Demographics (like Shounen, Shoujo, Seinen, and Josei) must be seperated from genre

Pretty sure that demographics are not meant to be genre of the story. It is sole aim of audience in a particular series. It really doesn't affect the matter of the story since genre is relatable to the theme and setting of the story.

My suggestion is to seperate the demographics from genre and have a feature like:

Demographics: (Choose one particularly)
(Just think that this is a selective bar, *referring to the table below*)
Shounen
Shoujo
Seinen
Josei

I think it is fine as is, not much is gained from separating the two, and you can have up to 9 genres anyways, so it's not like you're lacking space.

I do lack space though. I merely used my genre as to describe how the story barely contains on based genres.

You may be overusing genres tbh. Genre is something overarching. Consider shifting some of them to tags
Romance -> Romantic Subplot etc

Edit: You have Mature, Adult, Smut, and Ecchi. You have four genres dedicated to its pornographic qualities. Maybe just condense them down to Adult and Smut and you will have 2 more available tags.

Honestly, I understand where he's coming from. The way this site is set up, it encourages the use of all the genres and tags you can conceivably apply. I would have a lot fewer of each on mine if it weren't for that.

Every genre and tag you apply to your story increases it's exposure as it can appear on a list along side other stories with the same tag people might be searching for. That said, it is true that tags with nearly identical meanings should be minimized.

So, I can understand where he's coming from. He's following the algorythm and trying to get every advantage he can. Still, it can probably be done smarter.

I agree your point about your "edit" statement, but my story does contain smut although I think replacing from Adult to Seinen would be good idea since both of them share the same generalities when it comes to term and purpose. But first, I need some sort of clarification when it comes to difference between Adult and Seinen (probably for western and eastern terminology purposes). By the way, my story doesn't only dedicated to its pornographic qualities, but also the "mature" qualities, generally speaking.

I'm not just trying to get every advantage as I can, but I also try to describe how my story goes to in a particular way based on every genre I got. Plus I planned my story to have tons of worldbuilding since I've prepared the limit of arcs that I got in my story plan.

Mature is similar to Seinen.

Adult is there for porn.

So if I revised the genre placement in Smut only with the exception of Adult, is it still considered to be R-18 labeled?

Both Adult and Smut are for R-18 content, so... For as long as you keep either, it should be fine.

Even if there were to be separate demographics from genres: I would find having them all couched in Japanese language to be a dreadful pain to parse.

I would think that targeting age brackets is mostly useful on background algorithms that serve people through on-site recommendations.

All that said: I’m all about maximization of reach where it’s actually applicable. I’d actually considered choosing ‘fairy tales’ rather than ‘fantasy’ at first, even if it was less effective of a category for people’s interest, because I believed the integrity of the piece was important enough to warrant the choice... but that’s when I found out that ‘fairy tales’ are now a ‘children’s market’, despite their historical propensity for blood, gore, and brutality of the highest order.

Turns out that fairy tales have been co-opted by Disney, and their standard is usually ‘whatever parents would be willing to give to/tell to their children’. After all of that, I then found out fairy tales weren’t even a genre on RRL or Scribble 😅 So all that fuss was for naught 😭 I was disillusioned for no good reason! 😪

At least you won't need to worry about that again! xD

My problem with those genres is it's targeted to a certain audience. I mean, DUH. Let me try to explain...originally, these words (shounen, shoujo, seinen, and josei) are more familiar with manga readers. Then, the popularity of Asian novels boomed so more people do know what they mean or at least vaguely know what they stand for. However, not all writers read Asian novels. True they could look it up since google is only a click away but, if they have no exposure to any Asian work, they'll find themselves confused.

I'm not saying I don't like them. In fact, they're quite useful. More useful than using Young Adult as a genre anyway (especially since YA leans more to the female audience rather than age demographic.)
