When do word counts update?

I've been updating chapters daily, with all the chapters being around 3k words. However, the total word count of the story itself and even the word count on my profile seems to be stuck at 3k. It should be close to 8.5-9k, though. That's how much is on the thing at the moment.

Is it something like they get updated once in a while, or is it some kind of bug?

Does seem like it. Both of them have hundreds of views and a couple of favorites too. But the word count only shows the stats for the first chapter.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I didn't see my own word counts go up until I released the section. I typically schedule my parts and noticed that the word count only went up after release. So if any of your are scheduled, that might explain it. Good luck and I hope this helped at least a tiny bit.

Just saw this, lmao. But yeah, I figured it out.
So, essentially I keep chapters scheduled with a single period as the chapter content to keep a deadline for myself. When the chapter goes live, for some reason, it only adds the 1 word of that period to the count. Idk why it happens. I go and update the chapter in editing once and that fixes the word count!

Many things - like ratings, for example - update in roughly 24 hours cycles.

Some effects you see immediately, comments and likes, for example, but others, like overall story statistics, take time. Some are approval pending, but words count isn't one.

I think this section is always 24 hours old, by design.

Depends on the author. The average is 2~3k, but some stories have 10k+ and some have 500. Your choice, tbh.

Not really. And even if that were the norm, don't let it matter. Some of my chapter go down to 2k words while some go to 4-4.5k. Make them as long or as short as they need to be.
Let your main focus be if the pacing of the chapter is right or not. A well-paced novella is miles better than an abysmally paced epic.
