Click the drop down arrow by your username and go to reading list. You can see new updates there. It's sorted alphabetically by default though, so you might want to change it to latest so that new updates show up at the top.

As far as I know, points are just meant to convey forum achievements. Basically shows how active you are on the forums based on how many achievement points you have accumulated. You don;t spend them or anything, just bragging rights.
