It is simply that bullying (light-bullying) is often an effective way to get the point across, whether you like it or not. In this case, Hoshino was made the butt of a joke for him to reflect on his behavior, and although I was hoping he would stand up for himself (by which I don't mean to be toxic), he did not in the end.

I'm moved by your endless compassion for @Hoshino. Taking a stand for him not only shows greatness of character but also an indomitable bravery. It's a relief that he gained a new friend who can help him feel less lonely and bring the best out of him.
