It has been five years since The Demon Lord declared war against all the humanity.

At the brink of its own destruction, the kingdom decided to call upon heroes from another world to face the Demon Lord’s powerful army.

You are a hero who has arrived to face the Demon Lord and try to save the world. The battle has been a close one, but you and your comrades emerged victorious.

However, the Throne of Chaos must have an owner. Whoever landed the last blow against the Demon Lord shall take his place.

The problem is that no one knows who that one is.

In order to prevent the rise of a new Demon Lord, you must find and kill that person!

This is a closed setup, where player alignment and role will be revealed upon death. There is not a list of roles that may or may not be included. This will be a low to medium complexity game. If you’re interested in playing, spectating, or subbing, either comment /join, /spec, or /sub.

The minimum requirement for the game to start is 7 players.

Mafia is a party game devised by Dmitry Davidoff in 1986. In its most basic, original form, Mafia pits two groups of people against each other: The “Town”, and the “Mafia”. The Town is the uninformed majority; they do not know who anyone is but themselves.

The Mafia is the informed minority; the Mafia knows who the other members of the Mafia are, and, by elimination, who the Town is. Each group has its own goal that it must reach to win the game. The Town must eliminate all the Mafia to make themselves safe, and the Mafia must become a majority of the player base. So, how do they do this?

Mafia is divided into two phases, a Day Phase, and a Night phase. During the Day phase, every player gets to vote for someone who they think is the Mafia. At the end of the day phase, the person with the most votes is ‘lynched’, their role revealed, and the game switches to the Night phase.

During the Night phase, the Mafia can target a single player and kill them. Once the next Day phase starts, their role is revealed, and so the game continues on until someone wins. The town is not forced to simply vote randomly, however.

Mafia is a game of discussion and debate, and every day should be filled with arguments flying about as to who is the Mafia in the town’s midst. The Town must deduce, and the Mafia must deceive, for either to achieve victory.

So end the rules for basic Mafia. In practice, though, games of Mafia (especially those held online) have a variety of gimmicks: third parties, people with Night powers on each side, modifications of the base rules to establish a certain theme.

As such, the description above is only generally applicable and may be modified at the Host's discretion. A good Host will tell you if there are any drastic changes to the base rules, though additions and modifications may remain hidden.

Mafia is a relatively simple game to play in the mechanical sense: during the Day Phase, one indicates who they want to vote for, usually using the phrase “Lynch Example Player”, or something similar.

During the Night phase, those who have Night actions send the host a Private Message indicating who their target is or how they will otherwise use their ability. Day Phases tend to last longer than Night Phases, on the whole. This is to give people more time to talk.

Usually, lynches are decided by one of two methods: Plurality and Majority. A plurality lynch kills the person who has the most votes at the end of the day. Even if someone has only a single vote, if no one else does, that person is lynched.

Majority kills only if a majority of the players have voted for that person. Majority lynch games often have a mechanic known as a “Hammer”, where the day instantly ends the moment someone receives the Majority vote. This serves to speed up the game but can make people feel like they’ve been cut off from the discussion.

The following are some general rules used in most online Mafia games here on SH. Keep in mind that they may be changed between games and that you should always make sure to read the Host's version of the rules.

  1. All Roles will be randomly assigned to players, to prevent favouritism.
  2. The game is separated into Day and Night phases. Day phases end after 48 hours, Night phases end after 24 hours.
  3. Always post at least once per Day phase. Inactive players will be prodded and replaced.
  4. Players must stop posting within the game thread after they die. Dead players cannot discuss the game with living players.
  5. Do not discuss the game with other players outside of the game thread unless explicitly allowed by your role.
  6. Do not directly quote information directly from your PM.
  7. When voting for another player, make certain that your vote stands out from the rest of your post. This is often done by mentioning the Host, then making the text larger and/or coloured differently.
  8. Always be trying to win. Don’t give up. In general, don’t act against the spirit of the game.
  9. Always behave courteously and with respect towards your fellow players, the host, yourself, and any other persons.
  10. If you believe a player is violating one of these rules by letter, or in spirit, contact me in your PM.
  11. Good luck, and have fun! This is not optional.
