I want to create a map (picture) of my current fantasy world. Do you guys have resource or references?
btw if you want you can read my work
Elven Lies I - Books of Fate
You can use Inkarnate. There's a free option, and the tools are enough to make a good map.

Check out mine.

I used this map generator then I modify the rest in photoshop. If I have enough time and motivation, I could even do my own txt file with desired random names for places and whatnot.

Here is how it turned out for me, there are tons of options in there for how you want to generate it:

There are a lot of videos on youtube on making fantasy maps. Simply searching that in youtube will probably help get you started.

This series specifically is a good starting point:

If you want help on making a realistic fantasy map, where the geography makes sense, I recommend the channel Artifexian, https://www.youtube.com/@Artifexian he makes really good in depth videos on the topic. I think he also has some tutorials on using the map making software Gplates.

I'm going to add a plug for Wonderdraft

I've played with several map-generation software packages over the years and there are pros and cons to each.

Inkarnate is quite quick to get the hang of and makes pretty maps. It's great if you're starting out. However, do be mindful that you will have to pay for a subscription if you plan to use the map in a project that might earn you money. The free maps are only for free things.

Azgaar's free Fantasy Map Generator is powerful and, for the likes of me, overwhelming. I think you could make amazing maps with it, and it could do a lot to help shape a realistic world to write in. However, I've tried several times and I get too caught up in the detail, which just takes me away from writing.

So, Wonderdraft is not free, but I also didn't think it was overly expensive since it's a one-off purchase, and then you get the updates free, plus there are a bunch of free resources (extra symbols you can import). The thing that really won me over with Wonderdraft was that I could design my whole world. And then, because most of my story will take place in a certain region, I was able to re-render a zoomed-in section of the world, which will maintain consistency across maps if I were to generate a bunch of zoomed-in sections, which I may do as my characters journey. You just pick a section to zoom-in on and it recreates it in a new file so the resolution remains excellent.

An example world is here: Guardians & Guides World Map with an accompanying zoom (Epmahia Zoom).

Now, I think I need to go back and make edits to that world (I think it needs a southern snowy continent... but, perhaps not. I suppose the Earth hasn't always had one), and I need to add some details to the Zoomed region. But these were generated from my first real play with the software, so no doubt I have a lot to learn.

Anyway, another one to add to your list...

Nice bro, nice!

Consider adding details like roads or countries with different color names from cities. Also, every map needs a kraken or a sea dragon! Nice!

If I remember, the road tool is available on premium. 😢

Still it would be a nice addition. Thanks for the suggestion!
I'll shove people off cliffs for a half-eaten Snickers. Does that count as having no morals?

...
I see
Nope. Perfectly normal.

Here's another set of maps (the finished products actually) I made using both Inkarnate (for generating the map itself) and Photoshop (for the 'old parchment' and related effects). I used this in my isekai novel, The Human Saint is Bored, particularly in Arc 2.

And here I was charting things out in photoshop with mspaint tier drawings.

You can always just pop the map into an editing software and mark out the roads yourself.
@Eclectic_Asininity Ah yeah, I was thinking of that. Actually, check out the maps I made using Inkarnate and Photoshop! (Just above this reply!)

There are more of this, honestly. Sadly, due to my unprecedented stupidity, I formatted the wrong disk...and erased two years' worth of illustrations and manuscripts with that.

Some of these remind me of those mats you would get with the little civil war army men to stage out battles.

But yeah I never felt the need to beautify my maps because its only going to be seen by me, these are neat though.

Ah, since I'm inspired by Tolkien and Lewis' works, I felt the need to add maps to further enhance the reader immersion in my novel. And I enjoyed creating these as well...brings out the nerd in me. XD

@georgelee5786 Told ya I'm freemium.
