Recommendations Genetic Engineer Mc?

I have always wanted a mc that is a really smart genetic scientist that can mess with dna and stuff like that. (I know nothing about the subject lol) Something like leylin from WMW in that bit where he creates bugs and those piranahs. So, does anyone have a novel where the mc:

1. Messes around with the dna of creatures to make themself stronger or create a super powerful creature
2. Is really smart and composed

It can be a fantasy magic world or a super high tech sci-fi, Just no harems please. Also any novels where mc is a monster and evolves their body with new organs and stuff like Chrysalis fits what I need too. Thanks :D
