Can anyone explain to me how to play D&D?

In DND rolling a 20 does not mean whatever the play character desired just magically happens.

Rolling a nat 20 means the player character performs their desired action at the absolute limit of their abilities. For example, No player can lift a mountain with a nat 20 (unless they found the Mountain Lifting Gauntlets of Strength obviously).

I've had times when my players have rolled a nat 20 on persuasion to get a guard (sometimes a bribe is included). If the guard has absolute and steadfast loyalty and discipline then the 20 is disregarded. I commoner guard might be able to be bribed but an imperial knight guarding the emperor?. Even so, who would accept a bribe from a random group of smelly murderous hobos who for some reason want to sneak into the lords mansion? Not many that's who!

I just wished to say that in my first DND campaign, my character (lvl 1 btw) backhanded a lvl 12 character. I didn't know that they were lvl 12 at the time.
