What game mechanic would you use to write a story around?

Hmm, but too many novels have it where the protag knows the ins and outs of the game.
Just look at Otome games, and others similar to it.

Wasn't there also a novel about a guy being transported into a really bugged game that no one but him plays and he knows everything about it?

That's a pretty OP mc.
I think you can balance it out. Like the MC not being able to do what he needs because he's not using a controller anymore. I mean I know where the two warp whistles are, I'm just really bad at the game so I still never beat it lol. He'd be used to one strat but can't do it so have to find another way using the knowledge he has. I'm not a good isekai writer so yea, probably isn't how you write a good one.

Personally, I think an interesting idea about be a protag who knows the game because he made it but suffered amnesia when he was transferred over. Hence, sometimes he remembers knowledge that other people don't.
How about instead the soul of the creator merged with a character but due to the transfer from one reality to another the soul was damaged and only certain information cams up when stimulated enough?

The amnesia thing is mildly done in Eliza, I think...
She remembers that she's the villain from the otome game, she remembers who the capture targets were, she remembers the heroine, but she can't remember much else.
Hmm, maybe not the same, now that I think about it...

In this case, don't make his growth go "skyrocket" in speed. Instead develop his skills, as he has the advantage if the system. Make "world energy" a reason for people to keep fighting. The stronger beasts they fight, the more one will grow; yet even then it would take centuries to overthrow the old order.

One may have the skill, but lack in strength. Yet if one has strength, but no skill, then they will be nothing but another pawn. Strength and ability, the difference is the amount of time required to grow those attributes.

Ah, I don't read usually read isekai so I see now. I'll think up a better idea If I can
It's still an interesting idea, but it might be starting to become a saturated idea.
I could be entirely wrong, though.

Isn't that similar to that upgrade specialist story?

Is it? I thought the mc only got the skill book and the memories and everything was basically useless to him?

Another game mechanic that I would love for a story to be based around would probably be Pokemon or Digimon style.

I don't know...
If there is, it sounds somewhat interesting.

I meant about the soul merging with another, but getting corrupted, thus forgetting stuff.

Assuming direct control.

It can go in two directions:
Isekai where protagonist is summoned in an overseer type of role where s/he guides a kingdom to prosperity.
VR world where the player has their own kingdom, but no real abilities of their own and can train any character for a role, then jump in to take control as needed.

The idea is that the MC can only take the role of a character, then has to work with those limitations. Success leads to stronger characters and more abilities, while failure means a crappy roster to work with.

Oh right is there any based on harvest moon? A calm farming game novel? Not bringing the farm to another world, I refuse to call that a farming novel

The Charm of Soul Pets.

Yeah, I've read it but I have a different idea on how to write a Pokemon style story. I do however love Charm of Soul Pets cause it is very close to how I imagine a novel similar to Pokemon.
