Cowardice is when you are too afraid to take action; pessimism is when you expect the outcome will not favour you.
When you are afraid to take a step forward due to fear of the outcome, it is still cowardice, albeit influenced by pessimism.

I find that a lot of "clever" people tell me they are pessimist or being realistic, but the very core of their being is not based in critical analysis. But rather, they are cowards, with low self-esteem that rather do nothing than try something that might fail.
