Ralph Waldo Emerson is an American philosopher and poet who was responsible for the Transcendentialist movement, which believes int he inherent goodness of the individual, and human nature, encouraging "self-reliance", which believed that the greatest joy of life (heaven) was found in the ordinary day as opposed to existing with God. Transcendentialism was an ideology, and the thoughts of Emerson was a movement that heavily based its self upon German Romanticism, and was instrumental in the construction of the American perspective on life.
