Yeah, you start by creating your own spacefaring civilization. Species, origin, government structure, ethics.

The actual games start at the year 2200, when most civs have begun to explore the galaxy. You grow your territory and war with aliens. You can subjugate, destroy, or form alliances. Improve techs, discover mysteries. Eventuallly there is an endgame crisis which threatens the galaxy.

Lot of people use it to play with their favorite scifi civs. Including 40k. Mods help even more.
