What do you want to read in a story in which the mc fights a horde of monsters?

You can skip suggestions like a good system, not op mc, doom.

E.g: I'd rather have a good antagonist, than a great mc, and a plot that has equal parts action, drama, some slice of life, and adventure.

Oh, after the edit, I understood everything. If we are talking about the game doom, then the doom-esque story must be about bolter porn.

Are you suggesting the enemies retreat when at a disadvantage? That would be a great suggestion, and I would have missed it because of its simplicity.

Well... first we need to examine what "DOOM" truly is about, right? This way, we can think of a good foundation.

DOOM means two things: VIOLENCE and INSANITY. In any doom-esque fiction HELL would be the go-to environment. Unhinged brutality, unrestrained annihilation, absolute power fantasy, and unnatural rage would be the defining factors of the MC.

I don't really see 'slice of life' being a good addition to any 'horde action' fiction, as action would be constant, relentless, and almost permanent. Maybe a few moments of relaxation that would only serve for preparation for the next wave of 'demons'.

Drama is not really a part of DOOM, so it could feel out of place for a reader expecting a 'true DOOM experience' if that's how you market your story. Some revelations can take place, and that would raise the stakes, but regular 'drama' is not that, at least not in the conventional meaning. TENSION would be the right word.

Exessive violence changes people for the worst, which is why doomguy works: he's not a character, he's a vessel for the player.

Taking that into account, we can construct a doom-esque scenario that works as both storytelling and power fantasy.

Doom is one of the strange good stories where the protagonist is one dimensional. He has one goal, one motivation, and doesn't evolve his character over time. I think the reason it's not a bad story is because the protagonist is stuck in the rising action of the story continuously trapped in an eternal struggle, that he enjoys. It's one of a kind that I don't think could be reproduced while also being original, but its worth a try.

While the main character of doom isn't complex the other characters that appear are. That would be you're best entry point. Make elaborate antagonists with thought out plans, and your wrench of an MC just gets bashed against their gears. A world of schemes and you have one no nonsense character cutting through without care, just to pursue his one goal. The only problem I think you'd have with this is avoiding the overpowered trope.

It depends on the target audience and what you plan on adding.
Let's said a demonlord is reborn and the defeated throughout the resurrections are brought back to life.
You can make the local's struggling to survive but a summoned hero or a local should the solution to the issue or multiple people like the mc rising to challenge the issue.
