Shitty isekai have a monopoly over Japanese culture for already some time.
The quality doesn't matter when it comes to them, only the substance, the male fantasy.
Of course higher quality ones tend to be more popular but most of the popular ones just did something the first time in this genre.
Would slime tensei be as popular if it wasn't one of the first (and had a mediocre quality at best, Is it only me or is that protagonist even worse than the bland ones because the personality makes no sense).
Would SAO be so popular if it wasn't the first? It's horrible (except the abridged version).
Would Overlord be so popular if it wasn't the first to use these tropes?

It's true for most trends.

Another example would be Naruto, it's writing especially it's world building is horrible, I have seen literal smut have more consistency in world building or at least I feel like it, probably true though.
It's character are too somewhat inconsistent. But the substance it has -at least in the 3 first seasons I watched- was good, the tragic child soldier part hit really hard.

Or look at scribblehub. Sometimes I read the smut series out of curiosity.
The truth I see makes me fucking cry.
I have seen horrible writing, oh god I have seen horrible writing I can't stop crying.
But they got substance people want to see, some have at least 'interesting' world building.

People seek most of the times only tropes, most would be overjoyed to read more about their favourite tropes.
How many times do people read something for the writing quality?
If you seek long enough you could find probably in most things problems too.

At last a personal example, Genocide online, it only concentrates on what is the story is about people and relationships.
Of course it hasn't the worst quality when it comes to writing, but the world literally bends itself for the people within to enhance the situations.
Or it's just me being far too emotional but isn't that the point?

You're not alone, I tried reading the slime Tensei web novel, didn't like it. Could've been because of the poor translation quality, but I also just didn't like rimuru.
