After being a creep and going through what they hadn't deleted I have reinstalled the OS and the stuttering is gone. Without a doubt it was a virus.

My fucking god. I am loving this Lenovo thinkpad t410 I got from a yardsale. Best $60 I ever spent. Why did the red button for controlling the cursor ever go out of fashion? This thing is great.
