I debated on making this a poll but changed my mind at the last minute. The title is almost clickbait because what I really wanted to find out is if any of you were ever tempted to write a genre that is outside of your comfort zone? For me, I'm more comfortable writing about romance fantasy and balk at writing anything modern day though I do want to write one someday.

If any of you want to write outside the genre you're used to writing in, what genre would it be?

Well, I have not been writing for long. But doing drama of chapter 9 in my own novel took me around two days for a measly 1300 words or so.

For me it's horror. I have never really tried to write scary fiction and I am eager to try it.
For some reason, I laughed coz I can imagine myself trying to write horror. I'd probably be freaking myself out and trying very hard to laugh it off. Awkward laughter is a great ice breaker for me.

I've tried a lot of things. I think slice of life is probably the thing I have the least ability in and the thing I have the most interest in doing well.

My forever hiatus novel theme is genre change. I fear the horror and mystery arc.

Also fear comedy & tragedy cause i'm not sure if i can influence reader's emotions

Also chinese genre because i'm not really sure about their differences. Or the power levels. Or the culture.

Do you mean the cultivation novels and the transmigration ones? Chinese novels have a lot of crazy genres.

I perhaps often intended to write fantasy but actually end up with sci-fi, horror, comedy, romance... but never fantasy. It's still a weird phenomena for me even until today. And I write real weird, like this post.

Ooooh I'd love to write sci-fi but don't know how to. Got some ideas but I get discouraged just thinking about technical terms. My love for mecha cyberpunk, and dystopic anime makes me think of a lot of stories but I don't feel like I'm at a place I can do my ideas justice.

From what I experienced and read myself I try to keep in those specifciations. I don't like the idea of writing something that I don't know about. This is where the movie 'Becoming Jane' comes into account. People will know! Sadly, the best a writer can do is what they know and how much they know. That is why my stories aren't based upon intellect so much and other aspects like horror, as I'm not good with horror.
Expand on what u know!! Give the best of that what u know!! Make it so that of what u don't know so much of doesn't matter!!

That's it....

I mean NU genres; Wuxia, Xianxia, Xuanhuan. There's some explanations on this but i'm more vonfused about cultivation power level. Usually the explanation came down to: it's varies from novel to novel

I mean, I'm an amateur writer at all, but I prefer doing action and thriller. The kind of thriller that puts the audience at the edge of their seats, waiting for the next thing that's gonna happen. If you sucessfully do that, then you're a really good writer.

My hardest genres are usually historical fiction and Mystery. It's hard to write a story based in history if you don't know the history and the causation of it that well and Mystery is hard for me, because you have to show the audience enough, but not enough to ruin the suspense, it's not something that I can easily do.

fantasy, a bit of action, a bit of adventure, a bit of comedy...
My 3rd novel (currently planning to start it after I finish my current two novels) will be quite outside my comfort zone in genre, main character and pretty much everything. I'll have to do a lot of research before I start it, probably.

...sounds like cliffhanger:blobspearpeek:

I guess, but what I meant is the kind of thriller that the Game of Thrones has. The thrill of who's gonna die next? You know, that's the kind of write I aspire to be.

I desperately wish I was able to write fantasy. I want to create worlds and characters and lore. Plus, fantasy is hands-down my favorite genre to read.

Whenever I write though, my inner snark eventually claws its way out and turns everything into some comedic satire. Woe is the author who cannot manage to write what she loves to read.
