Hmmm... some kinda." big bad " tends to be introduced quite late in survival stories... if at all

Often the surviving is enough...

I don't know about how engaging that is...

It runs dry after 30 chapters.

Because "just" surviving gets stale after a while. From this chick's experience with survival stories, the ones that they introduce "big bads" are the ones where the survivor is getting to the point where they could survive indefinitely without the addition of a challenge, and the author panics and resorts to the first thing they can imagine... Sort of a way to give a finale for the story, a run for the thrill.

Sometimes I feel like I am lost at sea, in every direction I look there are lighthouses just beyond the horizon, but they are all so far away.

But none of that matters in the end.
