For those that don't know, Visual Novels are those chinese powerpoint pornos with choices as the only player agency. I mean are something like a crossbreed of anime and manga. A few of the biggest and best animes were previously VNs, so it might be cool to check them out.

Aaaaaanyway. For those that know what VNs are, have you ever thought about making your own? While it does mean more work as in looking up basic coding and "borrowing" art from somehwere there's a lot of cool things that can be done from a writing perspective.
Ever thought "I wanna do this, but that also sounds really great" or "maybe waifubando B as sole love interest would have been interesting as well"? In Visual Novels you could do all of it (as long as you write it and give it a choice option).
And even a group of people without any experience can do some seriouls great stuff. Look up "Katawa Shoujo" for example.

So yeah, ever thought about it? And if yes, why?

I've thought about making my own animation/VN but they need so much time... Even the WebToon I'm working on takes a lot of time...

Certainly do, especially after watching a video about how to make a game with renpy, the urge to make a dating sim grows stronger. Though unfortunately, I don't have a PC to actually make use of the knowledge.

It was one of my childhood dreams to be a game developer, so yeah. That's why I'm in midst of learning art the past few weeks, I want to be able to draw booba myself.

Yep! A lot of the stories I used to write will work much better as comics/manga and visual novels. In fact, even stories that don't have multiple different choices to make can work better as visual novels, especially horror. Books can be good at psychological horror but, if you add a lot of good pictures and such, it really makes it so much better.

Unfortunately, while I am all for making one, I am just beginning to learn how to code, am not the best at making music, and am kinda bad at drawing. I can make plenty of good stories if I could make a visual novel and, if anyone wants help with making one, I would be all for it. Maybe in the future, I can make one on my own.

what the hell? what kinda of definition is that? chineese? for real? then why does wikipedia-sensei disagree?

-------------------
A visual novel (Japanese: ビジュアルノベル, Hepburn: bijuaru noberu), often abbreviated as VN, is an interactive fiction video game genre, featuring text-based story with narrative style of literature and interactivity aided by static or sprite-based visuals, most often using anime-style art or occasionally live-action stills As the name suggests, they resemble mixed-media novels.

Visual novels originated in and are especially prevalent in Japan, where they made up nearly 70% of the PC game titles released in 2006
---------------------

so now, that I did my duty as a good netizen, let me answer you.

A Visual Novel, huh? well, yeah, I had some thoughts about, but sadly just like a lot of sad people on SmutHub, I too not only lack resources, knowledge, and time, but I also lack Talent.

I probably could learn it. Just don’t know the software, and the art will be disgusting.

Afaik there are some Chinese powerpoint porn game communities, which ig Bearly is referring to. But yes, most of the professionally published VNs I know are from Japanese companies.

But to answer the question: I actually started working on a framework way back when. Didn't get much further than sprite and text display, but it was a fun project.

Any of the actual GOOD visual novels involve entire teams working on them. There have been a few good western VNs made by independent teams, but the Eastern variety which actually get adapted to anime (as mentioned in the OP) are actually made by professional teams at well-funded studios. (Such as Type Moon for the Fate// series.)

No. I would need art and sound/music.

Coding, writing, etc is no problem. That's done in a minute.
But getting a million sprites and fitting music is either really costly or really time-consuming.

So the only way would be an indie team and let's say, most of those experiences suck.
"I want to make a light novel" kinda became the "I want to make an MMORPG" from 10 years ago...
(Such as Type Moon for the Fate// series.)
Although a lot of them - just like Type Moon - start out as "indie projects" that turn into real studios after they had some success.

That said, due to the different work approach (and standing of anime overall), there is also a bit of a different approach to "indie studios" over there. Actually had the pleasure to talk with some circles a few years back and a lot of them are better organized than western indie studios with actual fundings...

That requires tremendous artistic ability to... art. I can't art, so I haven't considered it. I can write and code, though, but that's not enough.

I wouldn't "borrow" art from somewhere. I'd actually commission stuff for it.
My attention is already tied up with other things at the moment, though.

Visual novel requires art which I don't have and is no longer just "Chinese PowerPoint porno" infact they are japanese, also the west have been used ALOT renpy engine to make cash grabs in outrageous amount just like rpgm. So to solve the issue with art people shamelessly use Honey select screenshots and even bits of animations, is pathetic and mediocre.
Also it requires coding which I barely know anything

You would only need art, unless you want to make it into a game. Then you need everything else. But there are plenty of visual novels with only a few moments of art and written everything else.

I am currently trying to make my second work in the making into such a thing as that. c: If it works is yet to be seen though. I love Otome games. So, I grew up loving visual novels.

But a VN is a game? Music and sound are a big part of good VNs because they can set the mood without the need for 20 more lines of exposition...

Thought about it.

But I realized I will need so many art assets, more than I can produce (I don't want to just grab pictures from Google unless I'm making use of actual trademarked characters/content like say characters from Fate or something). I'm also pretty meh at writing dialogue, and I suck at coding, so I just decided to write an LN instead.

My series and a bunch of ideas I never put into pen all work better as an RPG than a VN anyway if we're talking games.

There are VN that are games. c: Others have art with some writing. Basically, all VN are any type of writing that has pictures now and then. OG VNs games only had a few CGS back then. But there are written ones, at least what I have seen. At least in my brain, I see anything with writing and art as a VN. It is what basically makes a VN. But music does add to the mood and setting. Which one could do also without having to code. :blob_melt:

Basically, just write, have a few pics with links to music. As long as you don't sell, it should be fine. <---- Not planning on selling any of her writings.:blob_gift:
