Well, uh, look at the title. I feel like I've already asked this though. :sweating_profusely:

Personally, I feel it is an overblown issue in fiction when others are forced to do it out of necessity and/or the person is already dead. Like, that's the hill you die on? If I needed to, or others needed to, due to starvation, then om nom nom. *shrugs* But to others it is a hard, rock-solid line worse than the majority of evil deeds.

Sure... hot topic much. But I'm interested!🤩

Am I just crazy?

I do not promote the act of cannibalism. It often, perhaps normally, comes with a whole host of crimes. There is a reason it is a taboo, because murder and such abominable things come right with it.

Huh, the chapter I'm reading now asked the exact same question-

Well, whatever. You've definitely asked this question before, and I think my answer hasn't changed. Eating (once) living things is gross. Not plants, not animals, not people. It's all gross and nasty. If you need to do it to survive, then I guess that's a choice between the lesser of two evils. It's all unpleasant.

This is why plants (with some exceptions) are the highest lifeform. No need to kill and eat innocent creatures.

Personally, I think that preserving life comes first. If there is no need for it then it’s a terrible thing to desecrate someone’s corpse. But if you need to eat human flesh to survive then I don’t have any problem with that. And no its not crazy to value life over a taboo.

It’s probably the most intense form of desecration of a body short of necrophilia. The most absolute form of turning another human into an object to serve your own needs. It’s absolutely disgusting, and taboo in a lot of cultures. Often it has extra mythological baggage tacked on.

That said, if absolutely necessary I feel like it is justified irl. Just don’t expect people to *not* judge you for it, kinda like onlyfans, but moreso.

In fantasy settings where there’s a mystical weight to things, it’s the kind of thing that probably should be *significant* because there’s such an elevated level of emotional and cultural baggage. It’s perfectly reasonable to become a little monstrous and inhuman when you consume another person, even under duress. If you make a habit of it, or do it when you have other options? Sounds like a great way to dive off the slippery slope.

It gets kinda fuzzy when there’s a ritual to it. Like, idk, eating the heart of your enemy to gain his strength. That’s still kinda squicky, but it *feels* better because it’s at least treating the cannibalism as significant, and the individual traits of the person being eaten as important.

Only when it is needed and other option is out.
Eating it so you don't die out of starvation even after searching for food for days on end and you gave it your all but thats how I feel.

I knew I must have!
I find it concerning that I philosophize in my head about cannibalism so much that I'm asking this question again... :sweating_profusely:

And what a coincidence! That's funny!

Depends on the situation and way its being used at least when it comes to writing or story telling.
IRL I would say near unforgivable unless you're forced but in writing I would say it would depend on the character personality and overall outlook on life as well as the current circumstances surrounding it.
I love Tokyo Ghoul despite the obvious cannibalism simply because it feels more natural and feels justified in the story, it also very edgy and I was in middle school when I first watched it.
I could not stand AOT though despite being the same when it comes to this. I can't even name why since I only watched 10 episodes and browsed the fandom page for the rest of the info

I think my biggest problem is when it gets to the same extent or closer to Hannibal Lector where the item in front of them becomes completely unrecognizable to the reader or viewer as human despite knowing fully what it is through prior knowledge.

Funny thing about cannibalism. Most cultures that cross that line continue doing it even when they are no longer super desperate or close to starvation. They could receive tons of food in aid or have successful farming, and they'll keep doing it.

The dead can't sue you (unless you're in murrica), so I'd rather save lifes with bad meat than meet death.

But I suppose human would taste really bad, so I'll refrain from eating it otherwise
