I'm going to add a plug for Wonderdraft
I've played with several map-generation software packages over the years and there are pros and cons to each.
Inkarnate is quite quick to get the hang of and makes pretty maps. It's great if you're starting out. However, do be mindful that you will have to pay for a subscription if you plan to use the map in a project that might earn you money. The free maps are only for free things.
Azgaar's free Fantasy Map Generator is powerful and, for the likes of me, overwhelming. I think you could make amazing maps with it, and it could do a lot to help shape a realistic world to write in. However, I've tried several times and I get too caught up in the detail, which just takes me away from writing.
So, Wonderdraft is not free, but I also didn't think it was overly expensive since it's a one-off purchase, and then you get the updates free, plus there are a bunch of free resources (extra symbols you can import). The thing that really won me over with Wonderdraft was that I could design my whole world. And then, because most of my story will take place in a certain region, I was able to re-render a zoomed-in section of the world, which will maintain consistency across maps if I were to generate a bunch of zoomed-in sections, which I may do as my characters journey. You just pick a section to zoom-in on and it recreates it in a new file so the resolution remains excellent.
An example world is here:
Guardians & Guides World Map with an accompanying zoom (
Epmahia Zoom).
Now, I think I need to go back and make edits to that world (I think it needs a southern snowy continent... but, perhaps not. I suppose the Earth hasn't always had one), and I need to add some details to the Zoomed region. But these were generated from my first real play with the software, so no doubt I have a lot to learn.
Anyway, another one to add to your list...
