The setting is similar to this one here. The only difference is that the female protagonist had a miscarriage. This drove her... a bit radical.

The male character tried to soothe her pain and depression. He wanted to end their promise (the one where she would give him a child in exchange for the saving ingredient). He believed sending her away from the place where she lost her child would be best so he wanted to break their agreement and got her back to her foster home.

She declined. Her words carried weight and she would ensure her part in it complete. She then asked to leave for a time.

When she returned a few years later, both of them knew the one responsible for her miscarriage.

At that time, the emperor was dead for several years. The power of the nation fell into the hands of the empress dowager and her clan. To solidify their power, the empress dowager believed it would be best if no other power within the country could pose any challenge to her son, the crown prince. Hence, she and her clan pulled the strings behind the scene to get the main sects of the martial world and the obscured sects into conflict.

After that war, most powers in the country still held relative strength in comparison to their prior stage. This led her to send assassins to destroy these influent forces.

The male character was the newly appointed master of his clan which is among the most powerful clans in the nation. Meanwhile, the protag was one of the growing power in the world. Her strength put her on par with the major sects and clans. When these two begun their contract, it painted them as prime target for the purge.

The empress dowager faction specifically decided to send their killers right at the most vulnerable period in the protag's life, her pregnancy. They failed to kill them but her child was gone.

Aimed with this knowledge, an alliance was made between the clans, sects and the loyal officials of the court. They wanted to remove the empress dowager faction. The protag joined this alliance and she was responsible for the death of the empress dowager and her clan.

The alliance wanted to spare the crown prince. He was just a twelve years old child. He didn't have any hand in the scheme and ambition of the empress dowager. The loyalists wanted to help the young prince rebuild the torn country.

However, the protag refused. She made it clear that she wanted the boy dead not for vengeance but because it was the most logical thing for her to do. Unlike the majority of the alliance, she was the executioner of almost every person with blood tie to the crown prince. She killed his mother, uncles, cousins, and countless others. If there was anyone who he would hate, that would be her. She had no reason to let a seed of threat to bloom. Even if he would pose no threat to her, there is no telling what would happen to her children and descendants after she dies. She was... not in her right mind. The miscarriage and self-isolation did more damage to her than good.

This resulted in a battle between the alliance and the protag. It concluded in a draw. All the experts in the alliance were exhausted but so was she.

She retreated for now but she would return.

The male character found out where she was recuperating and he wanted to convince her to end her bloodshed. He had always admired her. He did not want to see her becoming a demon like this.

He felt responsible because if he didn't propose that outrageous deal and simply handed the ingredient, she would not attempt to have a child. She would just be a qi cultivator and then a hermit, isolating herself from the world to pursue her goal of obtaining the world knowledge.

What should he say to her during their meeting to change her heart? Even getting her to agree to postpone her judgement to a later day would be a win because he could try to mend her mind. Slowly she might reconsider. The importance is what to say to her.

It doesn’t matter what he says to her. His decision is wrong. She’d be an idiot if she listened to him. He is setting her up to be hunted by the people she should have gotten rid of. She’s better off cutting her losses with that fool and moving on.
