But now I do. Because if one tries to write a Hetalia fic in the real world, someone will get pissed. But if you get the characters out of the real world, and catapult them into McFantasy land, or even the Earth of Vampire: The Masquerade, then you get some drama, but no one ends up being pissed off.

I am one step away from generic Isekai with a system. And you know what? It is fun writing isekai.

Yes, I have joined the dark side.

Eh, it's fine. Portal fantasy didn't use to be trash in the 20th century. Isekai is only bad because the overwhelming majority of authors don't put any effort into making compelling stories, characters, and worlds.

Is Alice in Wonderland bad? Nah. And it's 100% isekai/portal fantasy. Same for the tv show Sliders; that one's plot was basically "isekai of the week" but its clever writing and good actor chemistry made it memorable and fun.

Tropes are tools. The rest is, as cool kids say these days, "skill issue".

Have fun on your writing project!

That's a nice way to think about it. I'll be honest a lot of my stories started out as pretentious or at least written out of spite, but then I fell in love with the concept, characters, and plot. So then I started writing it sincerely because it's fun!

It's the most fun when you have the most idiotic concept but then pour your heart into it. I did that for my story about a guy Isekai to a world that runs on smut/porn logic, but uses the LitRPG powers he's given to live a normal life. It's hard with the mob and an evil dickhead angel giving him trouble, but he mostly manages (before he says fuck it and goes to war with them)

As long as you don't start writing korean-style urban fantasy novels, I think you're fine.
Seriously, as weirdly tempting as it is to make one- even if only as a parody- please, do NOT do it.
I can tell that the views you would get would override any sense of irony, and you'd be stuck in that hellhole.

And maybe don't fall into the trap of "I reincarnated as [INSERT STRANGE ENTITY HERE]!?"
Like, as hilarious the thought process of the guy who wrote that one LN where the MC becomes a sapient vending machine might be, it doesn't mean that the story was all that good.

...sorry, I went off on a tangent. Again.

Real world, or not, there's always that someone who'll get pissed at isekai, no matter what the writing quality is.

Although i majorly write isekai too i have a few books in the real world and i happily shit on any country and do whatever i want. In one of my novels USA got invaded by magic knights and became a kingdom, russia got burned by dragons and became so poor its worse than a third world country now, south american countries unified below an aztec necromancer leadership, and so on...

Dont worry

Like a chinese novel (with time travel to 19XX), MC once mentioned to writer FL : "Writing like that is like a shortcut and equivalent 'evil cultivation'. Only a few do it now but soon it will be the mainstream method."

Modern saying : In a world of blind people, being able to see, is a sin.

I think isekai are fine, I just don't want to write one. You should have fun writing. I strongly considered writing a smut story. Hilarously, one of my children of Adam and Eve versions had the women in the family as prostitutes because Adam cursed them by calling them "a pack of whores" and it sticks. I liked the way the story worked I'm just not sure I want to write smut. It's the whole problem that you must provide sex scenes once you start. Sex scenes can get repetative.
