station 2.

As Vicky said- engine itself doesn't make the game, at this point the technical difficulty of making games of this fdidelity is miniscule in comparison to costs of hiring artists

This thread reminds me of that MMO scam.

Created using UE, raised 10k on Kickstarter which is one of the worst places for worst things that don't need to be made. Most of the assets were UE pre-assets, low-poly trees, and unrealistic features that are cliche. They made a mess in UE—that has the best efficiency to learn and use... you know, we all agree on the same sentiment. UE may be good, but not anyone is entitled enough to make great games out of it.

Realistic, huh? Are we gonna have our next Third Life?

Man why the fuck would you play a game for being life like. I want want life like. I live life! I play games to escape it. Give me more big tiddy anime bitches. Give me my spikey haired pretty boys.

Fuck realism.

Unless it's for 3d cgi porn. Then it's okay. Studio FOW, looking at you here. Yall do wonders.

Normal people could use it? That's insane man! Did you even ever bother try it yourself? Lemme give you some pointers why people especially indie game developer try avoiding it (plus some friendly comparison with Unity):

1. Unreal is a big boy, too damn big boy. The game engine itself took at least 12GB, 12 whole GB. It took me several days to download it while Unity at most would be 5 GB unless you add extra stuff. The reason it is so big is because of the templates the game engine offered. Once you create the game, the engine itself is not so big, unfortunately you cannot pick or limit what template to download, you must download Unreal as whole while Unity allow you to pick what you need.

2. Unreal will burn. Unreal will definitely burn not so high spec device, and laptop will be the main victim. Some people cannot affort for deskop because of the electricity bill and the lack of space which makes us choosing smaller device such as laptop. And laptop definitely cannot handle Unreal Engine, heck even gaming laptop won't last. While Unity would last 1.5 hours when my laptop offline, Unreal would only last for 25 minutes. ONLY 25 damn minutes and my laptop's battery would die. Using it while charging is definitely a no-no, imagine the overheat it might cause. Unreal is definitely made for deskop not laptop which is one of main cause for some to dodge it like a plague. What I totally didn't expect at first from Unreal is that the engine is pretty heavy on CPU consumtion which is the cause of the burn.

3. The game will be huge. The games made with Unreal will definitely huge even if it's just an empty project. If your game is soo huge while the content is not much, people might complain. Not only that it would need mid to high spec device to play the game properly. Screw realistic graphic if you cannot enjoy it without lagging. One of main reason why Unreal is used by bigger companies and avoided by many indie developer. And their games are moslikely not potato friendly and only mean for gamers with some good money. While reducing the size and graphic is possible, that fell on the realm of advance coding not something amateur could do willy-nally.

4. 3D world ahoy. For 3D only, while you can create 2D games with Unreal, it fell hard in comparison against Unity. Unity offered much more features for 2D. Unity's 2D rigidbody and 2D lighting won by lanslide! Pretty much why indie game developer picks Unity over Unreal. And if you only want specific game types such as RPG, RPG maker is the easiest one (and probably the least flexible one, plugin wrecks. Ahoy!)

Welp, those are the main reason why people avoid Unreal. At least from my personal experience.

I'll be honest with you, after the 300th Steam Greenlight™ game with 100% motion blur and Ray Traced glare on every reflective surface, I don't really care much for the new engine anymore.

Seriously, we'll end up with every GTA V graphics mod ever; wet roads everywhere with an emphasis on realism without consideration for artstyle/aesthetic.

We haven't even mentioned gameplay yet.

That is what assets are for. Of course since many assets are paid, most indie probably won't go for them and will make simple ones or use the free ones. So it is a matter of what kind of assets they include for free or what kind of assets are available for free.

That said, overall, there are a lot of tools out there that make quality assets with little effort. Like Poser that lets you create characters.

The only real reason why indy developers tend to avoid Unreal Engine vs Unity is 2 things:
a) Most indy games are 2D, not 3D.
b) You can code unity in javascript (While recently there is a 3rd party plugin that brings javascript support to unity, it isn't official)

As for your other reasons:
a) 5GB or 12GB makes no real difference. You aren't downloading a gaming engine every day. For me, both unity and unreal downloaded in less than an hour.
b) I've played plenty of games on my laptop made with Unreal, so not sure what you mean. Unreal engine is more efficient than Unity for 3d, but the typical Unreal game tends to be higher quality. So of course it would use more resources and have larger sizes.

I guess, you make point there. But, but my main point is that Unreal Engine editor is not suitable for laptop mostly because of its tendency to overheat. While you could probably solve it to some extend with cooling vacuum, but deskop is still better.

Unreal Engine 5 is good but made for triple AAA titles. Gamemaker Studio, Unity or even Unreal Engine 3 or 4 would work fine for indie studios.
