That is exactly the issue. The engineer is not seen as a nerd in German society. It is a reputable and respected profession. Also we don't have the strange American college system, which helps a lot.
Pretty sure our manufacturing issues have more to do with corporations shipping jobs out and bad trade trade agreements. The idea of, we give countries paper, and they give us cheap goods. Most Americans don’t look down on manufacturing at all.
But well, that’s political stuff. I’m just glad we have one more feather in our cap against Canada.
Most European universities are tuition free. Just the UK and the USA across the Atlantic are strange outliers. Both countries depend on immigration to import specialists. So it doesn't matter as much.
Hmmm... The reason why sports scholarships work is the money the student brings in. For example, a star player helping the team will draw in crowds, selling tickets and merchandise.
As for colleges. Tuition is high in the US because of government backed loans. And you have to remember, technically speaking, the government does not have money. The only money it has is the money it acquires through taxes.
So, let’s say Bill doesn’t go to college, and earns $15 an hour as a mechanic. The government would be taking money from Bill to pay for someone’s college degree in the “free college” scenario. Take out of that whatever you want, but college is not for everyone, and Bill should not have to pay for another persons degree.
