"I knew I had to memorize it the very moment I heard it, so I made the effort to attend as a second-year and made sure to jot all the words down. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made --- I sometimes have trouble falling asleep due to my low blood pressure, and just reading that speech causes me to doze off immediately."

Swir paused upon noticing that the sleeping person had woken up.

"And I'm Swir, a third-year of this school. It's a pleasure."

"That sounds suspiciously like what my big sis told me. Repeating the same thing over and over again is a symptom of insanity. Why is the headmaster still around?"

Probably through the power of capitalism, the darkest of dark arts. There are plenty of rumours surrounding the current headmaster. What if one of them is true? Liz doesn't know if she can keep believing in the words of an elder sister whose body consisted of 99% water and 1% food coloring, but whatever.

Something great but terrible is happening in the school and Liz doesn't want to get entangled in the mess. She only wanted to have a normal formal education for once, thanks.

"Huh, so, those were teachers."

They won't expel for skipping? Is that a good or bad news? So far, Eudes did not know whether he wanted to stay or not. All he knew was that if he didn't go, his two sisters would likely annoy him. Something he would very much like to avoid.

"... To remember all these sentences, you must have heard it more than just a few times."
So throughout the year, the headmaster repeats this speech? Or something similar at least.

"Not yet, lemme solve that."
He cleared his throat and continued to speak.
"My name is Eudes Quesnel. Now, you know me."

"I see. You already know my name. Do I still need to introduce myself? Names have power, you know."

POV Aurora

Aurora was about to enter her fluffy dreamworld and enjoy a peaceful slumber, but reality decided otherwise. She had already appropriated, someday might say even stolen, a curtain, now turned into a blanket. She was just missing a soft pillow, but her options were limited in that regard. She found nothing and nobody she could use as a pillow.

But everything came otherwise. Her senses sharpened. The feeling of a stare penetrated her back. Someone observed her. She didn't like that. She never liked it.

Aurora turned her head in a quick and abrupt motion. Her dark purple eyes aimed at her mysterious observer.

Her stare fell on a boy. Aurora narrowed her eyes.

As Ciel was about to walk away, a chill went down his spine. After mentally sighing, he turned and looked at the source of his discomfort. The girl who decided that a corner of a building was a good place to sleep. She was staring at him, 'Ok, let's get this over with.'

"Hello," Ciel said with a polite tone and look. The one that he was forced to learn to avoid any trouble that might come from angering Nobels. "Is something bothering you?" Ciel continued glad that his MIstress allowed him some free time right now.

"No, I'm pretty sure he's doing that because it'll save him the trouble of writing out a new speech...well, that aside, I don't believe I've caught your name yet. You are?"

Taking a seat at the edge of the occupied bed, Swir stared curiously.

Aurora regarded the boy with interest, surprised that he approached her. Normally, people told her she was creepy and strange. And that she sent cold shivers down their spine, which were probably the reasons she had difficulties finding friends.

But now the boy was here and Aurora panicked. She wasn't prepared for this kind of situations. Someone actually talked to her. What should she do?

Aurora countered with a polite smile sweeter than sugar, "Hello, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. My name is Aurora von Schwarz while yours is sadly unknown to me. You don't seem to be from a noble family, otherwise I would remember you face. But to be fair, my memory is not the best and I might err."

"But to answer your question, yes, something is bothering me."

"Why did you stare at me?" Aurora pouted because pouting is always good.

"Bah! A name is just a name, you can change it if you wish!"
After exclaiming his thoughts, Eudes then frowned at her words. She didn't say her name, did she? He shrugged over it and just waited for a reply. In any case, he needed to finish that bread before continuing on this conversation.
"No, I'm pretty sure he's doing that because it'll save him the trouble of writing out a new speech...well, that aside, I don't believe I've caught your name yet. You are?"

While Eudes wanted to speak about the difficulty of writing speeches, he restrained himself as in the first place, he never had an opportunity to write one. At least in this life. Nonetheless, he was also curious about her name but he continued to munch on his piece of bread, soon finished by now.

'Ok, I got this.' Ciel thought hoping not to mess this up upon realizing that this girl might be a Nobel, and what he did could be considered rude to some.

"Hello, Madam. Sorry for my rude behaviour, my name is Ciel State. And to answer your question. I was just curious why anyone would choose a corner of a building as a resting spot. As you were the second person today, who I saw doing this. And I wasn't sure how comfortable it could be. Sorry if my curiosity bothered you, I will try my best not to make the same mistake in the future." Ciel said keeping is polite tone the whole time.

"I hope you could accept my apology," Ciel said as he bowed in apology.

Aurora mused, tilting head as usual. "State ... State ... State ... Your name doesn't seem familiar, but that is far from surprising. I assume you are commoner then. And judging by your appearance, a fresh year. The academy allows them to enter since quite a while. How times change, don't they?"

Aurora smiled. "And not offence intended Ciel, I am just not used to being stared at. This kind of behaviour is unusual in my circles. I hope you understand."

Aurora got an idea. "Maybe you might be interested in offering me some company for the time being?"

"We could even become friends, whatever that is supposed to mean. Apparently, this strange thing called "friends" is important here at the academy." Aurora clasped her hands and waited for a response.

"Ah, where are my manners? I am Veronika Taylore, the Student Council President, pleased to meet you Angelica." I smiled warmly at her before wondering why the two students weren't moving.
"...You aren't by any chance...lost, are you?" I gave a worried expression.

@TRNRLogan

X
The heroine shook her head, "nope!"
She wondered who Angelica had brought over to her side, “Oh, hi there! I’m Lisette. Are you alright? I have an extra sweater if you’re cold?” Lisette pulled out her extra cream sweater that she had in case it got too cold in class.

@AliceShiki
The heroine was happy they were getting along so quickly
I blushed internally while maintaining a calm facade, "Ah, no need to call me Lady, Johan. After all, I am not a noble." I smiled in embarrassment at the misunderstanding before regaining myself.
"Although I appreciate your offer to escort, I need to do a final patrol to ensure everyone is in the Auditorium. Please, why not escort miss Angelica? She, after all, is of nobility." I motioned towards Angelica before handing out a map of the school the teachers had provided for the first day of the term. "Here's a map, in case you get lost. We're currently here." I pointed at a corridor two turns away from the Auditorium, "Here's the Auditorium main entrance."
I checked my watch and saw there was about two minutes left. Smiling at the two new students, I said: "Sorry, I need to be going. Ah, before I forget! Please refrain from pulling out your sword inside, Mr Wulff. We don't want any accidents."
I then left to continue my last patrol.

@Leegood

"What a shame. I will certainly avoid using my sword whenever possible Lady Taylore. Well then goodbye Lady Taylore i hope you have a wonderful day."

What a nice lady. Hopefully I stay on her good side. After all she is the student council president.

* I turn to Lady Angelica *

"My apologies Lady Angelica. I don't believe we were properly introduced. The name is Johan Wulff. Shall i escort you to the ceremony?"
@Leegood

*Lady Taylore rushes back here out of breath*

"Ah, thank goodness you're still here. If I may be so bold to ask, would you help carry an unconscious student to the infirmary? I will explain to the teachers for your tardiness, I promise."

WHAT!?! A student collapsed!

"Of course i shall help bring them to the infirmary Lady Taylore."

*I turn to Lady Angelica*

"My deepest apologies Lady Angelica it seems I shall be unable to escort you to the ceremony. I shall make it up to you in the future."

"Well then Lady Taylore what are we waiting for? Let us hurry that student to the infirmary."

"Be well~" the heroine waved
I thought about the figure I saw earlier and wondered if they were the culprit. Putting such thoughts at the back of my mind to tell the teachers of this, I shook my head and gave a reassuring smile.
"I'm sure the Nurse will be able to figure out what's happened to this girl. In the mean time, all we can do is pray to the Goddess that she keeps this place safe from further dangers."

Not noticing the glances, I thought about the different classes available and wondered if Johan's siblings would be into using swords as much as he seemed to be. Thinking along those lines, I recalled an exceptional teacher the principal personally hired, as well as other teachers for the other subjects.
"Hmm, we have the expected classes in Magic Theory, Practical Magic, Politics for the nobles, Governing and Economics for the nobles - though commoners can also take part in the Economics parts. As for other, less well-known, subjects, we have Magic Warrior classes, as well as Physical Education. Ah, both of those are taught by Mr Reavis who is an exceptionally skilled fighter who specialises in going against magic users."

After listing several subjects, we reached the Infirmary, to which I knocked on the door before hearing the Nurse inside say to come in.

"Nurse, we found this student unconscious in the corridor with this in her arm." I handed the syringe to her, "I didn't think it wise to leave her there and so requested support from Mr Wulff to aid in carrying her here. Would it be okay to ask for a note for him explaining his absence from the Opening Ceremony?"

I saw the Nurse nod before taking the syringe, writing a note, then handing it over and checking on the patient.

"Many thanks, Nurse. Pardon my rudeness, however we need to attend the Opening Ceremony."

I watched as the Nurse simply waved her hand to show it was fine for us to leave, which brought relief to me.

"Come on, Johan. Just this once, I will ignore breaking the rule of running to get to the Auditorium." I smiled at him before running ahead. As I ran, I suddenly remembered that Angelica had a gift for healing and felt stupid for not asking her to have a go at helping...

"Ah, Liz, short for Elizabeth. It is a pretty name, yeah."

While the 'I guess' part gave her some pause, Swir only raised an eyebrow.

"How did you end up in the infirmary? First-years usually don't know the way here, so it's probably a second or third-year who brought you here. Are you feeling alright?"

'Ok, this could have gone worse. I do need some connections for me and my mistress if I intend to do this long term. And I do have time left, my Mistress did say that she doesn't need me for the rest of the day. So I guess I really don't have a reason to refuse, also I really don't think offending a Nobel on the first day of school is a smart idea.' Ciel thought, trying to convince himself that this is a good idea.

'It could be worse, Aurora seems kind enough to interact with. And she is right friends are important at the academy.'

"I will gladly be your friends, I myself don't have any. So it would be nice to be your friend if you are fine with me." Ciel answered with a kind smile, "I' will also gladly keep you company. Where do you have in mind? I'm not that familiar with the school yet."

"Excellent, then we are official friends now." Aurora took Ciel's hand and gripped it tightly.

"When it comes to school ... ... ..." Aurora hesitated. "Well, I am as clueless as you. This is my first year."

She laughed nervously. "Don't worry. I don't feels like I'm going to die any sooner. Well, who knows? The last time my elder sister attended this school, a freshman collapsed on their first day and never rises up again because I quote: 'their free trial of being alive has expired.' It can happen to anyone. Any time."

"Oughta have paid for the subscription fees before the trial ended then, I reckon. But that's fine."

Finishing off the last of her bread, Swir got up and went over to an unoccupied bed, lying down with practiced ease. She covered her mouth as she yawned.

"Uuuuu...there it is. It's been a good talk, but I'm...getting sleepy again, so...goodnight. If the nurse asks, it's the usual..."

Having declared thus, Swir quickly returned to dreamland.

'YES!!!! THIS IS MY CHANCE!!!' While mentally celebrating, Ciel kept a calm look on the outside.

"May, I suggest asking some of the older students for directions? I think a good place to start off with is the library. I think the library will be an important place for us to know where it is. We never know when we might need some information for classes, and if you ever find yourself with nothing to do. The library is a great quiet place to find a good book to read to entertain yourself. And if you ever find yourself tired, the library is a good quiet place to rest."

"So how about it?"

Aurora sparkled and bounced. "That sounds like a wonderful idea. I love books. Well, not all of them, but I love books about magic because I love magic. I always wanted to be a great sorceress and make my family proud. The Schwarz are a long line of proud fire magic users after all."

"If you want you can even train together with me and my fire. I always need someone to serve as target for practice."

Aurora created a burning purple flame in her palm and proudly showed Ciel the product of years of her hard work. "Isn't it cute? My fire is so lovingly passionate."

Aurora patted her flame. "Fire, say hello to Ciel. He will be our friend from now on." Her fire flickered slightly. Its colour shifted briefly as if it was trying to communicate.

As leanord stretches "Missing students... Sure i got that... got any notes about who is missing?"
@Nahrenne
"Of course, Mr Reavis!"
I motioned to my Vice President who handed me several other clipboards from the other Student Council members. I then tucked a lock of hair behind my ear before listing the names of missing students:

"We have Deer R. Axe, (@Derrax) a First Year whose father is a commander in Fiarolos' army, along with a mother who is a powerful witch; Soo Villainess, (@Yorda) who also a First Year and is here via loans; Dauren Carom, (@Quaesitor) a First Year who seems to have quite a slender build; Nirvano Enzo, (@Darklain0725) who is a First Year, he'll be very noticeable since his dossier says he has short spiky red hair with red eyes and is quite well-toned from training a lot, his mother is apparently the Guild Master of the Adventurer's Guild; Klaus Winter, (@Haitaka) who is a First Year that came a year late, his parents seem to work in government jobs; Lady Aurora von Schwarz, (@Assurbanipal_II) a First Year noble, I assume her family needs no introduction; Ciel State, (@TheOneWho) a First Year who has been described as having a relatively poor appearance with a thin body...seriously who wrote these dossiers...? Ah, ahem; Eudes Quesnel, (@Gaap) a First Year who...hmm, it describes him as a bit of a thug...just...what? Ah, we also have Swir P. Nacht, (@Bochi) a Third Year who often skips out on things due to her low blood pressure, I'm sure you already know about her; Moe Akina, (@BB_Tensei) a First Year who, huh? There's no description of what she looks like...; ah, and finally Alba Stahlburg, (@FenrIIrz) a First Year who has white hair and comes from a hunting caravan, apparently."

I stared at the teacher, Mr Reavis for a few seconds before wryly smiling, "I'm sorry about the long list. It seems this year we'll be facing a lot of naughty students. My apologies."

Yea, a fellow book lover can't be all bad. And burns isn't something I'm not used to by now. Yes, this will make enduring my parent's punishments worth it!'

Aurora grabbed Ciel's hand and rushed off despite having not even the modicum of an idea where the library was. "To the library! To the magic section! To the fundamentals exothermic and endothermic magical reactions of advanced fire magic under consideration of the first law of thermodynamics!"

Soo Villainous Makes Her Debut

The School Opening Ceremony had come to an end and one girl in particular was overjoyed that she no longer had to listen to the drivel.

"This school was built on the foundations of linking the nobles with the commoners, as well as ensuring the prosperity of future generations of our nation. As the Goddess is the Light, the Abyss Demon is the Dark, so must we strive to maintain a balance of harmony between each other. This is a place of learning; a place of growing! It is also a place to foster friendship." I gave a warm smile to as many of the students as possible.

"Do not feel that there is a barrier that must be maintained purely because of your social class. As commoners need nobles to ensure safety and order, the nobles need commoners to ensure prosperity and power. Without one, the other will not function properly." I could feel my legs beginning to shake behind the lectern but didn't let it show.

Soo Villainous recalled part of the speech given by Student Council President Veronika Taylore. She was thoroughly disgusted from the ideology of this other world. Hierarchal structures, caste systems, and class discrimination were a huge cause for concern in any world. It all resulted in abuse of power in the end.

"'Linking the nobles with the commoners'? Don't make me sick." Soo didn't believe in such nonsense. Even if the school took precautions to treat commoners and nobles equally it's impossible in practice. She knew the truth. After 3 years Soo would graduate and return to the real world where every slight she injured a noble's pride with would be returned a hundred-fold. That's right, power and authority made the world spin, and some silly academy wasn't going to change it.

Going even further, Taylore had basically relegated commoners to the position of revenue generators for the nobility. That isn't a mutually beneficial relationship; it's a racket.

"Hmpf. Veronika Taylore the Student Council President, there is no doubt that she was placed in that position because she is a commoner who knows her place and bootlicks the aristocracy. It's like listening to pro-noble propaganda. Her sophistry legitimizes the rulership and power abuse of the aristocracy."

Now that the speeches had come to an end everyone was free to roam as they pleased for orientation. It was the ideal time to familiarize oneself with the academy's layout and facilities.

Soo saw various people mingling, but she wasn't so lucky. After all, Soo didn't know anyone here. It had taken all her effort and guile to even make it to the prestigious academy. Poverty had really done a number on her, and she will never forget the struggles she encountered as a mixed blood.

"Damn humans ... even though I'm part human too."

She was truly starting from zero.

Despite the trials she had to go through, Soo truly believed that this day was her beginning. She came to the academy brimming with resolve and in the spirit of determination she had promised to spend her first day meaningfully, but ...

*stomach growling*

Somehow Soo found herself foraging in the bushes from habit. Poverty sure is a pain.
