Does anyone enjoy escort missions?

Do you enjoy playing escort or defense objectives in games?

So I just got done playing JUST Cause 4.
And I had to ask…

Does anyone enjoy escort missions?
I don’t consider Bioshock infinite to be a full on escort mission because you don’t have to worry about your partner.

Even great games like RE4 have people complaining about the escort portion due to AI.

I remember every game where I had to protect something, and I almost never enjoyed it because it didn’t allow you to cut lose and just go all out.

The only games I enjoyed that had to do with escorting or defending are tower defense games, but those are all about building tons of shit to destroy enemies.

So the question; does anyone actually enjoy escort or defense missions?

I don't like them at all. The person you are escorting is almost always too fast or too slow (Usually too slow) , and you have to keep them alive.

The only escorting mission I remember playing vividly was when I was trying to gather villagers for an iron generation farm in Minecraft.

As far as I remember from when I was playing those kinds of games, I never liked defense and escort missions because they required completely different playstyle from what I usually did. They also require certain damage output and mobility that's often hard to meet when you're just playing for fun, unlike, say, elimiantion missions, where you can take your time and do whatever you want as long as you kill the enemy in the end.

The only escort mission I can remember not absolutely hating was in Ghost recon Future soldier and that was probably because it was an action packed on the rail portion of the mission that only lasted maybe 5 minutes

Well, i always prefer being the one escorted by AI and Bots. Or at least, being in the same carriage as the escorted person.

Like how in GTA, you're the one driving while the homies doing drive by against other enemies like Mission goons, rival gang member, and cops alike.

They're the one protecting you while all you had to do is to drive the car and reach objective.

No need to follow and keep up with AI with shitty walking. You just drive and avoid obstacles, or maybe you're the one doing the drive by.

IDK what I'm writing anymore, it's already 1AM. I just get off the train journey several hours ago, I can't sleep due to both insomnia and my stomach is too full after eating chicken rice bowl during a very late dinner at 11PM.

Reading this thread reminds me of my younger days when I got tired of escorting mission in other games as I usually just drop them when my escort-like mission start to okay and I failed due to my patience waning, and then i just open YouTube, and watch other people playing the shitty game for me while I downloaded some save-game that were made after those escort missions.

Depends on the genre, but generally, escort missions suck because of a rather dumb AI. If it's turn by turn and you get to control the escorted party, it can be fun though.

XCOM had rescue missions (turning to escort on the "GTFO" phase) and they were fun, I'm pretty sure Shadowrun would work well with escort missions as well.

Defense missions? I don't really like them in strategy games (be alive after X minutes/turns) because they're designed to be imbalanced against you and there's nothing you can do but bear the assault.

Yeah, they're so awesome!!! I get to follow this NPC around who has a slower walkspeed than my own and if he dies during the 30-minute-long route, I get to start all over again from the beginning! Epic gameplay experience.

On a serious note, no.

Eh... It depends.

The most annoying/easiest escort mission (Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana) I played had a bizarre quirk where if you pulled to far ahead of the escort target, they would just... stop and wait.
That meant you could rush ahead, clear all the threats, and come back to pick them up. But... they also walked at half the players minimum movement speed...

A second one (CrossCode) that wasn't so bad was essenitally just 3 point defense challenges chained together. Defend point 1 until the timer runs out, move to point 2, defend it, etc. There were no attacks while actually moving.
But... honestly, most of it was just CrossCode being a great game with excellent enemy design, so you were too busy having fun in combat to really notice the escort aspect of the quest...

In general, I don't mind them if the escort target actually contributes something to the fight.
But most of the time, they don't, and are nothing more than flightless waddling ducks (can't be "sitting ducks" since, well, they are at least moving...)

I rarely play games with actual escorting missions (I can still understand the absolute agony behind them tho), but much worse for me personally are defense missions.
I swear, I can work on a strategy to defeat a boss for literal days but if I fail at a defense mission more than thrice I have to stop playing because I get so frustrated that the game just isn't fun for me anymore.

Escort missions can be fun in some games you know , there was this game I used to play where i gathered up a bunch of NPCs by escort quests and went to fight an annoying boss though I think I got punishments for the death of the NPCs (lowering the reputation , increasing of evil alignment, removing some quests etc)but i didn't really care.

what kind of escort are we talkin?
The ones of the night😏
