The all-out hell. Endless war spanning galaxies and species. So much room for acts of courage and honor, and debauchery and evil. Nigh endless room for more lore! Oh, and space marines.

Seriously though, I'm not aware what the 40k is for...my encounter with Warhammer is in the TotalWar Games.

I think the total wars games are not 40k? I might be wrong, but its the old fantasy not future scifi version of the same universe?
