There is this love/hate relationship with Kierra D'Attaina from Reborn From the Cosmos, because she is a very toxic influence on our protagonist and as much as she drives the plot froward and is one of the strong points of the story, she can cause a rollercoaster of emotions.
I learned to hate the mother from The one Player, because what she does is horrible even if you can understand where she's coming from. She's broken as a person.

Those two stories do things wonderfully. Cosmos has a hated villain but still brings so much in terms of intriguing ideas and overall qualities, you can't help but keep reading. And you dont regret it when you do.
The one Player is more strange in its execution, it's short so I recommend trying it.
