The beast, it didn't move, it continued to do what it did to him before. His eyes never glossed over, rolled back, they were pitch black -- Lumps of charcoal. He clenched his teeth, and they broke.

He ran forward, leg flashing between his and others; thousands and insect like. He slammed his blade down, not like a sword, but like a club. Forceful and with no technique, only wanting to smash it. Over and over. Till it was a blood pulp. He dropped to his knees and sobbed.

Kind of makes me think of that story about the guy who got stronger by eating everything.
He could then transform his body into whatever he ate that was organic.
He even stored excess food to use to recover whenever he got injured.

That could potentially have been its title.
I honestly can't remember, though.
And I know there are other stories that use a similar premise of eating to get stronger.
